Dear Friends, PJI, in partnership with colleagues across the college and partners throughout the community, is proud to present Conversation on Justice 2019. Throughout the last number of years, this weekly conference has blossomed into a deeply engaging time of thoughtful inquiry and challenging questions about the issues that most impact human flourishing. Always with the goal of growing the Culture of Peace, we recognize the imperative of justice for all people. As we aspire to equity, human rights, and peace within, between and among us, we offer this week of education to our students and community so as to move one step closer to the world we wish to live in. Thank you to Student Development for providing financial support, to the PJI Academic and Campus Coordinators, Michele, Nicole, Aida, Elizabeth, Paul and Jennifer for their dedication to this work, to the faculty, staff and community members facilitating the workshops, and the PJI office staff for bringing it all together. This workshop explores red flags and myths about dating/domestic violence and provides tips on how to become an active bystander to support friends and family who may need help.

The Surreal Search for a Personal Casa Azul: Frida Kahlo’s Embodied Activism and Feminism Facilitated by Crystal Smith and Elizabeth Faulcon This workshop will aim to discuss Frida Kahlo’s artwork through the lens of intersectional feminism, investigating Kahlo who fiercely defined and embodied disabled, indigenous feminism, and in the process, lived a life of defiant self-definition articulated through self-portraits that are as beautiful as they are provocative.

Peaceful Activism: How to Practice Nonviolent Civil Disobedience and Self-Care Facilitated by Krystal Pherai and Micheline Maalouf This workshop will teach participants how to become peaceful activists, working toward mending social justice issues while practicing true nonviolence. Self-care tips, like mindfulness, will also be taught, giving participants a toolkit on how to care for themselves while caring for others.

Voting Rights: Local, State and National Perspectives Facilitated by: Terri Susan Fine The session will focus on historical and contemporary voting rights issues focusing on race, ethnicity and voting rights. Participants will complete a state-level voting rights test from the 1960s. The session will include an overview of contemporary voting rights issues including felons' rights, gerrymandering and voters' access to the polls.

The True Costs of Fast Fashion Facilitated by Resham Shirsat With the rise of fast fashion over the last two decades, the clothing industry has become on the most polluting industries in the world. Clothing production leaves people and the planet behind to feed consumer demand for cheap and disposable clothing. Most people are unaware of where their clothes were made, by whom, and under what conditions. There are also ethical health and safety concerns over farmworkers’ and garment workers’ rights and the large scale destruction of significant ecosystems needed to sustain human health and survival. Participants will learn some of the ways to create a more sustainable clothing industry.

Anti-Semitism in America Facilitated by Aby Boumarate and Nicole Valentino With the rising epidemic of anti-Semitism in America, it is no surprise that bomb threats, vandalism, and anti-Semitic social-media postings have now escalated to physical harm in the form of assaults and mass shootings. In fact, several months before the recent massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, the Anti-Defamation League recorded a 57 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the United States in 2017.

Pink and Blue: The Visible and Invisible Violence of Gender Roles Facilitated by Nadia Garzon This workshop will use theater games and other artistic languages to explore the visible and invisible violence generated by gender roles and by ideas about masculinity and femininity. The workshop will also offer an opportunity for reflection and dialogue as participants explore personal and global experiences, while connecting with others and while imagining a “nonviolent gender” approach. The workshop is for all genders.

Climate Change: Why and What We Can Do Facilitated by Desta Horner and Dr. Richard Wood, Chapter Leader Citizens' Climate Lobby Climate change will shortly have a serious impact on our community. We will discuss actions to protect our citizens with special attention to low-income families. And develop a list of the most effective actions to reduce fossil fuel emissions which pollute the atmosphere and create global warming.
