alzheimer’s disease touches millions of lives – it’s a growing epidemic

working together toward a world without alzheimer’s

who is affected• More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease.

• More than 15 million Americans care for an individual with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

• Women, African Americans and Hispanics are most likely to be affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias.

alzheimer’s in the workplace• 64% of caregivers are currently employed.

• 54% of employed caregivers reported having to work late, leave early or take time off due to caregiver demands.

the cost of alzheimer’s• In 2014, Alzheimer’s and other dementias are projected to cost the

nation $214 billion.

• Many families drain their savings to provide care.

the numbers are increasing• As many as 16 million people will be living with Alzheimer’s disease

by 2050 — triple the number today.

• The costs of Alzheimer’s in 2050 are estimated to total $1.2 trillion (in today’s dollars).

Currently, there is no way to prevent, cure or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s — a disease that each year kills more Americans than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

Scientists believe we are now at the tipping point. We have the ideas, the technology and the will. Now we need the support.

As the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research, the Alzheimer’s Association is mobilizing public support while investing in research that will help us realize our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s.

“We are so grateful to our dedicated sponsors and other partners for sharing our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s — and for financially investing in Alzheimer’s care, support and research efforts. Working together, our shared vision will become reality.”

Greg Roderick CEO, Frontier Management

Memories in the Making® resulted from the exploration of the use of art as an alternative form of expression for people with dementia. While Alzheimer’s disease brings constant reminders of failures

and losses, Memories in the Making provides a nonjudgmental environment in which participants can express their feelings. The focus is on the process rather than the product, allowing people with dementia to experience moments of joy and a renewed sense of accomplishment and self-respect.

Walk to End Alzheimer’sSeptember 13, 2015

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s® provides an opportunity for the Alzheimer’s community — family and professional caregivers, those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, people who have lost a loved one to Alzheimer’s and those who know Alzheimer’s could impact them at any time during their lives — to come together with one voice and say that now is the time to fight back.

The Walk offers the community a chance to see the courage and beauty of people who are fighting a disease that will ultimately win. It offers hope that in the near future, this disease will not be victorious — it will be treatable and, eventually, curable. Most important, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s® brings people who are in the midst of an incredibly isolating disease the chance to see they are not alone.

Our 2015 Walks will be held in Albany, Bend, Eugene, Medford, Portland and Roseburg.W

17th-Annual McGinty Conference on Alzheimer’s

The McGinty Memorial Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease honors Dean McGinty, M.D., a Portland geriatrician, early advocate for the needs of persons with dementia, and a pioneer in the Alzheimer’s family

support movement. Since Dr. McGinty’s unexpected death in 1995, the Alzheimer’s Association Oregon Chapter has honored Dr. McGinty with an educational conference dedicated to the principles he practiced

throughout his career: providing high-quality, compassionate and family-centered care. The interactive sessions, motivating speakers, and innovative ideas will focus on the many facets of Alzheimer’s disease,

caregiving, research, communication, life-enhancing activities and person-centered care.

Working Together Toward a World Without Alzheimer’s

Unless we take action now, the rising death rates from Alzheimer’s will continue unabated into the future. Currently, there is no way to prevent, cure or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s — a disease that each year kills more Americans than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

Scientists believe we are at a tipping point. We have the ideas, the technology and the will — now we need the support.

As the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research, the Alzheimer’s Association is mobilizing public support while investing in research that will help us realize our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s. To most effectively reach those affected by Alzheimer’s, we:

• Work with our corporate partners to educate, empower and support employees who are also caregivers.

• Provide companies with accessible information and tools to actively engage their employees in the fight, including volunteer opportunities.

• Offer opportunities to raise funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
