In spite of some negative headlines about excess supply, high inventory levels and manipulations on the raw material market, two reports from the last few weeks make clear that aluminium as a material is one of the big winners.
Siemens announced the start in 2014 of its production of 1,140 regional train carriages for the new thames-link rail route crossing London from north to south. the project is considered one of the largest railway infrastructure projects in Great britain. the order volume of the trains alone is around 1.8 bn euro. to fulfil this order, Siemens developed a new vehicle, the Desiro City. thanks to its aluminium lightweight const-ruction, it weighs up to 25 percent less than the predecessor model and reduces total energy consumption by up to 50 percent.
Only four weeks later, bmW revealed the series produc-tion model of its i3 all-electrical car which is based on a
revolutionary mix of materials. below its Crp passenger compartment, the i3 has an aluminium space frame. the Drive module houses the battery, the drive system as well as structural and anti-crash functions all integrated in a single structure.

mr. Götz, you have now held the office of eAA Director General for six months. What was on your agenda du-ring that time, and what will be in the next six months? to strengthen the competitiveness of our industry. that’s the top priority. to address the enabling policies that are needed for our sector to be competitive. to explain why aluminium is a superior solution to many of today’s chal-lenges when it comes to smart and sustainable materials. but of course, there were and are other important topics, to mention here only the rising role of recycling and the ambition to deliver a best-in-class and value adding service to all our members.
What is your assessment of the developments in the european aluminium industry until the ALUmINIUm trade fair in October 2014? the invisibility on the current trends in the aluminium market in europe is still very high. Customers order just in time and reduce stocks to the mi-nimum. It also depends on which type of product you take into account. So forecasting is always very conditional.
Having said that, I am convinced some fundamental strengths in aluminium products demand, in markets such as automotive and packaging, will have positive impact on the development.
What will you look forward to most when you visit the trade fair next year? that I‘m not a visitor but an active partner in supporting the positioning of our industry at the leading aluminium fair globally, convinced that this event will give us ample opportunities to prove the innovative power of our material and to promote recycling as the cornerstone of our industry’s sustainability.

Surface treatment and finishing of aluminium is an essential part of the production and value chain. possible applications extend far beyond the common applications in the fields of architecture and design and comprise automotive, aero-space, electronics or mechanical engineering, among others. Hall 13 is the central point of contact for all trade visitors looking for solutions and technologies in these areas. It is “the place to be” for all those offering products and technologies that are part of the process chain of the surface treatment of aluminium: from cleaning to mecha-nical treatment, dyes, anodising, galvanising or chromating through to machinery and plant used in this area.

At ALUmINIUm 2014 two halls will be mostly dedicated to these topics: the motto of Hall 13 is “Surface treatment”, that of Hall 14 “Welding & joining“ as well as “metal working and processing”.

the primary focus of Hall 14 is on the machine tool segment. this is where you will find the suppliers of saws, mills, CNC machining centres, profile bending technology, automation solutions as well as the users of such technologies. Joining technologies also have their place in this hall. Access to the world of metal working at ALUmINIUm 2014 is directly via the main entrance east.
Furthermore, Hall 14 offers quite a range of highlights:the “Welding and Joining pavilion” is the central point of call for joining technologies, and the adjoining Forum offers exhi-bitors and visitors the possibility of learning about the latest developments in this field.

Fraunhofer iFAm offers research and development where casting technology and component development is concerned.Once again, the competence in Casting technology and Com-ponent Development of the Fraunhofer Institute for manu-facturing technology and Advanced materials IFAm provides an exciting insight into the casting technology aspects of research and development. the reSeArCH FOrUm in Hall 14 displays new ideas on the topic of die-casting, precision casting and lost foam casting of aluminium, cast iron, steel and copper. We look forward to being able to demonstrate a special highlight to you, as a World première, the first aluminium coil produced as a technical casting for a large drive unit for Lloyd Dynamo-werke (LDW) of bremen. the particular advantage is in its optimum use of the available installation space due to the casting technology design with variable cross-sectional geo-metry. With a uniform installation space it is thus possible to save on weight and reduce the losses of your electric motor. Whether for applications in large industrial engines or in high torque electric motors in cars, Fraunhofer IFAm presents different casting methods for cast coils in variable sizes.
the latest technology developments from the CASttrONICS® sector for the rFID marking of castings will also be on display. the lost foam casting process enables prototypes, evaluation models and production castings with exceptionally complex geometries. the lightweight material Crp is now also gaining entry to the ALUmINIUm Fair, this is because thanks to the new CArbONAL® technology approach it is being directly combined in the casting with aluminium and thus offers new lightweight construction possibilities and advantages over the conventional jointing technologies such as riveting or adhesion.
