Nov. 24, 2015 Foundation News is a monthly newsletter produced by the MGH Health Foundation, the fundraising arm to MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. The goal of this publication is to provide information about the foundation, share stories of our donors and offer ways to support our hospital. Foundation NEWS Spread the Holiday Spirit by Giving Back It’s the time of the year to express our gratitude with the joy of giving back. As we round the end of November, many of us will be spending Thanksgiving with friends and family, giving thanks to those we love most. The last place anyone wants to be this holiday season is a hospital. But when that can’t be helped, our goal is to make sure each and every patient is as comfortable as possible. This December, join the MGH Health Foundation in supporting the patients and families at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center by making a tax-deductible donation to your hospital. With every $1 you donate, you are changing the life of one patient, one friend, one loved one. Your one act of generosity can impact an entire community. Make a difference this holiday season with a philanthropic gift to MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. Visit MedStarMontgomery.org/HolidayGiving to give a tax-deductible year-end gift today. On Thursday, Oct. 29, members of the Xi Sigma Omega Chapter in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. donated 28 Cancer Care Kits to our Infusion Center patients at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, including lemon drops to help with the metallic taste, cow udder cream for extra sensitive skin, tissues, lip balm, hand sanitizer, and more. Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., an international service organization founded in Washington, D.C., has a membership of more than 250,000 college-educated women around the world who are involved in the global community through advocacy and service. “We have many members who are cancer survivors, so it hits closer to home for us,” explains LaDonna Howell, member of the Xi Sigma Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. “It is an important cause within our community. We welcome the opportunity to support all those who are battling cancer and who have battled cancer.” We would like to thank the members of the Xi Sigma Omega Chapter in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. for their generous donation to our cancer patients. Spread the Holiday Spirit by Giving BackIt’s the time of the year to express our gratitude with the joy of giving back. As we round the end of November, many of us will be spending Thanksgiving with friends and family, giving thanks to those we love most.

Nursing Scholarship Recipients Meet the Grant Gatekeeper of the Florence Nesh Charitable Trust In 2013, the Florence Nesh Charitable Trust donated $30,000 to the Advanced Nursing Education Fund at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, which provides scholarships for our nurses to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. Then in July of 2015, the Florence Nesh Charitable Trust granted us an additional $20,610 for our nurses.

Letieri Schnor, project planner/gatekeeper of the Florence Nesh Charitable Trust, contacted the foundation office requesting to meet some of the nurses who have received a scholarship at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. On Wednesday, Nov. 4, Ms. Schnor met with some of the recipients about their plans for the future, reasons for pursuing their degrees and the impact it has on patient care.

Thanks to the Florence Nesh Charitable Trust and all gifts made to the Advanced Nursing Education Fund. We have awarded 16 nurses 26 scholarships to pursue their degrees in health care. To donate to the Advanced Nursing Education Fund, please visit MedStarMontgomery.org/FoundationNews.

Renovation of the Medical Staff Lounge: Gifted by Helen W. BoyerEarlier this month, we began renovations on the Medical Staff Lounge, thanks to the generous donation from Helen W. Boyer, a longtime friend of MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. The Boyer family has been a part of our community for over a century, generously contributing to the growth of our hospital. Beginning with Dr. M. McKendree Boyer, Mrs. Boyer’s late husband, who worked alongside our founder, Dr. Jacob Wheeler Bird.

The new Medical Staff Lounge will have more comfortable seating, upgraded amenities and a new design. It is scheduled to be completed in February 2016. Until the renovations are complete, we ask our Medical Staff professionals to use the amenities in the Library as a break room.
