Para-Taekwondo Eight year old Ashton has cerebral palsy, a right dystonic hemiplegia, and has been having physiotherapy since he was born. With lots of hard work from his parents he began to be able to use his right arm more freely, and learnt to walk with some control over his right leg. He has kept active but also done lots of stretching, used an ankle splint, had botulinum toxin and plaster casts, and worked on his swimming and running skills, including football (soccer).

But Ashton still had lots of difficulty hopping and balancing on his right leg.

Only six months ago Ashton took up Taekwondo, and loves it! He moved from attending once a week to three times a week. Last week Ashton amazed his physiotherapist when he unexpectedly hopped over 25 metres on EITHER leg! His quick step sideways is now better on his right side! His balance on 1 leg to kick is stronger on his right side!

Taekwondo was introduced as a full member of the International Paralympic Committee in 2015, and the World Taekwondo Federation began developing the kyorugi (sparring) discipline for para-athletes in 2005. Since 2013, poomsae has been developed as a competition format for athletes with all forms of impairments. In the Paralympics, athletes will compete in kyorugi (limb impairments and athletes with an arm amputation).

Ashton has an eligible condition for Para-Taekwondo and one day could compete in poomsae. He may also be able to compete in kyorugi .

Keep up the great work Ashton. Para-Taekwondo is for you!

ASCIA Anaphylaxis Action Plan Revisions Anaphylaxis is a potentially life threatening, severe allergic reaction. It should always be treated as a medical emergency, requiring immediate treatment with adrenaline (epinephrine).

Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) Action Plans for Anaphylaxis provide instructions for first aid treatment of anaphylaxis, to be delivered by people without any special medical training nor equipment, apart from access to an adrenaline autoinjector. All patients who have been prescribed an adrenaline autoinjector should also be provided with an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis (personal).

ASCIA have released revised instructions for EpiPen® and EpiPen® Jr adrenaline (epinephrine) autoinjectors in the 2017 versions of ASCIA Action Plans for Anaphylaxis. The revised instructions include the following changes:

Reduced injection time from 10 to 3 seconds – this is based on research confirming efficacy and delivery of adrenaline through the 3 second delivery.

Removal of the massage step after the injection – this has been found to reduce the risk of tissue irritation.

ASCIA advises that the older versions (prior to 2015) of ASCIA Action Plans should no longer be used. To access the 3 second EpiPen® training video, updated ASCIA Action Plans for Anaphylaxis and other resources go to www.allergy.org.au/anaphylaxis.

International Society of Prosthetics & Orthotics (ISPO) World Congress 2017 The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) limb clinic teams from Randwick and Westmead presented at the recent International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) World Congress held in Cape Town, South Africa 8-11 May, 2017. This Congress is held every two years and is an opportunity for professionals involved in the care of persons in need of prosthetic, orthotic, mobility and assistive devices to come together to learn about the latest scientific and clinical advances, products, innovative technologies, designs and materials in prosthetic and orthotic care. It is a unique opportunity for continued development through discussion and exchange between teachers, clinicians, researchers, technicians, manufacturers, doctors, therapists and health-care decision makers.

The research presented at this Congress demonstrated the need for multidisciplinary participation in prosthetics and orthotics care and research which is a founding principle of ISPO.

Facilitated and lead by Dr Adrienne Epps, we showcased the work of both limb clinics in the SCHN. Our symposium session was titled “Management and outcomes for children with congenital and acquired limb loss”. The presenters were occupational therapists Nadia Vigner and Kathryn Asher, physiotherapists Elle Morris and Margaret Patterson, and rehabilitation consultant Dr Louise Tofts. Nadia and Kathryn presented qualitative data on the sport and recreation terminal device loan pool and outcome measure use. Margaret and Louise presented the initial results from the Paediatric High Activity Feet Trial which was sponsored by Enable NSW.

The final presentation was the study by Joshua Pate, physiotherapist, titled “Longitudinal Fibular Deficiency: A comparison of the quality of life and lower limb function of children and adolescents to typically developing populations of the same age and gender” which was presented by Elle Morris. Elle will now continue the work initiated by Josh with a new study titled “Changes in Physical Performance of Young Persons with Longitudinal Fibular Deficiency (LFD) over a three year period”. This will be a collaborative study over both sites.

DonateLife Week This DonateLife Week (Sunday 30 July - Sunday 6 August 2017) all Australians are invited to make their decision count by joining the Australian Organ Donor Register.

Each year the lives of hundreds of Australians including children are saved through the generosity of living and deceased organ and tissue donors and their families that agreed to donation. Children make up approximately 2% of the Organ Transplant waiting list in Australia. Last year, the Paediatric Liver Transplant Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, NSW, performed a record breaking 26 paediatric liver transplants, transforming the lives of these children and their families.

If you’d say yes to a life-saving transplant...have you said yes to become an Organ and Tissue donor? Have the chat that saves lives! Visit donatelife.gov.au for info about becoming an organ and tissue donor.

Weight management resources for health professionals

Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Health Professional Training Manual - Weight Management

The weight management team at CHW are producing an education and training package for health professionals to use to run parental group education and workshops. The package is aimed at parents whose children are aged 2-14 years and are well above the healthy weight category. All information, from handouts to PowerPoint presentations, including the detailed structure that you will need to conduct the workshops will be given to you on USB.

Objectives of the Training Manual

To help participants move to a family-wide healthy lifestyle

To engage the parents together with their children in healthy lifestyle behaviours

To supply the materials for health clinicians to provide an education program to families.

This program is designed to be the beginning of the education process, followed up by individual health appointments for the parents and children.

The weight management service has been conducting these parental groups for over ten years for parents and carers of children/adolescents with positive evaluations and results. The training package is designed for training parent groups over weekly intervals, and covers medical, dietary, physical and behavioural lifestyle changes.

Who can present this material?

Treating overweight and obesity is a truly multi-disciplinary field. Of course, it is better if each topic is presented by a health professional with expertise and training in that area. Specifically, a dietitan, clinical psychologist, physiotherapist or exercise physiologist for those modules and the medical content is best presented by a doctor or a registered nurse.

Let us know what you think

Now you have heard the purpose and scope of this training package let us know your thoughts by filling in a very quick survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NJXTGGP.

ANZAHPE Conference 2017

Last month, I attended the Australian & New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) 2017 Conference, which was held in Adelaide, South Australia. ANZAHPE (pronounced affectionately as "anza-pee") is the peak organisation for practitioners involved in the education and training of health professionals in Australia and New Zealand. Members comprised clinicians, academic educators and students, and supports and advances education in the health care professions.

The theme of the meeting was Transitions and was open to multiple interpretations. Transitions asked us to consider where we have been, where we are and where we are going in our personal, professional and organisational learning journeys.

Delegates and presenters attended from many different professions and workplace settings from across Australia, New Zealand and beyond. The concurrent session presentations related to array of topics, including professionalism dilemmas in interprofessional practice, transitions to rural practice, and using film to foster reflection.

Jenny presented a poster on behalf of the Children’s Healthcare Network Allied Health Educators, titled “Allied Health Guideline development: reflections on an elephant pregnancy”. The presentation reflected on the experiences of allied health clinical practice guideline development and identified key issues for consideration and future application.

Details regarding initiatives and research presented at the conference will be included in future editions of the Allied to Kids newsletter.

For further details regarding ANZAHPE go to: https://www.anzahpe.org/

The Western NSW LHD Kids & Families Strategies Integrated Violence Prevention Team is hosting a range of workshops provided by the Education Centre Against Violence (ECAV) throughout 2017 in Orange and Dubbo.

It was identified as highly important that access to high quality, specialist, training be available to our LHD staff locally; negating the need for travel to a major city for the opportunity. The range of training opportunities offer clinicians skill and theoretical development and enhanced practice improvement within a trauma informed framework.
