If you are a fruit and vegetable grower, cattle farmer, importer or food producer, testing for pesticide residue levels is important. Some health experts claim that even at low levels pesticides entering the food chain are affecting the health of the consumer, increasing the risk of cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and impairing cognitive development in children. Regulatory information Some of the quality programs you may follow Include: • Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) • Australian Pesticide Medicine Authority (APVMA) • Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) • Various major retailer quality assurance programs, FSANZ, Australia’s national food regulator reference maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides acceptable in certain foods. APVMA is tasked with the responsibility of regulating and licencing pesticides up to the point of retail sale and sets the maximum residue limits (MRL) in agricultural produce. The MRL’s are determined in accordance with Codex recommended limits, national diet surveys and Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) guidelines set forth by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations. Once adopted, the MRL’s are listed in FSC 1.4.2 and are commodity specific.
