Dear Patron of the Arts,

As a life-long native of Carrollton, it is my honor to serve as president of the Carrollton Arts Commission. I saw a meme on social media earlier this year that said, “If you think artists are useless, try to spend your quarantine without music, books, poems, movies, paintings and games.” What a true statement! As I write this letter, I must acknowledge the impact the coronavirus had and continues to have on our lives. I used much of my shelter-at-home time to work in my art studio and to paint. However, like the meme, I embraced many other forms of art to keep me sane during the quarantine. My guess is that you and your family did, too. Long story short: the arts matter.

Many of this year’s arts events showcase the enormous wealth of talent within our own community. The Roush Gallery and Galleria will host exhibitions by the Douglas County Artist Guild, Carroll County art teachers, University of West Georgia art faculty and our own Carrollton Artist Guild members. There will be performances by the Carroll Symphony Orchestra, the Carroll Community Wind Ensemble and the Carrollton Jazz Orchestra. Celebrate Christmas in Carrollton with the Community Chorus, who are still going strong after 38 years. Join the Carroll County Community Theatre for Clue: On Stage. Make sure you see the 42nd Georgia Watercolor Society National Exhibition and celebrate the poetry of Georgia Poet Laureate, Chelsea Rathburn, as part of this year’s Visiting Artist Series. Participate in workshops and enjoy the Carrollton Arts Festival this fall. Last but not least, the coronavirus might have postponed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum this spring, but it will be back on the main stage in March, 2021.

There is no need to drive to Atlanta or elsewhere when we’ve got such rich talent in our own backyard. The staff at the Carrollton Center for the Arts has worked hard to plan something for everyone. Be a visitor, participant, sponsor or volunteer. There is no better way to reconnect with each other and our community than by supporting the arts.

Sincerely,Clint SamplesPresident, Carrollton Arts Commission
