CREATE HOMEWORK

KITS

*Purchase items needed to stock homework kits

A helpful thing to have when doing homework is your own set of "tools." While a carpenter has a tool belt, a student will be served just as well with a homework kit. Ask your parents to help you make one, and you will be on the way to better homework skills. 1. You can use a wide variety of things for the container. A shoe box, small tote bag, a big zippered pouch, a plastic hinged school box. If you're crafty, with your parent's help, you could even sew a small drawstring bag for your kit. Remember, the kit is yours. You want to be happy when you use it. Decorate it with stickers or other items. Put your name on it. Be proud of how it looks. 2. The next thing is to fill it with items that you need in order to do your homework. Here is a list of things you might put in the kit. You probably won't need all of them, so pick and choose which ones will work best

Page | 7

Page 8: Allowable Items for Purchase with Parental Involvement Fundsebrschools.org/docs/Federal Programs/Allowable Items for Purchase... · A Sampling of Allowable Items for Purchase with

for you.

• Pencil/crayon sharpener • Black or blue pens • Red pen • Ruler • Pair of scissors • Scratch paper • Ruled notebook paper • Regular notebook • Box of Crayons • Markers • Colored Pencils • White-Out • Post-It Notes • Highlighter marker • Small bottle of white glue • Glue stick • Paper clips • Small stapler • Staple remover • Roll of tape • Calculator • Rubber bands • 1 small notebook (for notes) • Planner (if you're older children,

this will give you a head start on organizational skills)

3. The key to making the homework kit work is that you use it just for homework. If your mom needs a pair of scissors to cut the tag off a new dress, don't run to your kit. You want to make sure that all your supplies are handy when you need them. This also means putting the box in a safe place where your younger brothers and sisters can't get it. If you have a safe drawer or chest, you could store it there. Have your mom or dad put it on top of the refrigerator. 4. The last step is the most important. USE YOUR HOMEWORK KIT! Even if you only need a pencil to do your assignment, get your kit out and use the one inside. You want to make sure you get used to using the kit. After a while, you will really like having it and will find yourself wanting to use it more and more. With the right tools at your fingertips, you can get the job (your homework) done!

Like this idea? You can make kits for other activities you normally do. Make an art kit

with all the items you need to create a masterpiece on a rainy day. Do you have a pen pal? Create a letter writing kit with special paper, pens, envelopes, and stamps. Want to make choretime a little more fun, make a cleaning kit! Get a bucket and fill it with sponges, rags, dusters, and other items you use when cleaning the house. Be creative!

The Summer Skills™ books are three different series of review books (math, language arts and foreign language) for students from pre-k through high school. Each grade level book helps students maintain their academic skills over the summer months. Since their introduction over 21 years ago, our books have benefited millions of students in over 15,000 schools nationwide.

Requiring only 20 minutes per day, 3 times per week for ten weeks means kids will actually do them.

Their single-subject focus reinforces important subject matter while pinpointing areas of weakness.

The mixed-skills concept ensures that a variety of concepts is reviewed in each lesson.

They include all answers for immediate feedback.

Our books meet or exceed all state and National Standards.

The books focus on subject matter, not games or busy work.

They are affordably priced from $13 to $20 (see pricing information for parents and schools).

The OnCourse Lesson Planner is a 100% web-based program that will streamline and modernize the planning process at your school district. Teachers use intuitive tools to build plans and align them to standards, supportive resources, and homework assignments. Plans can be posted to administrators with a single click, or shared with colleagues using collaborative tools.

Teachers can create a multimedia classroom website, where students and parents can access homework, resources, and information that posts automatically from the teacher’s Lesson Planner.

Administrators can use the Lesson Planner Reviewer at a desk or on a mobile device for evaluating lesson plans and sending narrative feedback.

Students & Guardians

Students and guardians can access the OnCourse Homework Portal to retrieve their daily assignments and teacher websites.

In this area, students may also access a teacher’s events calendar, which might keep information like upcoming due dates, tests, or projects.

If the teacher has posted resources like study guides, handouts, or worksheets, these can be downloaded from the teacher website.
