Competition Brief Leeds College of Art Alumni Identity Design Competition Prize £100 The Brief The competition invites Leeds College of Art, Graphic Design and Visual Communication students to design the concept and identity for the alumni association of the College. This first brief is to develop and design a logo and concept with an accompanying colour palette for the alumni of the College which can be used across all alumni marketing and communications. The winning design will be applied to a suite of promotions and may lead to further paid design work for the finished communication materials where necessary. The Concept The logo and identity should be easy to apply to: A hardcopy publication, likely to be an annual newsletter A regular e-bulletin to be sent out to alumni with news and events information A banner, signage for a table at graduation and College events, open days etc. College website – to be used across the new alumni section of the website An alumni leaflet – with information on alumni benefits and how to sign up. Alumni promotional material – table cloth/badge Competition entries must be innovative and have a strong visual identity, which works well as a sub-brand for the Leeds College of Art brand. Considerations This is an exciting project that requires professionalism and excellent time management skills. The competition is organised by the marketing and alumni department; the winning student/s should expect to develop a close working relationship with the department for the duration of the project. The winning work may be used as a piece of graded coursework, by prior consultation with your tutor. Mandatory Requirements Logo – to be used across all alumni communications Colours – a specific colour palette that can be used across all alumni communications. Font – whether existing or suggestions of introducing new fonts Sample newsletter/hardcopy publication use of design for a hardcopy publication. How to enter the competition You are required to submit A2 concept presentation boards that demonstrate the thinking/meaning behind your concept. You also need to submit an example of how the concept will be applied to a newsletter publication. Multiple submissions are allowed. Competition Deadline Final submission to the Marketing department by 5pm Friday 19 April. Winner announced Tuesday 23 April. Usually we ask students to do some more development work to their concept / designs before they are ready to be applied to the suite of promotional material. Prize money The prize money will be paid by cheque once the project is complete. The prize is per team not per member of the team if more than one. It is the team’s responsibility to decide how the money will be divided. Target Audience The target audience is alumni and third year students.Alumni may have graduated just last year, or 50 yearsago, so will range in age and experience of theCollege. They will be a mixture of:

Artists and designers, some known locally,others nationally and internationally regardedCreative industry professionalsFreelancersTeachers and academics

Who is Leeds College of Art? Over the past 160 years, Leeds College of Art hascontributed significantly to the development of arteducation in Britain, having pioneered new ways toteach and to structure qualifications, and ourreputation goes before us, with a plethora of notablealumni throughout the history of the college. Weremain a leading centre for art and design education,and are proud to be one of the few remainingindependent art schools. Every student who haspassed through the college, from its beginnings asLeeds School of Art, to its time as Jacob Kramer andLeeds College of Art and Design, automaticallybecome part of our alumni community. With notablealumni spanning right from the first graduates of 1846,this is a pretty special network and community tobecome a part of. The Alumni Association 2013 sees the first year of an official alumniassociation been introduced by the College, with adedicated member of full time staff to oversee andmanage this new area as Alumni Relations Officer.Past students of the college have and always willbecome alumni automatically, but the College is nowbeginning to introduce a set of benefits for the alumnito access and open up some regular communicationschannels with alumni. This is because the Collegewants to create a lifelong relationship between itselfand the alumni and one that is mutually beneficial.The alumni association will benefit current students,staff and provide a host of benefits for the alumni.
