In the intimate fellowship that exists among you and your fraternitybrethren, give some place to a heart to heart consideration of the realissues of life. 00 not chill the ardor of the man whose ideals are high.Let your larger outlook on life mean to every friend, every brother, abroadening vision and a more earnest devotion to those ends of life thatcan be counted as truly worth seeking.

Our web site continues to be a tremendous asset. We strongly encourageyou to utilize the information on the site to keep yourself informed of

We continue to investigate opportunities for funding The ARCHI and haveexperienced some success in this endeavor. Wouldn't it be great if theArchi were fully self-supporting (via subscriptions and advertising), enablingus to provide our members with free copies?

Please join me in congratulating our award-winning Archi Editor! TheARCHI and its Editors were awarded First Place in the 2002 NorthAmerican Interfraternity Foundation Publications Awards! We expectthis is only the first of many such awards for our fine editorial staff.

N THE NEWS:We're expanding and we're thrilled to announce the Cleisthenes Chapteris on its way back! The Cleisthenes Colony was pledged at the end ofAugust and we fully expect they'll be ready for installation as a Chaptervery soon. The Imhotep Colony at The University of Memphis will befirst, though. Imhotep should be ready for installation within weeks of thisNewsletter reaching you. And we continue to receive correspondence fromindividuals across the nation, all wanting to know how they can reactivatea past chapter, or start a new chapter. With all this in our ExpansionDirector's very capable hands, we are confident that the term "Inactive"will be a thing of the past by the time we meet to celebrate Alpha RhoChi's centennial.

Ubuntu. Our brotherhood. A brotherhood that transcends that cacophony of history and culture of language and reminds us, as Nelson Mandela oftensaid, "Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu."[Translation: "A person is a person because of other people."]

Alpha Rho Chi is on the move! You may have already noticedsome new names and faces, or the new look on the national website[www.alpharhochLorg]. The OPERATIONS Volunteers of Alpha Rho Chiare putting forth some incredible efforts and we have some updates foryou. Hopefully, you've noticed Regional Directors are contacting chaptersat least once a week, alumni associations at least once a month, so pleasefill them in on your successes, your concerns, and let them know how theycan help! We want to hear from you!

Today, I invite all of you to take some time and consider what the brotherhood of Alpha Rho Chi means to you. I encourage you to recommityourselves to the possibility of your life and the role your brothers play inthat possibility. We are inextricably bound together in this ... ubuntu.

And as we take a moment to consider what our brotherhood means to us,this is what our first WGA, Leo Bauer had to say about it:

Adapted from the WGAJs address to the 55th NatIonal ConventIon06 AprIl 2002 Ubuntu,

When we seek out a Brother, whether long lost, or whether a neighbor,Las VegasJ Nevada it is with the knowledge that we are bound up with each other in the

bundle of life.

It refers to gentleness, to compassion, to hospitality, to openness toothers, to vulnerability, to be available to others and to know that you arebound up with them in the bundle of life.

Ubuntu. When I speak of our brotherhood, you know that we share an openness,a vulnerability, for each other.

Ubuntu. When you call me your brother, I know that you and I are bound by ourmutual responsibility and compassion.

Ubuntut

Ubuntu comes from tribal South African languages. It describes a quality ofmutual responsibility and compassion. Bishop Desmond Tutu describes thenotion of ubuntu in this way:

Perhaps I can offer you a new word. One that can break the noise ofhistory and culture that "brotherhood" brings us. And if we can ponderthis ever so briefly, perhaps we can reconnect with the possibility that ourbrotherhood is.

And when we do this, what is lost?

Perhaps what is lost is the heart and soul of the relationship between youand the person you are communicating with. Perhaps what is lost is apowerful call to being something greater than yourself.

For example, we in Alpha Rho Chi often speak of "brotherhood." But howoften do you consider what that word means to you? To me? To whomeveryou are speaking? Or do you, like me, simply tune out the noise of thatword's history and culture-somehow assuming that everyone knows what"brotherhood" means?

Sometimes all that is required is something we have not heard before. Anew word. A turn of a phrase-just enough that it catches our attention andforces us to listen anew. And for once truly consider the possibility of whatis being communicated.

So when we get lost in the noise of our daily communication, as we lose theability to comprehend the wholeness of our communication and are equallyunable to appreciate the details, what do we do? How do we get ourselvesback into the presence of our conversation?

A single word can instill love, compassion or joy.

As our brain is barraged by language each day-with each word communicated being judged and evaluated against its (our) history and culture-weoften get lost in the resulting cacophony. This cacophony is not unlike theLas Vegas Strip and its casinos where we are barraged with so manystimuli that we begin to tune them out. We become unable to comprehendthe wholeness of the experience, nor able to appreciate the detail. So itis with our language, with every word carrying the noise of its past, webegin to get lost.

A single word can instill hatred, violence, or anger.

Language is a funny thing. Funny, not in the amusing sense, but rather inthe puzzling, hard to account for sense. Each word we hear, each wordwe write, each word we read and each word we speak carries with it thefull force of that word's history and culture-our shared history and culturewrapped up in every bit of language we use.

A Policy and Procedure was established that outlines the steps necessaryfor an alumni association to be established or re-established. This is especially timely since the Rabirius Alumni Association is in formation this yearand the Metagenes and Apollodorus Alumni Associations are in variousstages of reformation.

I am pleased to announce that the Mnescicles Alumni Association hasrecently resurfaced. We look forward to seeing some representatives at thenext convention!

Issues and InformatIonAt this year's 55th National Convention, three motions were passedconcerning alumni affairs. A break-out session was also held where varioustopics facing alumni and our alumni associations were discussed.

Alumni dues have been increased to $50 for the next two years. Then thedues will increase on a graduated scale until the alumni yearly dues areequal to the student yearly dues. The payment of alumni dues representsone of the primary obligations of the alumni, which is to support thestudent members. By continuing to pay annual dues, the alumni support thestudents by financing the leadership conference the professional programsat convention, and the nationai publications, including the web site.

in participating in this committee, please contact Nicole Morris, WGAA forfurther information.

I would like to thank each and every member that has supported ourprograms by paying their annual dues. If taken by itself the alumni duespay for the entire publication of the Archi or pay for our annual studentLeadership Conference. Again, Thank you,

An Alumni Association Formation Committee was created at the 55thNational Convention. Michele LeTourneur, President of the MetagenesAlumni Re-organization Effort, and Lenora Nelson, recent Pytheos Alumnaand Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, are the co-chairs. If you are interested

All vendors are invited to participate in Arts Fest, many returning yearafter year to sell their items. The variety of art ranges from photography, pottery and wooden furniture, to glass and metal works. One local streetis even closed for artists to produce chalk drawings over the course ofthe weekend. There is also entertainment including various musical artistsconveniently located in the football field across from the chapter house anda stage in the middle of the vendor circuit. The university has even startedan After Fest which sets up bands on campus.

Who are they?

Because of the university's location-in the middle of nowhere-Arts Festgives the alumni and current students a common weekend to reuniteover the summer. There's always time for a chapter meeting held on thefront porch, followed by a BBG in the backyard. All, while the street istransformed into a line consumerism-instead of the usual speeding car. Thevendor stands continue down our street, into and through campus.

And what do we get in return? We have received a wooden rocking chairfor saving many from the rain, two freezes for the world cup game, and afireplace broom for a burger.

The chapter brothers all road trip into State College from their varioussummer residences ... staying in their apartments or at the chapter house. There is always room from more, so let us know if you are coming nextyear.

When it's raining, we give them coverage. When it's time for the world cup, we give them a beverage and a spoton the couch. When they're hungry, we give them food.

They are the vendors that line the streets for one weekend each summerduring Arts Fest trying to sell their art to the masses of Penn Statestudents, alumni, family and friends who return to State College, PA forthe annual event.
