EngineeringThe maximum recommended height of your Alliance Brick wall will be deter-mined by the Starter Ledge or angle iron connection. Use the following tableto determine the maximum height for your Alliance Brick application. Consulta structural engineer if you desire to build higher than the maximum heightsindicated below.

MAX. HEIGHT, WITH SILL BLOCK = 14'
* Starter Ledge anchorage requirements should be coordinated with the construction contractor. Alliance Brick's design charts are for preliminary use only. A final site specific design should be evaluatedand approved by a qualified professional engineer.
Construction Considerations
Alliance Brick can be installed ontoPlywood, Paneling, Wall Sheathing, andConcrete Board.
Prior to installing your Alliance Brick onan existing structure, remove existingsiding and make sure the existing wall isplumb and in good condition. Wallboards with dry rot should be replacedbefore installing Alliance Brick.
For renovation projects, you will need tohave a qualified professional modifyexterior lighting, outlets, electrical boxes, hose outlets and other plumbing so theyextend 4-3/8" past the face of the wall. You may also need to modify downspoutsso they don’t conflict with the position ofthe wall face.
Always cover your exterior wall with aweather resistant house wrap beforeinstalling Alliance Brick.
Header ReinforcementAbove Openings
Installing Alliance Brick above windowand door openings requiresreinforcement with a 4" Starter Ledgethat overlaps the sides of the opening bya minimum of 4 inches on each side. Thisis necessary to disperse the weight of thewall above the opening. The 4" StarterLedge needs to be fastened to theheader.
Important: Installing Alliance Brick overlarge openings requires specialreinforcement considerations. Alwaysconsult with a qualified structural engineerwhen building such critical wall applicationswhere wall weight and reinforcement are ofconcern.
Brick Coursing
Alliance Brick has the same appearance astraditional brick masonry. Therefore, it isimportant to install your wall so a runningbond (staggered) appearance ismaintained during construction. It isrecommended that you begin installationfrom an outside corner and install incourses. For doors, windows, or otheropenings, Alliance Brick can be saw-cut orsplit to fit the opening.

Step 1 - Install the StarterLedge
Alliance Brick needs a level concrete brickledge, a 4" x 3" angle iron, or a 4' StarterLedge. The Starter Ledge is predrilled onthe 3" side of the steel angle. Whenproperly installed and level, the first courseof Alliance Brick sits on the brick ledge or4" Starter Ledge. If you are using a genericsteel angle, it must be a minimum of 4"deep by 3" high by .25" thick. Attach theStarter Ledge 6" from top of slab/stemwall. Use 1/2" dia. x 3" long concreteanchors at 8" to 16" on center.
Step 2 - Install the FirstCourse
Lay the first course of Alliance Brick withthe Key of the brick facing up. (See page8 when construction involves inside oroutside corners.) Check for level. If notperfectly level, the brick may be shimmedor a small about of mortar may be appliedon the ledge. Prior or adding successivecourses, the top of each Alliance Brickneeds to be clean and free of foreignmaterial. Using a whisk broom, sweep alldebris from every course.
Note: When applying mortar on the brickledge or Starter Ledge, the second courseneeds to be placed and tied before themortar sets to assure that adjustments canbe made.
Step 3 - Additional Courses
As you continue to build your AllianceBrick wall, the second course needs to beinstalled with the Alliance Brick Tie oneach brick. The Tie fits in the top Channelof each brick and is screwed to theexterior wall with a standard 1-1/4" hexhead screw. After the second course, thisprocess will need to be repeated everythird course, by placing a tie on each brickof that course and fastening securely.
After each course, carefully check for leveland make adjustments as necessary.
For added rigidity, you may apply a smallbead of Super-Stik adhesive to the top ofeach brick on un-tied courses. Placeadhesive towards the back of the brick tokeep any excess from escaping throughthe front.

Step 4 - Successive Courses
Always build Alliance Brick in completecourses and carefully check and adjust forlevel.
The Alliance Brick Tie is NOT used onevery course. The first course does notneed a Tie. The second course and everythird course above it (as well as the toptwo courses) will need to be fastened tothe wall with a Tie on each brick.
Use a 1-1/4" Standard Screw with 1/4"Hex head drive or 1-1/4" Post FrameScrew to attach each Alliance Brick Tie.
Note: If you have an area on the wall thatbegins to grow, it may be the result of a topcourse(s) not being clean and/or an AllianceBrick Tie(s) that is not properly locking withthe Key Channel. Clean off debris and/orforce the Tie(s) to conform to the Channelusing a dead blow hammer.
Step 5 - Finishing Your TopCourses
When you reach the top of your wall, usethe Alliance Brick Tie on the top twocourses. Saw the Key off the top courseto accommodate a sill, flashing or soffit.
Wainscot Installation Option: Before adhering the top course of Bricks, make sure all the Keys have beencompletely removed. Install the AllianceBrick Sill Block or other sill material usingSuper-Stik adhesive. See pg. 16 forbuilding considerations.
Soffit Installation Option:To build Alliance Brick with an existingsoffit, install full bricks as high as possible. It may be necessary to cut Alliance Brickto fit under the existing soffit and adherein place with Super-Stik.
Note: When installing Alliance Brick, all cutand/or split bricks should be adhered inplace with Super-Stik or other high qualityconcrete masonry adhesives.

Alliance Brick Corners
With Alliance Brick, it is easy to makeinside and outside corners. It is best tostart your wall at a corner and workoutwards. This minimizes the visibility ofcut pieces that may appear in the wall. Allbrick corner units should be glued inplace with Super-Stik or other highquality concrete masonry adhesive.
90° Outside Corner (Rough/Split Face)Begin installation by placing arough/split brick at the corner. REFER TOPAGE 10 ON HOW TO CREATE CORNERBRICKS. Split 1-3/8" off the end of thebrick on the Key side. To ensure thecourse in the corner is level for the nextcourse of brick, saw cut the Key off thebrick so the unit is flush at the top. Aftermodifying the brick, position it in thecorner.
Next, saw cut a brick to be used on theadjacent wall. REFER TO PAGE 10 ONHOW TO CREATE CORNER BRICKS. Sawcut 1" off the side of the brick. It needs tobe placed flush with the brick that hasbeen split.
90° Outside Corner (Smooth Face)Begin installation by placing a saw-cutbrick at the corner. REFER TO PAGE 11ON HOW TO CREATE CORNER BRICKS.Split 3/8" off the end of the brickopposite the Key. To ensure the course inthe corner is level for the next course ofbrick, saw cut the Key off the brick so theunit is flush at the top. After modifyingthe brick, position it in the corner.
Next, place a standard Alliance Brick soit’s flush with the modified brick on theadjacent wall.
For each succeeding course, alternate thedirection of the brick to achieve a runningbond.
Note: Use plastic shims when necessary tokeep Alliance Brick units level.

FINISHING YOUR ALLIANCE BRICK WALL – SILL BLOCK AND FLASHING
Finishing with Alliance Brick
Sill BlockDepending on the application, it may be necessary to cut the top course ofAlliance Brick for the Sill Block to fit. Besure to saw cut all keys on the top of thebricks on the top course.
The top two courses of Alliance Brickneed to be tied to the exterior wall. In asoffit or similar application, you may notbe able to tie the top course to the wall.In this case, always secure the top coursewith concrete adhesive.
If using the Alliance Sill Block or any othertype of sill, apply Super-Stik or concreteadhesive to the top of the units. Whenapplying construction adhesive, alwaystry to place the adhesive toward thebackside of block. This will prevent excessglue from being visible on the face of thewall.
After installing the sill, flash and/or caulkto keep water from getting behind thesiding and brick.
Note: When using a product other than theAlliance Sill Block refer to that product’sinstallation guidelines.
FlashingFlashing is typically done with metal, wood, or vinyl material to cover exposedcourses and to protect water/moisturefrom getting into your home throughwindow and door openings.
When siding will be used above AllianceBrick, starter-strip flashing is neededwhere the bottom course of the sidingwill meet the Alliance Brick Sill Block.

Efflorescence, Cleaner & SealerAll cement products are susceptible to efflorescence or frosting. While we know how and why efflorescence occurs, it is nearlyimpossible to prevent it entirely.
When the cement, which contains lime, is mixed with sand, rock, and water and begins to harden, the free lime in thecement turns into calcium hydroxide. Although concreteproducts are solid, they contain millions of microscopic poresthat go from the surface down into the interior. As theconcrete starts to cure, water migrates to the surface throughthe pores, carrying with it calcium hydroxide. When thecalcium hydroxide comes into contact with air, a hard whitesubstance called efflorescence or frost is formed. This sticks tothe surface of the concrete. This will continue as long as theconcrete is curing.
Efflorescence will disappear, but it could take a few years. If thefrost is very obvious and detracts from your Alliance Brick, youcan remove it by using a standard masonry cleaner.
When using a masonry cleaner, follow the instructions given. After using the product, it is recommended to apply a concretesealer on the surface of the Alliance Brick to eliminate efflores-cence from occurring again.
Exterior ApplicationsMake sure the application of Alliance Brick products and thestructure it is being applied to incorporate good buildingpractices.
On exterior applications, the incorrect installation or absence offlashing, cant strips, gutters, and downspouts may result indiversion of water run-off onto finished surface areas. Masonryand other building products subjected to these conditions maydevelop staining, and when combined with severe freeze-thawconditions, may eventually suffer surface damage. The appli-cation of Alliance Brick veneer under these conditions is notrecommended.
RestrictionsUse Alliance Brick products only on buildings that meet currentlocal building codes where applicable. Building code require-ments vary. Check with local authorities for building coderequirements in your area. Carefully read all InstallationGuidelines before proceeding with your Alliance Brick appli-cation.
