At Almadina, though, most students don’t really do anything special. They just remain excited for the new year to begin. Some stay up late, others follow their family traditions every year. Whatever the tradition, everyone has an awesome time celebrating New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. Happy New Year 2015!!!

Christmas by M.Laham & W.Hussain

Calgary, AB Look outside your windows, it’s snowing everybody, so guess what's coming up hot coco, filled presents, long holidays, family gatherings and lots more. At Almadina, some students and teachers

celebrate Christmas. Fatma explained, “I wake up in the morning to an amazing scent of pancakes. I rush to the kitchen and eat my breakfast. After, my parents and I go to the Christmas tree, and we take all the presents that have our names. Then my parents video tape us to see our reactions. After a long day, we go to my aunt's house and have Christmas dinner.” Another person we interviewed at Almadina was Mrs.Rawji; she also explained that Christmas is an excuse for her to invite friends and family over and have Christmas dinner. Another activity, she likes to do on this holiday is play Secret Santa with her family. Some other people we interviewed were Ms.Sheikh, Mrs.Elchamaa and Ms.Lee. Mrs.Sheikh

stated, “I like to put up lights and decorate my house. I also like to invite my family over and pray together.” Mrs. Elchamaa likes to do a lot of baking on this holiday. She also likes to celebrate her son’s engagement by throwing a party. Lastly, Ms.Lee answered, “I take my kids to watch the Nutcracker Ballet. After, I buy my kids a new nutcracker to put on the fire place. Then, I go with my family and watch the play A Christmas Carol. Later, my husband and I get a stuffedelf and hide it. During the 12 days before Christmas my two kids try to find it. We hide it in a different spot every day.” She continues explain that every year each member in the family buys a new ornament and places it on the Christmas tree. She also likes to buy a new boy’s toy and a new girl’s toy and donate it to charity. Now that we know what some people at Almadina do for Christmas, let us discuss what Christmas is about. Do you celebrate Christmas? Most of us do, because it’s the day Jesus was born, but we celebrate

it differently. Therefore, go outside throw, enjoy the snow, take a sled and do something fun because it’s Christmas time!

Merry Christmas everybody!

Hanukkah by: H.Souraya & I.Salman

Hanukkah also known as festival of lights, feast of dedication and a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication. For Hanukkah they use a Menorah (candle holder) to hold 9 candles for 8 days. Then blow one candle out, one day at a time starting on the 25thof Kislev (the 3rd month of the civil year and the 9th month of the ecclesiastical year on the Hebrew calendar) Hanukkah became more widely celebrated in the

1970s, when Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson called for public awareness of the festival and encouraged the lighting of public menorahs. Some Hanukkah festivities include playing dreidel and eating oil based foods such as doughnuts and latkes (grated potato pancakes). The story of Hanukkah Judea was part of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt until 200 BCE when King Antiochus III the Great of Syria defeated King Ptolemy V Epiphanes of Egypt at the Battle of Panium. Judea became, at that moment, part of the Seleucid Empire of Syria. King Antiochus III the Great wanting to conciliate his new Jewish subjects guaranteed their right to "live according to their ancestral customs" and to

continue to practice their religion in the Temple of Jerusalem. In 175 BC, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the son of Antiochus III invaded Judea, at the request of the sons of Tobias. The Tobiads, who led the Hellenizing Jewish faction in Jerusalem, were expelled to Syria around 170 BC when the high priest Onias and his proEgyptian faction wrested control from them. The exiled Tobiads lobbied (influenced) Antiochus IV Epiphanes to recapture Jerusalem. As the ancient Jewish historian Flavius Josephus tells us: The king being thereto (to that place) disposed beforehand, complied (act in accordance with a wish or command) with them, and came upon the Jews with a great army, and took their city by force, and slew a great multitude (large number) of those that favored Ptolemy (name), and sent out his soldiers to plunder them without mercy. He also spoiled the temple, and put a stop to the constant practice of offering a daily sacrifice of expiation (compensation)

for three years and six months. This means, in other words, that they took back their city and killed many soldiers in the Antiochus Army who had spoiled their temple and daily sacrifice for three years and six months. Some Hanukkah foods are Loukoumades are deepfried puffs dipped in honey or sugar to represent the cakes The Maccabees ate, a newer tradition in the United States is the baking of butter cookies or pretzels in the shape of Hanukkah symbols while relating the stories, latkes, and doughnuts . Hanukkah is a special holiday for Jewish People. .

~Perseverance~ by: A. Karoubi & H. Suleyman

Calgary, AB Perseverance is a virtue of never giving up and to keep trying no matter what happens. If you fall down, you never stay down you get up and keep trying that is perseverance. One of our interviewers said, “If I see a kid giving up, I will help him by sitting down with him and I will give him an agenda and tell him to write down what he is struggling with. Once he is done, I will tell him to practice it,” Also, this person thinks that perseverance is an amazing virtue. Perseverance is good for school because it allows to fight against bullying and to create a safe school. It also makes students work hard in order to strive to success. This month, Almadina students are taking part in a schoolwide activity where they need to write down what they were like before, how they are now and what they will be like in the future. (I was, I am, I will…)

A template of what students were to complete for the Perseverance activity. “I think perseverance is a great virtue and we should practice it more often at school,” suggested Zaieem, an Almadina students. He added, “I think the world will be more determined, if perseverance was our main goal.” Mutasim explained, “[Perseverance means,] you will never give up no matter what someone says about you!” There was a man named Spencer West who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with no legs. Other people that have legs can’t even go half way up and climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Imagine how hard it is to

live with no legs but he did not only climb a mountain, he also faced bullying. The meaning of him climbing that mountain is because he wanted to raise money for Africa because Africa had the biggest drought and he wanted to help. He climbed the mountain with his friends and he was about to give up, but he did not stop until he reached the top. On the way, they met some people that helped them when they got lost. He really wanted to help the Africans so that made him more determined to reach the top. Another inspiring story that has to do with perseverance is about a man named Cody McCasland who was born with Sacral Agenesis. Sacral Agenesis is a rare and littleknown condition that causes deformity of the spine. He had to have his legs amputated when he was 15 months old. Cody, now, has artificial running legs fitted, just like Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius.

Derek Redmond, another man who showed perseverance when he was running the Olympic 400 meter sprint. After 150 meters into the race, Derek fell to the ground with a torn hamstring. Not willing to give up, determined to finish the race he continued with the help of his father who ran by his side. His father told him, “You don't have to do this!” Derek replied, “Yes, I do,” then his father responded encouragingly, “Well then let’s do this together!” Together they continued the race. Shortly before the finish line, Derek’s father let go of him to complete the race by himself while receiving an applause from a crowd of 65,000 people. When you don’t give up, YOU CANNOT FAIL!

Derek Redmond, during the 400 meter sprint, as he tore his hamstring.

Cody McCasland

“I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying.” Michael Jordan

“No walls too big to climb.” Rick Hansen Therefore, perseverance is a wonderful virtue. Spencer West, Cody McCasland, and Derek Redmond all dedicated their lives for this virtu leading them to success. As they all agreed that this virtue perseverance was a part of their main goal in life. So everyone look up and preserve, until the sky falls down.

“The greatest waste in the world is the difference between what we are… ...and what we could become.” Ben Herbster

Grade Five Weather Watch!!

In grade five Science students learned “hands on” about measuring the weather. Here they are using weather instruments they created to measure atmospheric conditions outside.

On Dec. 11, David Spence, the meteorologist from CTV news, came to talk about weather in Alberta to the Grade Five students. The most important thing we learned was that if you hear thunder…..GO INSIDE!!

Kamp Kiwanis: A Haven For Children

by: Z.Ishtiaq and M.Salih

Calgary, AB Every year Grade 6 students go to a place called Kamp Kiwanis for three days and two nights. Kamp Kiwanis is an outdoor school, where students can have fun and learn at the same time. Students go to Kamp Kiwanis so they can get a visual idea on trees and forests. Trees and forests are an important unit in Grade 6 Science. The three teachers that went to Camp with the students were Mr. Wong, Mr. Peters, and Ms.Forster. It was an amazing experience. “It was very cold! The experience was great and it was spectacular to see kids learn outside of school. Everyone was excited and they wouldn’t stop talking!” Mr. Wong exclaimed.

Students and counsellors at Kamp Kiwanis

Mr. Peters explained, “My experience was awesome. I had a great time at Kamp. When I look back on the year in June, I think it will be one of the highest points.” One of the activities at Kamp Kiwanis was the animal game. In the animal game you must run away from predators and collect paper water. If you get caught you must lose a life. Another fun activity was venturing into the forest. They investigated trees and drew pictures of their surroundings. “My trip to Kamp Kiwanis was fun because we played loads and loads of games. Another reason I loved my experience at Kamp is because the food was the best food I had ever tasted!” explained Hesher Suleyman. Kamp Kiwanis is an experience students will never forget. Although it was cold, it was really awesome. The counselors were very kind, the forest was beautiful, and last but not least everyone had fun. Outdoor school was one of the best things that happened to some Grade 6 students.

Remembrance Day by: J. Najm and M. Nurid

Calgary, AB Every year, on November 11 we have a moment of silence; “Why?” you ask. It's because we need to remember the brave soldiers who fought for us. We would not have a place to live in if it wasn't for them. These soldiers were not just picked because of their bravery, but because of their hope and faith. Just think, if you were a fighting soldier, would you have been scared? The men and women who weren’t fighting were still not safe because the war affected everyone. As students of Almadina, we had a special fundraiser donate a dollar and receive a paper poppy. As you know we had an assembly as well, based on remembering our brave and wonderful soldiers. Mrs. Elchamaa gave an inspirational speech about all the people that risked their lives for our country and that we should all remember them, no matter what other people say about them. What would you do if you were a soldier? Would you run away from the fight? Would you

_____________________________________ Almadina Panthers Inc. Christmas Issue December 18th, 2014 _________________________________________________________________________

be really afraid? Put yourself in their shoes, wouldn’t you want at least someone to remember you? Respect you? That’s why Remembrance Day is so important to most Canadians.

We need to solve our problems with peace and communication! Not violence.

If you got a chance to go back in time, what would you say to those soldiers? Imagine that someone close to you was a soldier, how would you treat them? Soldiers need to be treated with dignity and respect. The man you made fun of because of the ugly scars, he fought for our country! “We need to understand that we need to accept people for who they are and what they look like,” Mrs. Elchamaa quoted.

She says, “War is not the key for solving problems.” She thinks of war as lots of bloodshed, sacrifice, and horror. Whenever someone says Remembrance Day she thinks of the innocent people who die because of war. What do you think of when somebody says the word Remembrance Day?

Flanders Field

Flanders Field

By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place: and in the sky

The larks still bravely singing fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved: and now we lie

In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe

To you, from failing hands, we throw

The torch: be yours to hold it high

If ye break faith with us who die,

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields

Handball or Tchoukball

by: I.Kiani

Calgary, AB For awhile now Ms.Forster and Mr.Elladen have been teaching Handball in gym, but that’s okay because lots of students have enjoyed playing it. Handball is a fun game and it requires many skills such as finding open space, and communication. Lots of students are learning how to communicate in a much better way. Handball can become a great game if you try your best and always focus on what you are doing. Recently, in gym, students were playing Tchoukball. Tchoukball is similar to Handball but there is some difference. The main one is that we can’t steal the ball in Tchoukball. Tchoukball requires almost all the same skills as Handball, but there are some skills that Tchoukball teaches that you don’t learn in handball. Those include: passing and catching. “I think everyone is always willing to shoot the ball at the target in Tchoukball,” exclaimed Ashwaq A. Well it sure looks like Ashwaq likes to shoot the ball at the target! Some students including Zehra and Riva prefer

handball more than Tchoukball because in handball you can steal the ball. Other students would rather play Tchoukball because you can’t steal the ball.

“I enjoy Tchoukball because no one can steal the ball from me, therefore I won’t have to worry about someone stealing it,” Sadia explains. This is one reason why many people enjoy Tchoukball.

Many students enjoy playing Handball and Tchoukball in gym. Ms.Forster and Mr.Elladen also loved teaching this fun sport. These two sports may be the most enjoyed games at Almadina.

Fun Experiences in Wrestling

by: Z.Zaidi

Calgary, AB It looks like the panthers are a fan of wrestling. Ms.Forster and Mr.Elladen enjoy teaching wrestling and there are some basic moves that students are learning. It’s a great time for students to learn wrestling at this age. Wrestling is an amazing game which gives students the time to learn new skills. Before you start to wrestle, you need to know the starting position which is: stand low, knees bent, and arms tucked in. It’s a great way to start, because it will help you a lot during the game. “Some students loved this unit a lot. Therefore, when they grow up they really want to be a great Wrestler,” Rafa explained. “People who are a great at sports will become a magnificent role model in the future!” she added. Perseverance is essential in wrestling. It will help you in your everyday life. Let’s see what Muntaha thinks about wrestling. “I think that perseverance is important because you should never give up on

achieve. You should always remember that anyone can do anything. Nothing is impossible!”

Sadia mentioned, “If you fear in anything, you can never do it.” She commemorates this quote every time she does something new, or starts something new and it is something she will always remember.

Because of Ms.Forster and Mr. Elladen’s encouragement and because of their time they use to help us, we couldn’t have learnt this enjoyable sport. Everyone loves to wrestle especially with their friends and to those who have not had a chance to wrestle, they will see the fun in wrestling very soon.
