MBGC President’s Report

Thanks to Mark Bland and his helpers for carrying out the Form 2 on Astir VH-IKS which has returned from repairs by Scott Lennon at Temora. This will improve the availability of single seater aircraft for non glider syndicate members.

Thank you to all members who participated in our recent survey to obtain your views on our future direction. A response rate of 93% was pleasing and would be unheard of in most marketing surveys, although admittedly it did take a little “encouragement” from the President.

The Committee is currently considering the responses from the survey to guide the club in its future planning, particularly in terms of another possible glider purchase.

Safe flying.

CFI Report

Well after six months we finally have the Astir back and it was check flown on Sunday 18

th May.

Thanks to those who assisted me complete the Form 2.

Having the Astir back is a timely reminder for me to talk about checks, as hopefully we will all remember to land with the wheel down. The fact that the ASK-21 and the Pilatus have a fixed U/C is no excuse for not doing a proper FUST check. OPS Directive 01/13 http://www.glidingaustralia.org/Operations/OD1-13.pdf highlights changes to our standard checks. Remember a checklist is an aid to reduce failure by compensating for potential limits of human memory and attention. It helps to ensure consistency and completeness in carrying out a task. They are a critical performance aid used by pilots to assure that the aircraft is properly configured. Checklists are also used to guide pilots in responding to abnormal situations.

In gliding our checks are relatively simple and straight forward compared to military or commercial flying, and they will cover us for any glider type. When I stand and listen to many of you doing your checks it’s surprising how many slight variations I hear! Try and take the time to get the phraseology as per the book. It’s not that difficult and also engages the brain and actually makes you think about the words as you recite them!

Lowering the U/C should be done as soon as you commit to landing and then check the placard during the FUST check.

T - TRIM. Ballast confirmed. Trim set as required.

Terry’s maintenance report

No maintenance report from Terry this month as he and Shirley are exploring the wilds of Iceland with its glaciers, volcanos and wildlife. Here is a report on their intrepid travels.

Absolutely everything is mind bogglingly beautiful and incredible in Iceland. We have never imagined so many stunning waterfalls, steaming cauldrons and spitting geysers. The place is one almighty rumbling eruption zone.

The shot down a glacial valley to the sea is of Seydisfjordur in East Iceland. A herring port with

strategic value. Quite warm at 20C.

Photo: Shirley Knight

The mountains are an ever changing mosaic of jagged icy peaks and volcanos with vast glacial floodplains to the black pebble beaches. Few people, fewer towns.

Black lava and rock make for no out landings. We have seen mountains supporting cloud caps and wave to 20,000’ as far the eye could see.

An incredible experience for any interests especially geology, vulcanology ornithology, everything really. Also stunningly beautiful.

Safety matters

Safety tips from your Safety Committee:

a) When DI’ing the winch, check for wasp nests around the engine.

Recently a wasp nest on the air filter caused loss of power during a launch.

b) Do not leave tail dollies on gliders when parked on the airfield as wind gusts can cause glider movement, with possible collison with other gliders or objects.

c) Ensure the airstrip is clear before launching.

There was a recent occurrence with members working on the north windsock which created a potential hazard if they had not moved clear.

Mark the movie star

Our CFI Mark (Tom Cruise) Bland recently moonlighted as a movie star for filmmaker Ric Williamson who has been contracted by Alpine Shire to produce a film of tourism activities in the Shire.

Our ASK21-GVA was used to demonstrate the attraction of gliding with MBGC to potential tourists to the beautiful Kiewa Valley.

scene. Photo: Andrew Evans

We had the movie shoot well covered with our own paparazzi, professional photographer Detlev Rueff covering the action while filmmaker Ric Williamson filmed the scene and Andrew Evans photographed

the whole operation.

Ranga Scholarship 2014/15

The RANGA (Royal Australian Navy Gliding Association) Scholarship is available again for 2014/15.

The award is not for red headed people (sorry about recycling last year’s joke), but is a single scholarship worth $1500 to be awarded to an applicant who has not previously achieved solo status in any form of aviation.

The award is paid for flying training in gliders.

Our own junior member Brooke Anderson was the lucky recipient of this award in 2011.

Details of the scholarship can be found at this link:
