Dear Fans,
Aloha!
Welcome to the inaugural Hawai’i All-Star Football Classic! We are excited about the launch of thisnew tradition which will create great football memories and great football opportunities for the ath-letes you see today.
For SportsLink, this event was a natural. For nine years now, SportsLink has produced the U.S.Army All-American Bowl on NBC, which brings together the best players in high school footballunder the roof of the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas. The Bowl has featured NFL athletes likeAdrian Peterson, Brady Quinn and Vince Young as well as Heisman Trophy Winners Reggie Bushand Tim Tebow.
We see the same talent emerging across the Hawaiian Islands, American Samoa and on the main-land where top Polynesian athletes are turning heads. By organizing this talent on one field, webelieve that this event will be the next big showcase of prep talent.
We look forward to someday telling similar stories about the Hawai’i All-Star Football Classic andthe players whose breakout performances were on this field! The talent is clearly there.
This game is possible because of the outstanding support of Mayor Mufi Hannemann, the HUBFoundation and the HHSAA, who care deeply about promoting and providing a first class experi-ence to these great athletes and simply made this event happen overnight. We also want to thankErnest Nishizaki and the Kyoya Company who graciously opened their doors to our athletes.
Aligning with The HUB Foundation and their long history and commitment to the youth of Hawaiiis also a thrill for us. The HUB Senior Bowl Goodwill Classic was one of the first and greatest all-stars games on the map.
We here at SportsLink look forward to this inaugural game and many return trips to the islands. Infact, Football University, our invite-only football experience for elite athletes, will be hitting theisland this spring to provide the nation’s most elite training by the NFL’s best instructors to the top200 athletes from Hawai’i (6th to 11th grade). For information on how Hawaii’s best athletes cantrain for three days with former NFL stars, I would encourage you to check out www.footballuni-versity.org
Enjoy today’s Hawai’i All-Star Football Classic and the opportunity to see some of the nation’sbest talent on display and thank you to everyone for gracious hospitality.

Aloha and Welcome!
On behalf of the Hawaii Union Builders Foundation, it is my great pleasure to welcome you toan experience of athletic spirit and pride quite unlike any other in the islands. Tonight, we kickoff the Eighteenth Annual Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl at Aloha Stadium with many of Hawaii’spremier student athletes taking the spotlight.
And tonight we are kicking off the first annual Hawaii All-Star Football Classic, a doubleheaderalso featuring the first-ever Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl that highlights the best athletesfrom Hawaii, Polynesia and the Mainland. We are excited about partnering with SportLink tobring Hawaii fans this double-header where more of our Hawaii high school seniors can beshowcased. This new double-header truly carries on our long-standing all-star tradition.
Eighteen years ago, the HUB Foundation established the Goodwill Senior Bowl as a means ofshowcasing the outstanding student talent found throughout Oahu’s public and private schools. We have had many important partners from union, business, education, and the communitywho have cooperated and shared resources in order to make this game a reality. We have alltaken great pride in “investing” in the youth of Hawaii as they will no doubt be our leaders oftomorrow.
Each year, in the moments prior to the start of the big game, I have the privilege of spendingtime with both all-star teams. Never do I leave those locker rooms without feeling just a bit awe-struck by the energy, the inner strength, and the commitment level that I see in these specialyoung people. It is evident that their individual success is driven by tremendous purpose, ded-ication and hard work.
Over the year the Goodwill Senior Bowl has become a “must-see” event for local and nationalrecruiters who have lured many of our fine athletes to outstanding institutions. Many dreamshave been given flight as a result of this “challenge of the champions.”
The HUB Foundation remains firm in our belief that it is our youth who are Hawaii’s strength andfuture. We congratulate the achievements of those student-athletes who participate in tonight’sevent, and give thanks to those special parents, teachers and coaches who believe in and helpsupport them every step of the way.

The First Annual Hawaii All-Star Football Classic
How it all startedThis year’s crop of Hawaii high school senior football players made the Hawaii All-StarFootball Classic happen tonight.
Hawaii has always been a hotbed for making warriors on the football field. From Hawaii’sfirst consensus All-American Herman Wedemeyer to Charlie Wedemeyer, Jesse Sapoluand Maa Tanuvasa, and now Vince Manuwai, Sampson Satele, Timmy Chang and ChadOwens, along with the many more players from the past and present have carried onHawaii’s football culture with pride.
With no disrespect to the talent that has come before, the 2009 Senior Class is proving tobe the best in the country and how great a source Hawaii is in producing all-star players. The amount of four-and five-star athletes in this group is what made Sportslink, a sports-marketing and management company that produces and oversees many sporting eventsincluding the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, take notice.
Sportslink president, Rich McGuinness initiated con-tact with Mayor Mufi Hannemann and Hawaii HighSchool Athletic Association director Keith Amemiyato hold the Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl on Oahuto showcase the incredible talent of the Hawaii student-athletes on a national level.
Under Mayor Hannemann’s leadership, this led to apartnership with the Hawaii Union Builder’sFoundation headed by Herb Kaopua and WayneChun, who for the past 18 years has held theGoodwill Senior Bowl to showcase Oahu’s highschool senior football talent, raise funds for local high schools, and provide scholarshipsfor college-bound athletes. HUB agreed to present the Hawaii All-Star Football Classicwith the Goodwill Senior Bowl as the first game and the new Hawaii/Polynesia-MainlandBowl as the second game in this exciting doubleheader.
By building on the HUB Foundation’s long-standing Goodwill Senior Bowl coupled with thenew Hawaii/Polynesia-Mainland Bowl, Mayor Mufi Hannemann saw this partnership as anexciting opportunity to bring national attention to Hawaii’s best of the best and showcaseplayers of Polynesian ancestry.
The first-ever Hawaii All-Star Football Classic doubleheader tonight will feature about 140Hawaii all-stars and about 10 mainland players with Hawaii ties along with about 40 of thenation’s top prep players and a few players from American Samoa.
The Hawaii’s 2009 Senior Class continues Hawaii’s football culture with the likes of PunahouSchool’s Manti Te’o, Hilo High School’s Jordan Loeffler, Baldwin High School’s Mana Rosa,Waimea High School’s Siasau Matagiese, and many more Hawaii all-stars. All stars who willsurely shine bright for Hawaii.
Mahalo to Hawaii’s Goodwill Senior Bowl Steering Committee EmeritusMembers, Charlie Bessette and Herbert Horita, for their unwavering sup-port of the HUB Foundation.
Charlie BessetteCharlie, a four-sport athlete at McKinley High School, was on track to attendUH, but World War II delayed his collegiate career. He spent three and a halfyears serving in the Army and later earned a Purple Heart.
At UH, Bessette lettered in football, basketball and baseball, but it was on thegridiron where he made a name for himself. He was considered a triple threat -he could pass, run and punt. During the 1948 Pineapple Bowl against the
University of Redlands, he scored three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score giving theRainbows a 33-32 come-from-behind victory.
Following his collegiate career, Bessette spent time as the public relations director for theHawaii Islanders minor league baseball team and served as both the events manager and gen-eral manager at Aloha Stadium before his retirement in 1988.
Herbert HoritaHerbert was the youngest of five children of one of Hawaii’s first general con-tractors, Shigeru Horita. He graduated from Farrington High School in 1948,attended the University of Hawaii and the Honolulu Business School.
In 1952, Herbert joined S. Horita Construction while he developed an interest inreal estate. In 1957, he sold his first house for his father’s company. A couple ofyears later, he started Herbert K. Horita Realty Inc.
Herbert is now one of the largest local developers in Hawaii with his company, The HoritaGroup, Inc., which has developed and sold over 13,000 single-family, town home and condo-minium units, over 500 hotel rooms, 336,000 square feet of leasable commercial space and 239acres of industrial land.

The HUB Foundation and its Hawaii Goodwill Senior Bowl
A Tradition of Giving
The HUB FoundationAlmost 20 years ago, the HUB Foundation began when it was first organized as the HawaiiBuilding & Construction Trades Council, Educational & Charitable Foundation, or the BTCFoundation.
Chairman Herbert S. K. Kaopua, Sr., initiated the creation of a charitable and educational foun-dation dedicated to “giving back” to Hawaii’s youth. The directors of the Foundation were com-prised primarily of construction industry unions who were affiliated with the Hawaii BuildingTrades Council.
In the year 2000, the Foundation became an independent organization, expanding its member-ship to include unions and organizations representing working people throughout the statebeyond the construction industry. By increasing its affiliation, the Foundation was able toexpand the scope of resources to accomplish its mission.
The Foundation selected the Hawaii Union Builders Foundation or HUB Foundation as its namesignifying the Foundation as a “hub” or center of activity through which the youth of Hawaii willbenefit. Another aspect of the name gives tribute to the “builders” or leaders of Hawaii’s unions.
The goal of the HUB Foundation remains to develop and implement programs, services, andactivities of a charitable nature designed to benefit the children of Hawaii by encouraging excel-lence in a broad spectrum of endeavors including academics, athletics, and music.
As a means of “giving back,” the HUB Foundation has contributed extensive time and effort increating independent, reliable annual fundraisers, including its Goodwill Senior Bowl, that haveraised significant funds for Hawaii’s schools.
Over the years, the HUB Foundation has generated over $557,000 in funds and scholarshipsthat have been distributed to deserving Hawaii students. These funds have made the dreamsof a college education a reality for many of Hawaii’s future leaders.
Hawaii Goodwill Senior BowlThis post-season thriller was created in 1991 by a steering committee of local coaches andHUB Foundation members determined to revitalize the concept of a prep all-star game basedon “goodwill” and fellowship. A true community event, the Goodwill Senior Bowl is an inspira-tional battle of champions in a classic East versus West showdown.
