HistoryALOVEBALI was founded in 2003 by two investors from the Netherlands, visitors to Bali for many years, witha sincere love for the island and its people. After a successful pilot, the rst plantations wereacquired during 2006. During 2007 our state-of-art factory was built, which opened its doors in April2008. During 2008 and 2009 we completed our organizational setup, quality certications, productdevelopment and initiated our network of professional partners and distributors.

Our company started with a handful of people. We currently provide employment for close to 150 people inour factory and over 500 people at our plantations. Although almost all our employees are locals, the entirecompany is under European management.

Ambition and missionstatementAmbition:We are committed to become the best-in-class #1 AloeVera company in the world in 2015.

    Three pillar mission statement:

We promise our customers the best quality Aloe Vera

and excellent service, our employees a safe workingenvironment and security of income and the people ofBali sustainable business without any harm to theenvironment.

Social responsibilityOur company was created to develop the local economy and provide employment in Bali. Our company waspartly funded by the Dutch government due to its social nature. The dramatic events in the 1999-2005period, caused a back-clash of the entire Balinese economy. Our company philosophy is to increaseprosperity through sustainable business and economical development. By providing a secured income weenable personal growth and development among the people in rural Bali.

Although Bali is famous for its rice elds, the rice market offers only little return per acre. Due to theintroduction of genetically modied rice, farmers were able to harvest rice three times more often.Unfortunately this caused a water shortage in the lowland. As Aloe Vera is a crop that needs little water, our company developed a Plasma model that provided an alternative to the farmers. Our Plasma Systemensures the Balinese farmers to get sufcient training and support while cultivating Aloe Vera, a higherreturn per acre in comparison to rice and ALOVEBALI guarantees sales to the farmers. Furthermore, weprovide micro-crediting during the covering period between conversion and the rst harvest. This systemis not only important as a nancial development but also changes the mindset of people that have beencultivating rice for generations as we believe in a holistic approach when address social challenges.

Development & growthOur company closely cooperates with local and international universities and scientist in order to develop

new products and continuously increase quality. As a new player in the global Aloe Vera market we areconstantly developing and improving our organization each day. We intend to double our operations annuallyand grow from a annual capacity of 1,5 mln liters Aloe Vera Extract to a capacity of 15 mln litres within thenext ve years.

Aloe Vera: a brief introductionAloe, also written Alo, is a genus containing about four hundred species ofowering succulent plants. The most common, well known and highestquality of these is Aloe Vera or Aloe Barbadensis Miller. Aloe Vera is a stemless or very short-stemmed plant. The margin of the stem is serrated andhas small white teeth. The species are widely naturalized all over the world, occurring in temperate and tropical regions. Aloe Vera is a cactus like plant,

although belonging to the lily family, of which the leafs are lled with gel. This gel is the most important component of the plant.

Because of the functioning and applicability Aloe Vera becomes more andmore popular as a useful additive for many products. Aloe Vera is one of thefew nature products with more than 200 different types of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, anti-oxidants and trace elements. Besides this, thehealing functioning of Aloe Vera is dened by the quantity of Aloverose(polysaccharides, Acemannan) in the gel. This Aloverose contributes to anacceleration of the production of white blood cells and new skin warrants. Moreover it reduces inammation and heals small wounds. Health problemsfor people and animals are frequently similar and therefore Aloe Vera is also

applicable in animal products. The distinctive quality of Aloe Vera is reectedby the quantity of Aloverose which it possesses.

Aloe Vera has become common in cosmetic, dietary supplements, pharmaceutics and food & beverageindustry. Nowadays the understanding of the active compounds, transparency on quality and clinicalreports brings the application of Aloe Vera to a higher level by transforming this common additive into avaluable active-ingredient.

The plant is built up form several layers, with the skin and sap layer forming the outer part of the plantwhich contains anthraquinones. The mucilage layer and the gel llet form the inner part of the plant andwithin these two inner layers the most precious bio-active compounds, nutrients and moisture are stored. The natural chemical constituents of Aloe Vera can be categorized in the following main areas:

Bali shows to be a perfect location for the cultivation of Aloe Vera. Due to the volcanic soil, tropicalclimate and special selected Aloe Vera Barbadenis specie, the level of polysaccharide i.e. Aloverose isextremely high. Our company owns approximately 30 ha in Bali where cultivation is done by localemployees. Next to these plantations, we developed a so called plasma model which allows very closecooperation with the local farmers. Under this model our company cultivates close to 150 ha all over thenmiddle and east of rural Bali. Our company values their relation with the Indonesian department of Agricul-ture and the various cooperatives of farmers in Bali.

Organic cultivation methodsALOVEBALI has cooperated with specialists from the Netherlandsand Bali as well as the Indonesian government and universities inorder to ensure Organic cultivation methods since the start of ourplantations. Our farmers and of course our company take greatpride in our complete natural and Organic growing methods. Allplantations and farmers under our control are not only prohibitedto use chemical pesticides, growth enhancers or fertilizers, theyare also offered extensive training and good alternatives to workwith. Our company fully embraces the principles of Organic and

biologic agriculture. ALOVEBALI also takes an effort in helping theirneighboring lands to develop sustainable cultivation methods, isinvolved with the Bali Organic movement and a member of IFOAM.Our company will never compromise the quality and purity of theirproducts and will provide their customers only with the best AloeVera.

Plasma SystemOur company developed a special program in anticipation ofthe introduction of Japanese rice in the Balinese market. Manyof the farmers in the lower areas did not have enough water togrow rice anymore. The farmers who did, were confronted with

an oversupplied market. ALOVEBALI developed a plasma systemas a result. Under this system farmers are trained to grow AloeVera. Our company provides them with Aloe Vera crops andcoaches them during cultivation. As it takes up to three yearsbefore the rst Aloe Vera leaves can be harvested we providean advance on future sales to the farmers equivalent to theamount of money they could make growing rice during thesame period. This form of micro-crediting as well as the factthat farmers keep their own land while still receiving fullsupport makes is very attractive to participate. The system isvery successful and has been many times in the Indonesiannews for being both innovative and social responsible.

HarvestingThe Aloe Vera plants need at least two, and preferably three, years to become fully grown. At the momentthe leaves are starting to hang outwards they are ready to be harvested. ALOVEBALI is very careful thatonly fully grown leaves are being harvested because these leaves hold high levels of bio-active compounds. The way of harvesting is none-destructive and allows plants to grow for several years. All our plantationsare within an hour drive from the processing facility in order to prevent the deterioration of the bio-activecomponents within the leaves. During harvest as well as all other processing steps ALOVEBALI ensures thatonly the best leaves are being used to produce our products.

Fast stabilisation processVarious scientic research shows that after Aloe Vera leaves have been cut enzymatic activity starts as asign of degradation. After approximately six hours this enzymatic activity reaches such high levels that itwill reduce the biological active compounds in the leaves. Within 24 hours the majority of valuablebio-active compounds has been lost. The rst step for stabilizing the biological activity in the leaves is thedrainage of Aloin and extraction of the gel, as in this state enzymatic activity is already reduced.

ALOVEBALI is capable to complete total production within eight hours after harvesting.

Aloe Vera Gel llet methodRegarding the processing of Aloe Vera there areseveral methods to be used. The Whole Leaf Methodwill grind complete Aloe Vera leaves or plantsenabling Aloin to mix with the inner gel. Our lletingis conducted under a specially developed processwith state-of-art equipment, draining the Aloin beforeproduction and extracting the inner gel from theleaves in a fast and efcient way.

LTLT, HTST technology and shock coolingBesides the enzymatic reaction, the biological activecompounds in Aloe Vera are extremely vulnerabletowards heat treatment. In order to keep thepolysaccharide chains intact ALOVEBALI uses HighTemperature Short Time technology which willexpose the gel only for a short amount of time toheat. After HTST treatment the gel is immediatelycooled using a shock cooling system that will bringthe temperature back as low as ve degrees Celsiuswithin seconds. In order to ensure requirements fromother customers it might be necessary to stabilize

the Aloe Vera by applying a Low Temperature LongTime stabilization method, this is also a possibility.

True Aloe VeraWe want to provide our customers with a real, a true, Aloe Vera product. A product that lives up to healthbenecial expectations that our customers have for Aloe Vera, in other words the Aloe Vera will remaineffective after processing. We ensure the level of bio-active compounds inall our products. All our products are H-NMR tested and come with a veried specication of the Aloveroselevel.

UMF concentrationConventional concentration of Aloe Vera involves anevaporation process of which the heat mostly damagesthe bio-active compounds in the Aloe Vera. Our companyuses advanced Ultra Filtration on a Molecular level. Thisway the precious active compounds are secured.

Process innovationOur company is constantly improving their operationsand cooperating with professional institutions to innovateour process and products. We strive to completelysatised customers 100% of the time and understand

that customer satisfaction starts in our operations.
