Biography

I am an architect with 9 years experience in Cairo, Egypt, I worked on different projects scales from luxurious flats to large scale projects, with several typologies; housing, public buildings,

healthcare, hospitality, educational and worship buildings. These projects were in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. I have worked with different nationalities in local and global firms, on of them was Dar Al-Handasah which allowed me to work with Perkins & Will (USA) in several projects between

2007 & 2010 on projects that were certified by LEED along with other projects with different experiences.

After graduation in 2005 I started working as a junior architect in a local consultancy in Cairo, then I moved in 2006 to a bigger local design studio where I worked on bigger projects with bigger

teams.

From the year 2007 I moved to “Dar Al Handasah (dar group)” and I worked there for three years, in those years I gained global experience, working with more than 300 architects, MEP engineers, structural engineers, landscape architects interior designers and project managers from different nationalities, I gained experiences in conceptual design, design development and coordination of large scale projects. Involvement in large teams working on large scale projects was a new

challenge that helped in taking responsibilities and solving problems. After those years I moved to a smaller firm with higher responsibilities and challenges.

Starting from 2010, my experience in “Living In developments” for a year and a half allowed me to work on high end residential projects, as a team leader managing 6 projects with a group of

architects and coordinating the project with engineers and clients.

After the instabilities in Egypt in 2011, developments started to decrease as economy started to slow, so I moved to a smaller consultancy which needed my collaboration to promote their studio, that allowed me to work on residential projects in the local market with clients and the

municipality.

My late experience in the academic practice in the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, after gaining a master’s degree in sustainable environmental design; has added to my experience the environmental aspect that is essential in the design process, with the

principles, philosophy and the latest software and tools in sustainable environmental design, using parametric tools, CFD and thermodynamics software to reach a zero cooling/heating loads buildings, and reaching indoor thermal comfort with the use of renewable energy and sustainable adaptive methods, all of which will affect the life and cost of a building and inhabitants comfort level, this also extends to the urban micro-climate which is essential for indoors, transitional

spaces and outdoor comfort.

Overall my experience has helped in forming a full vision as an architect that can design, develop, follow up with MEP engineers and clients and managing teams in small and large scale projects

with respect to the environmental aspects for energy efficiency projects.

MSc in Sustainable Environmental Design

In this program, several lessons have been learned, as sustainable environmental design is not just a matter of renewable features or materials, but it has to begin with the very beginning of any project, starting from the urban context, then going through the transitional areas, the building envelope and the internal spaces. Each parameter has secondary parameters which can formulate an integrated solution that can provide a sustainable building.

As climate is unstable and changing, buildings should be adaptive and climate responsive.

Research, fieldwork and analytic work should be carried out to understand every climate, location and inhabitants to be able to provide them with comfort indoor and outdoor spaces.

The challenge is how to harmonize all different parameters without compromising any of them and reaching a final integrated design.

Urban micro-climate analysis & evaluation of “More London’ plaza and passage (2014)Design by Foster & Partners

In term 1, the purpose of the research in term 1 was to understand the fundamentals in environmental research and analysis, in this project I worked on how to study outdoors and how people interact with them, More London passage and plaza were the main area of study, thermodynamics and CFD simulations were carried out to calibrate with the measurements and recordings that were observed on site, then to solve existing problems.

Design of a mixed use social housing in the Royal Docks, London (2015)

The purpose of term 2 was to apply what was learned in term 1 on a design project, the project is located in London Royal Docks, the group chose the project (The Royal Wharf) to design a new mixed use social housing for young professionals.

In this project the group’s objective was to reach a climate responsive free running housing project.

Urban form was designed using parametric & CFD tools, and indoor daylighting and thermal comfort was achieved using daylighting and thermodynamics simulations, after applying principles and theories from term 1.

PALM JEBEL ALI, DUBAI, UAESPINE MIXED USE TOWERS (2007)DAR AL HANDASAH

In this project the objective was to design a proposal for a mixed use towers in PJA, the project consists of 2 podiums located in PJA’s spine, the 2 podiums carry 6 towers. The client needed a modern look for the project with glass facades.

The proposal was to create a graded skyline, then by creating a human scale at podium’s level, with a maximum exposure to the gulf view.

16

Page 17: Aly A. Mahmoud

MY ROLE

To translate and interpret the developer’s requirements from the (TOR) report into meaningful design approach with architectural principles and spacial meanings. Then to design the architectural plans for the towers in reference to that.
