A Message from Your President

Greetings DKG sisters!

I hope that each of you has had an enjoyable and relaxing summer. To those of you

heading back to the classroom soon, we wish you the best for a wonderful year.

The Executive Board met in June and has been busy planning for the upcoming year. We

are trying to make sure our programs are interesting and worthwhile for everyone. Alpha

Zeta has over 90 members who have taught in all grade levels and in all subject areas.

Among us, we have hundreds of years of experience in the classroom! But there is always

more to learn – no matter our age or level of experience. Hopefully, you’ll gain

something from our programs this year, whether it be professionally or personally.

I’m looking forward to serving as your president for the next two years. Please help by

letting me know of any concerns that you may have.

Have a fantastic fall and see you in September at our first meeting of the new year!

News from our Chapter Members

Shirley Allis - This summer I checked many items off my bucket list. My son and I took a 14 day trip to the West Coast. We landed in Portland. We drove from Seattle to San Diego. I crossed off see the Pacific Ocean, Mt. Hood, Monterey Aquarium and the San Diego Safari. It was a great trip. Plus I survived the plane flight. It was an adventure.

Cynthia Devonshire - Phil and I arrived home in early May. Grandchildren have kept us busy for a good part of the summer. We had a new great grandchild, two grandsons graduating, one joined the military. Our granddaughter got engaged and then married, Whew! Phil has been busy with his garden and a few home improvement projects. Like everyone else, we have been trying to keep the grass under control between rain storms. We will be traveling to Maine and New Hampshire to visit with family and friends and to enjoy the New England seafood in August. Time passes so quickly. The updates to the Alpha Alpha State and Alpha Zeta websites have taken a considerable amount of time. The state website is now found at dkgpa.weebly.com. Looking forward to seeing everyone in September.

Sue Mullen - I retired after 36 years of teaching at Sullivan County and I am enjoying it so far.. been to Portland, OR to visit my son and put my foot in the pacific ocean and to the atlantic ocean to a wedding the next weekend. Last weekend I rode in a hot air balloon. I am enjoying life!!

Vicki VanNoy - I finished the Emergency Preparedness Document I started last summer for the county.  It will appear soon on the Bradford County Department of Public Safety Facebook page and in booklet form for the residents of the municipalities throughout the county.  Am most appreciative for the help and advice from the county EMC on compiling the information.  June was busy in Granville with the tornado and recovery efforts for the affected families.  Thankfully no one was injured.  We are very grateful for all the help our neighboring towns and the county EMA provided. My family from West Virginia visited in July and brought the newest member of the VanNoy clan, Afton Paul.  We have a cute picture of him in a family cradle that has rocked 8 generations of the family including his great, great, great, great grandfather, Afton Larcom.  I enjoyed volunteering at the LeRoy Heritage Museum and the Bradford County Farm Museum and Heritage Village and with our congregation.

Linda Ferrario - On July 4th Bob and I joined 51 other area residents for the Northeast Bradford Foundation rail trip across the Canadian Rockies. The Gold Leaf service was unbelievable with domed cars, reclining seats and great meals and service. After 2 days on the train we traveled by motor coach through 2 national parks. Our hotels were top of the line. We saw a variety of wild life and walked on a glacier. I even played golf in Banff with 3 fellow travelers. We ended our 8 day trip by attending the Calgary Stampede. The entertainment and fireworks were spectacular. Our travelers included fellow Alpha Zeta members Naomi Edsell, Marianne Hennip and Joyce Roof.

Alpha Alpha State Convention Notes

9 Alpha Zeta Sisters attended the Alpha Alpha State Convention in State College. On Saturday night at the

President’s Banquet outgoing President Shirley Allis passed the rose to incoming President Ruth Olson.

Pictured from left to right is Carol Lane, Deb Fitzwater, President Ruth Olson, Linda Nickerson, Mary

Herman, Shirley Allis, Claire Waldmeyer and Joyce Kerrick. It was a beautiful night and ceremony. Deb and

Claire had the honor to escort Past State Alpha Alpha Presidents to their tables.

Sunday morning at the Celebration of Life Ceremony Alpha Zeta Sisters Virginia Hough and Barbara

Fleming names were read and a candle lit and a white rose placed in the vase pictured above during the

Ceremony. The painting of the tree in the photo was on loan to Alpha Alpha from local Sylvania, Pa artist

Connie Sickler. The sketch photo beside the table is of a past Alpha Alpha State President Carol Ulrich. A

choral group of 7 singers sang What is Life, I Saw a Tree and For Just a Little While. Linda Nickerson was a

member of the Celebration of Life choral group and Carol Lane was a Reader for the Remembrance.

Ceremony. A print of the Tree of Life by Connie Sickler was given out at the end of the ceremony. What a

beautiful Celebration of Life for our departed Sisters.
