Dear Partner,

The peak of the global economic crisis is already several years behind us. Its impact on the poultry industry has been substantial as investments in greenfield hatcheries, hatchery extensions and hatchery equipment were delayed. The econo mic crisis, however, has had a positive influence on the poultry industry too. Since poultry is a cost-effective protein source, consumers have shifted consumption to poultry meat.

In the past decade, the poultry industry’s behaviour has altered. Globalisation, economic pressure and bio-security awareness have increased buyers’ purchasing power and have made customers more demanding. This forces hatchery managers to maximise the perform-ance of their hatcheries. Producing uniform and healthy chicks is key to achieve this goal. In this newsletter, we elaborate on Synchro-Hatch™, a Petersime technology that allows the produc-tion of uniform chicks on an industrial scale.

The poultry industry is evolving differently in various geographical regions. Russia is increas-ing its national poultry production capacity in order to depend less on import. Brazil, a major poultry-exporting country, enjoyed an increasing demand from its internal market which compensated for its declining export market in 2009. Since 2010 Brazilian poultry export is reviving. Asia keeps growing and some major hatchery investment projects are taking place. This newsletter focuses on the hatchery market in Russia.

Meanwhile, technology is developing at light-ning speed. Today, people want to be in contact with each other and with their business at any time and from anywhere in the world. Commu-nication in real time allows you to manage your business without the need to be present your-self. Petersime provides the tools to be always in contact with your hatchery. In this newsletter, you will learn how you can benefit from iPad technology in your hatchery environment.

We wish you a happy reading.

Almarai Company is the leading food and beverage manu-facturer in the Middle-East. The group is

bran ching out its ambitions into new areas and has started the roll-out of its plans to become a major poultry producer. In 2009 Almarai acquired Hadco, a well-established poultry integrator based in the city of Hail in Saudi Arabia. Today, Almarai’s unique blend of state-of-the-art facilities and unmatched marketing and distribution exper-tise put the company in the perfect position to quickly become one of the undisputed leaders in the poultry industry.

Besides incubation equipment, Petersime designs, delivers and installs the complete climate control system of the new hatch-ery, equipped with a differential air pressure control system that ensures minimum energy use combined with optimum hygiene. The entire water chilling and distribution system as well as the electrical system are also designed

by Petersime. All handling of eggs and chicks - from start to finish - will be fully automated.

Mr John Traynor, Construction Projects Manager of Almarai’s Farm-ing Division: “My goal is to build the greenfield hathery within the budget, time frame and industry-leading quality standards of Almarai. My team is working closely together with Petersime’s Project Department, since they not only supply the incubation equipment, but also all additional hatchery equipment such as climate control systems and automation.”

Entirely in line with its reputation, Almarai opted for the most up-to-date incubation technology available on the market. Since its poultry project is fully integrated - including breeder farms, hatch-ery, growing facilities, slaughter plant, and logistics - the benefits of Embryo-Response Incubation™ will be fully achieved within the company. Day-old chicks hatched in BioStreamer™ incubators are clearly superior in broiler perform-ance compared to chicks hatched

the traditional way. Their improved feed conversion and lower on-farm mortality undisputedly reduce poultry meat production costs.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Almarai to apply its recognized know-how in farming, food production and logistics into the fast growing segment of high-quality poultry meat production,” says Mr Andrew Mackie, General Manager of the Farming Divison.

The air handling units are installed under the roof structure of the hatcher rooms.

Air handling ducts ready to be installed The Almarai hatchery has one air cooled chiller (a) and two water cooled chillers (b) for optimal energy management.

Bounty Fresh Food Inc. continues investments in S-line incubators

In early 2009, the leading Filipino poultry producer Bounty Fresh Food made a decisive move towards single-stage incubation by installing Petersime’s BioStreamer™ incubators in the framework of their Tarlac broiler hatchery expan-sion. Commissioned in 2010, the company was impressed with the improved results, and the man-agement very quickly decided to replace all of the multi-stage incubators with BioStreamer™ incubators, featuring Embryo- Response Incubation™ technolo-gies.

The new contract includes Bio-Streamer™ 24S setters with Ovo-Scan™ sensors and BioStreamer™ 8H hatchers with Synchro-Hatch™ scanners. The total setting capacity at Tarlac hatchery will reach 1,500,000 eggs per week. Petersime will also deliver and install the air condition-ing equipment for the installation.

“When we saw the increased hatch performance of our newly installed BioStreamer™ incubators, we imme-diately decided to replace our other incubators,” says Kenneth Cheng,

owner of Bounty Fresh Food Inc. “Although these incubators are only 11 years old, we are convinced that the investment in the new BioStream-er™ technology will provide us with an increased return on investment.”

With this new investment, Bounty Fresh Food Inc. continues to be the forerunner in using single-stage incubation technology in the Philippines.

Less than three months after the installation of its first Petersime BioStreamer™ incubators, Bounty Fresh Food has decided to replace all of its multi-stage incubators at the Tarlac broiler hatchery with BioStreamer™ setters and hatchers.

Focus on RussiaIn the course of the past few years Petersime has observed a number of in-teresting evolutions in the global poultry market. One of the main tendencies is Russia’s expansion of its national poultry meat pro-duction capacities in order to depend less on import.

Petersime’s activities in Russia stretch over more than a decade. They started in 2000, when the first hatchery of poultry farm Tyumenski Broiler was established. Since then, the number of hatcheries working with Petersime equipment has been increasing steadily, and today Russia’s leading poultry players are operating with our equipment. By the time we released the successful new range of S-line incubators in 2010, more than 30 hatcheries had already been equipped with Peter-sime AirStreamer™ incubators.

When it comes to choosing hatch-ery equipment, Russian hatchery managers put a high value on the reliability of their supplier before,

during and after sales. With many decades of experience in incuba-tion technologies and turnkey hatcheries and with an extensive 24/7 customer service, Petersime has become the partner of choice in Russia.

Petersime incubators are primarily operating in broiler-producing firms, but incubators have been installed in layer and turkey hatch-eries as well. Some references are given on page 5.

Establishing local support

In order to be closer to its clients and to provide an even better service, Petersime set up a regional office in Moscow in 2010, Petersime OOO. Clients can contact the office with questions about virtually any-thing, ranging from sales to techni-cal issues. Russian specialists know the European standards as well as the Russian climate circumstances. They have the correct answers to technical questions and can quickly get to the hatchery if necessary.

“The establishment of Petersime OOO opens unique opportunities to provide

the best service to our current clients and to attract new ones. We are con -vinced that Petersime’s innovative technologies will help Russian poultry producers significantly improve their production efficiency and thus add to the development of the country’s poul-try industry,” says Anna Nemtseva, Director of Petersime OOO.

Hatchery managers need quick access to consumables and spare parts. As the demand for spare parts from AirStreamer™ and S-line incubators in Russia is on the rise, a warehouse of spare parts will be opened in Moscow soon.

Russian specialists can rely on con-siderable support from the head-quarters in Belgium. If necessary, the Service Department will perform a technical audit of the equipment, and incubation specialists will opti-mize the incubation settings and ex-plain how to obtain the best results. The service website, containing about 60,000 pages of information, is also available in Russian.

Already in 2010, Petersime OOOorganized its first seminar on AirStreamer™ incubators in the Petersime headquarters in Belgium. Members of the seminar could learn all about Petersime incubators and tech-nical incubation parameters. A visit to a working hatchery in Belgium was also included in the programme.

A second seminar in Russia is currently being planned.

Petersime expands Command Centre with iPad application

Connect your incubators to a network

All S-line incubators are equipped with IrisLink™, an interface that al-lows you to connect every incuba-tor in your hatchery to one single network. With IrisLink™, you can easily download and upload data from and to your incubators, such as incubation programmes. What’s more, the interface provides an in-stantaneous overview of the status of the incubators. IrisLink™ is based on an open standard network pro-tocol, which guarantees that you

will always be able to benefit from the latest evolutions in network technology.

Get a complete overview of all your incubators from one central location

Petersime has developed the Command Centre user interface, which enables total control of all your incubators from one central location in your hatchery. The Command Centre software runs on a PC connected to the IrisLink™ network.

The Command Centre software includes a graphical user interface that allows you to select a setter or hatcher room in your hatchery and to consult the status of all the incu-bators in that room. By selecting one individual incubator, you have direct control over it.

The Command Centre user inter-face is exactly the same as the user interface on the front of the incu -bator. This results in minimal train-ing requirements for the operator or hatchery manager. It is possible to connect several Command Centre PCs to the IrisLink™ network.

Control your incubators from any place in your hatchery

While the Command Centre allows you to control your incubators from one central location, it is some-times important to get immediate access to all incubators, regardless of where exactly you are in your hatchery. For instance, imagine there is an alarm in one of the incubators while you are working in another area of your hatchery. In this case, you need a device that

managing the day to day operations of a hatchery is a full time job that requires a great deal of commitment and knowledge. moreover, hatcheries are getting more and more sophisticated while competition is becoming increasingly intense. Numerous parame-ters and interferences determine the efficiency, safety, and return on investment of your hatchery. It goes without saying that an adequate system for supervision and control in your hatchery is imperative. Petersime has been the world leader in the incubator market for many decades and knows exactly what is at stake when running a hatchery. We provide the tools that make sure you get the maximum out of your incubators.

is easy to carry and yet provides you with a good user interface and a complete overview of your hatchery. The iPad, combined with Petersime’s new iPad Command Centre support package, provides the ideal solution.

To enable iPad control, a wireless router is connected to the IrisLink™ network. The support package can be activated by simply opening the application on the display of the iPad. It then connects wirelessly

to a Command Centre PC in your hatchery and displays the same user interface as on your Command Centre. In other words: with iPad, everything you can do with your central Command Centre PC is now possible from any location in your hatchery.

Extend control beyond your hatchery

But there is more. You may also want to control your incubators

from outside your hatchery. When you are at home, abroad or travel-ling, you still want to know at any time, from any place and in real time what is happening in your hatchery. Our iPad Command Centre support package makes this possible. For this, we make the data of your incubators available for ex-ternal hatchery access by connect-ing the IrisLink™ network to the modem of your internet provider. The iPad Command Centre support package ensures secured access to your Command Centre PC in your hatchery from anywhere in the world. The only thing you need is a connection to a 3G wireless network or internet hotspot.

Transition from chorioallantoic membrane to lung respiration

10

Why do you need a short hatch window?

Assuming the egg quality and pre-incubation factors such as farm management, transport, storage and fumigation are consistent, high hatch synchronicity mainly depends on optimal embryonic development throughout the in-cubation process. However, it can further be improved by creating stimuli and events throughout the key stages of the hatching proc-ess: internal pipping and external pipping.

Internal pipping

Birds and reptiles undergo a pe-riod in development termed the para natal period when both the chorio allantoic membrane and the lungs are functional. During this period, breathing begins the moment the beak penetrates the inner shell membrane and the chick gets access to the air cell (internal pipping, IP).

Lung respiration requires the production of a special secretory lipoprotein complex in the lungs called lung surfactant. Lung sur-factant is stimulated mainly by the corticosteroid hormone. It reduces surface tension, making it possible for the chick to breath. Factors such as high CO2 or low O2 stimulate the production of corticosteroid and therefore stimulate lung surfactant synthesis and secretion. This ex-plains why mild CO2 stimulation

Your customers want day-old-chicks with good feed conversion, low mortality and weight uniformity at slaughter. Hence, chick uniformity is key as it will give all chicks an equal start in their competition for food and water at the farm. Uniformity is obtained by making sure that all chicks hatch within a short hatch window, which results in chicks with the same biological age at take-off. Due to a long hatch window, some chicks are older than one day and already show signs of dehydration, while others are newly hatched and still wet. Petersime has developed a technology that allows for a short hatch window even when you are incubating on a large industrial scale. This technology is called Synchro-Hatch™.

just before pipping and hatching is beneficial.

By means of temperature and CO2 stimuli, the Petersime Synchro-Hatch™ algorithm controls the internal pipping phase of each individual egg to occur within a target timeframe.

External pipping

Internal pipping is followed by a so-called ‘rest period’ of 8-10 hours, during which the Synchro-Hatch™ algorithm further enhances the level of synchronicity.

Following the rest period, Synchro-Hatch™ generates stimuli in order to induce external pipping (EP).

During EP, chicks use their egg tooth (a protuberance on their upper beak) and coordinated head and body movements to crack (or ‘pip’) and break through the shell. The first pip is visible on the outer surface of the shell, generally as a raised cone-shaped area of small cracks.

There is an important distinction between a cracked shell (external

pipping) and outer membrane perforation. A shell can be cracked while the outer membrane is not yet perforated, since the pressure from the beak can pip the shell without rupturing the membrane. Scientists previously assumed that hypoxia (a shortage of O2 that occurs at the end of incubation) and hypercapnia (a surplus of O2) are relieved as soon as the shell is cracked. However, newer research shows that hypoxia and hypercap-nia are relieved only when the em-bryo gains access to atmospheric air. In other words, both the egg shell and the outer membranes need to be penetrated for the embryo to fully access oxygen. The length of the hypoxia period influences chick quality.

To obtain optimum chick quality, Synchro-Hatch™ sensors detect the peak level of humidity, ensur-ing external pipping has occurred, and lower the stimuli in order to facilitate the relief of hypoxia and hypercapnia.
