I remember Niran Malaolu. He immediately came to mind

uncanny resemblance to the Madiba, complete with the centre-parting in his hair. Just like the Madiba, Niran was born in July; a young man with integrity and self-effacing respect. He rarely wavered in his conviction and was quick to say goodbye to anything that would lead him to compromise his stance.

Through him, I became an apostle of Nelson Mandela. I remember asking him a few times about the centre-parting, a style that was out of place in the 80s. The Mandela hair-cut

wore it proudly, in spite of the fact that it was so out of fashion. When Niran left Vanguard, a rising star left; paving way for

many of varying qualities of stardom.

years. I wonder if he ended his protest and like Mr. Mandela, closed up the centre-parting in his hair.

And, the Man died. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

Hello my dear readers, coconut water is said to be the magical drink! I was a bit skeptical about this so I decided to try it out myself. I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy such a refreshing drink it irked my curiosity so much I immediately started researching

plethora of information which I will be sharing with you today.

Not to be confused with coconut milk (which is a concoction of coconut water and freshly grated coconut), coconut water is all-natural, clear, sweet liquid with a nutty taste, it’s found inside young, green coconuts. Fresh coconut water has not been pasteurized, therefore it contains enzymes that help to detoxify and repair the body.

Devotees of coconut water frequently praise its ability to keep the body well-

about potassium (it contains more than a banana) and its naturally occurring electrolytes, necessary for proper hydration. Electrolytes are also necessary for proper muscle contraction and to generate energy in

COCONUT WATER - THE TASTY MIRACLE DRINK!!

TERI SpeaksHi Teri,

What do you suggest would be the best cure or care for itchy dermatitis. Also for red eyes. Helary

Dear Helary, It really depends on the state of itchy dermatitis. I would suggest natural remedy to begin with, locally called

1. The fat content in coconut water is extremely low, so generous quantities can be consumed without the fear of immediately packing on the pounds. It also suppresses the appetite and makes you feel full because of its rich nature.

2. PICTURE-PERFECT SKIN For those with acne or other blemishes on the surface of the skin, topical application of coconut water can go a great distance as it has the ability to clear up and subsequently tone the skin. It also moisturizes the skin from within if ingested orally and eliminates large amounts of oil. This explains why products such as facial creams, shampoos, conditioners and lotions that contain traces of coconut extract are more e ecti e.

3. Next time you o erdo it and drink more than your belly can handle, consume coconut water to settle your stomach. It will also replace those essential electrolytes that exit the body if you experience bouts of frequent urination and

omiting.

If you constantly

BENEFITS OF COCONUT WATER TO

encounter di culty during the digestion process, coconut water may pro ide a source of relief. ecause of its high concentration of ber, it aids in the pre ention of indigestion and reduces the occurrence of acid re ux.

The ingredients in coconut water are way more e ecti e at hydrating the human body than those of sports and energy drinks. During rigorous exercise or extended periods of physical acti ity, the human body loses mineral rich uids. Howe er, coconut water ser es as an excellent replacement medium with 294 mg of potassium and 5 mg of natural sugar per glass, unlike your fa orite sports drink that only contains half of the potassium content and e times the amount of processed sugar. In addition, the sodium count is only 25 mg, which is relati ely low compared to the 41 and 20 mg found in sports drinks and energy drinks respecti ely.

6. In many instances, a disproportionate le el of electrolytes can result in high blood pressure. ecause coconut water contains an adequate supply of each, it can be used as a balancing mechanism. Doctors recommended that coconut water be consumed at the start of each day to foster the balance of these electrolytes, this I must say is a tried and tested recommendation that I can testify to.

7. RICH IN NUTRIENTS nlike any other be erage on the market, coconut water contains e essential electrolytes that are present in the human body. These include: calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and sodium. ecause of its unique composition, coconut water can be en oyed by indi iduals with arying medical conditions.

8. Since it is isotonic to human plasma, coconut water can be used in extreme emergencies to quickly rehydrate the human body if administered intra enously. It is not uncommon for the drink to be used to sa e human li es in countries were saline water was di cult to come by.

When searching for the perfect fresh coconut to enjoy, be sure to steer clear of those that have a hard brown shell as this is an indication that it is mature. Instead, look for those that are young and green on the exterior as they usually contain a large supply of the actual coconut water substance. To test it out, simply shake the coconut up and down to gauge how much liquid it contains. Happy drinking!!

tropics, places like Nigeria, Brazil and India, where palm trees thrive and locals have been drinking the fresh clear water from young coconuts for ages, dubbing it “miracle water.” It must be duly noted that if you medically need to restrict your potassium intake, avoid coconut water.

‘Ori’ widely known as shea butter concentrate. Best to put it on at night immediately after a shower. If your dermatitis is particularly bad on the soles of your feet, you can sleep with socks after rubbing the Ori on them they act as a steam cap retaining moisture from your body heat. Try that for a few weeks and revert on the progress. With regards to red eyes stay tuned to the column for a full edition on this. (Wink!)Best wishes,. Best wishes, Teri M.

KIDSI recently attended a family function where all the kids received

monetary gifts. Immediately, my kids gave me the money they received to deposit in their piggy bank. By the following day, some of the other kids had used all their money to buy sweets and drinks from the corner store down the road. I introduced the concept of a piggy bank to my kids from a very early age and as a result, whenever they receive monetary gifts, they always insist I deposit it in the piggy bank. Not once do I recall my kids asking me to give them their money to buy sweets or toys. On the ip side, I nd that a lot of kids do the reverse. ithout guidance, these kids may grow up with a habit of spending all they have and not knowing how to save or invest. At what age should parents start teaching their kids about

Personally, I feel it is never too early to start teaching children about money. Once kids are able to talk, it is important to start introducing the concept of money, the value of money, how to manage money, how to make money as well as the importance of investing money.

Unfortunately, many of us were not taught by our parents and today we nd ourselves in nancially detrimental circumstances such as debt overload. urthermore, nancial intelligence is not taught in schools.

The Bible says “train a child in the way he/she should go and he would not depart from it.’ If we start teaching our kids from a very early age, it would become a lifestyle and they would grow up to be successful in handling money.

There are a lot of resources available to us as parents of this present generation. The internet provides access to unlimited resources and information regarding nancial intelligence. It is important that parents read books and speak to e perts in the eld such as nancial coaches. As part of family time, parents should also encourage their children to play games that teach nancial intelligence such as monopoly. There are also movies on nancial intelligence and nancial intelligence clubs.

ABUJA CAME ALIVE FOR MTN’S ‘LOUD IN NAIJA’

THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCIETY (IWS) HOLDS 56TH ANNUAL FUND RAISING LUNCHEON

With the addition of popular R&B singer, Bankole Wellington, a.k.a. Banky W, to its list of star artistes on tour of Nigerian cities, MTN spiced up its musical concert tagged ‘Loud in Naija’ in the capital city of Abuja last weekend. The concert was another milestone in the annals of youth engagement as a hitherto sedate and seemingly indifferent Abuja population turned out in droves to get entertained and refreshed; twitting endlessly on social media about the event, thereby making the concert ‘trendy’ all-night.

Remarkably, it turned out to be a worthy time spent outdoors. The combination of Banky W, Davido, D’Prince, Dr. Sid, Chidinma, Praize, iMike and many others put up their best performances so far. Their showmanship was exceptional. Their stage presence was masterful as well. These endeared the audience to each performance and they greeted every appearance with roaring applause.

On November 12, 2013 at the Shell Hall of Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, the president of International Women’s Society (IWS), Mrs. Grace Kalango, executives and honourary members of the organization welcomed guests to its 56th annual fund raising luncheon with the theme: ‘Harnessing the Leaders of Tomorrow’. The event was attended by well-meaning and generous dignitaries including Nkiru Anumudu, Ekuah Abudu, Ruth Osime, Derin Agbaje, Ego Boyo, Grace Osime, Eunice Ebie, Olori Oluwakemi Adetuna, Ugonna Madueke, Chima Anyaso and many others.

Highlights of the event were performances from award-winning singer, Bez, and comedian, Tee-A. There was also a raffle draw and auction session during which guests had opportunity to win or bid for interesting items including a dress from Nigerian-luxury brand, Ella & Gabby, in order to raise money for IWS projects.

MICROSOFT NIGERIA & THE FUTURE PROJECT LAUNCH AIKI NIGERIA

Microsoft Nigeria and The Future Project held a media and VIP event recently, at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos to officially unveil Aiki Nigeria – an employability programme that seeks to provide a platform where young people can build networks and connect for development at a continental level.

The strictly by IV event was hosted by Nigerian comedian Owen Gee and popular OAP Toke Makinwa.

In his opening speech, the Director of Youth Enablement, Microsoft 4Afrika, Patrick Onwumere explained that “Aiki.ng is an employability portal that is set to actively engage Africa in economic development.” He also stressed that “the project which stands for “Innovation, World Class Skills and Access” promises to provide 100,000 jobs for youth.”

Adebola Williams, the founding partner of The Future Project in his address to the VIP guests and media friends disclosed that “Aiki is an Hausa word for “Work”. In other words, Aiki Nigeria is simply, “Nigeria works”.” According to him, “Aiki Nigeria is a project that has been mapped out to empower young people to liberate themselves from the shackles of unemployment. He also revealed that the official website, www.aiki.ng will be launched in December and their target is to hit over 100,000 visitors on its first day of release.

On Sunday, 17 November, friends, associates and admirers of the late lady of song, Christ Essien Igbokwe came together at Intercontinental Hotel Lagos to celebrate her heart, art and style

The highlight of the event was the launch of her anticipated last album, ‘All of a sudden’, due for release just before she passed. It also featured the re-launch of her foundation, which was focused on her passion for children.

It was called the ‘Essential Childcare Foundation’, but to preserve her legacy, the family is naming it ‘The Christy Essien Igbokwe Foundation’.
