FCC’s first grape harvest “bottled” intime for Christmas

With gardening tools and buckets in hand, sever-al dozen residents gathered to have a close encounterwith 600 grapevines growing in Fulshear CreekCrossing’s unique vineyard on the south shoreof Huggins Lake. Being a part of the first officialharvest of Blanc du Bois and Black Spanishgrapes was something resident Jeff Tentschert wasnot going to miss. “While I’ve been fortunate enoughto visit wineries in both California and France, andeven make my own wine, the main reason I volun-teered to help hand pick the FCC grapes was to hangout with my neighbors here. Because of these types ofgreat community events, this neighborhood is differ-ent than any I've lived in before,” notes Jeff.

“Fulshear Creek Crossing is incredibly social andfun. Frankly, this was just another in a list of eventsthat FCC Developer Doug Konopka has organizedthat really help to create a sense of community here.”

The group harvested an estimated 900-1,000 lbsof grapes. Following the pruning session, volunteerswere toured Vintners Own winery in central Houston,FCC’s bottling partner.

Explains Simona, “After our tour, we sortedthrough all of the grapes using a special siftingmachine and took out any leaves, spiders, and stemsby hand. Then we took the grapes to a compactingtype of machine and from there the juice goes to thebarrels.”

“Fulshear Creek Crossing is the only residentialdevelopment that I know of that grows its own grapesand makes its own wine,” says Simon. “I believe thehomeowners enjoyed the process and are excited totaste their own wine this Christmas.”

Having a vineyard just down the street is anexcellent perk of living in FCC and gives wine-savvyresidents like Jeff an even greater appreciation forthe end product. “My wife and I are hoping this willbe a Fulshear Creek Crossing tradition that's carriedon for many years.”
