Page 9: ALLENDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Absences

Students MUST attend school every day unless they are ill. Attendance is compulsory and every absence must be explained by written or verbal information from parents or caregivers. If a child is absent without explanation, a note will be sent home. MSM messages are sent out daily at 10am for any unexplained absences. Please advise your child’s teacher of any illness or injury that is likely to result in an absence of more than a few days. Kindergarten and Pre Primary students, once enrolled, need to attend every day and also need absences explained verbally or in writing. Schools are responsible for monitoring the attendance of students and must follow up unexplained absences. Schools must also monitor the frequency and number of absences, as these may cause concern even when the parent has provided an explanation. The Department’s policy states that the school must investigate a student’s attendance if it falls below 90% i.e. more that 5 absences per term. Accidents or Sickness Minor injuries or illnesses which occur during the day are normally attended to at school. In more serious situations every endeavour is made to contact a parent/caregiver or the emergency contact to arrange for the child to be collected from school. Should such contact be unable to be made, the school will act according to the best interests of the child, but no responsibility will be accepted for medical costs, i.e. Ambulance. In extreme emergencies the student may be taken to the hospital before the parents are notified.

Administration of Medication

The Education Department has established guidelines about the administration of medication to students. All schools are required to comply with these guidelines. The following conditions apply:

Wherever possible, parents are to come to the school to administer medications themselves.

If the parent is unable to come to the school to administer medication or when it is long term medication, then the parent/caregiver needs to complete two forms: (a) Request for Teachers to Administer Medication.

(b) Medical Instructions from the Prescribing Doctor.

All relevant forms are available from the office and we suggest that parents/caregivers obtain a copy of these before going to the doctor with a sick child.

Arrival at School Students should arrive at school between 8.30am and 8.45am. Supervision of students starts at 8.30am, so don’t arrive before this time. It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure your children arrive in time to prepare for the day and be settled before lessons start. Assemblies Assemblies occur fortnightly each term. Their main purpose is to acknowledge student achievement and to communicate information. Dates and times for assemblies are advertised in the school newsletter and term planner. Classes take turns to organise

Page 10: ALLENDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

and conduct these events, and to present an item. Parents and interested community members are always welcome at assemblies and are appreciated by students and staff.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

RATIONALE

At Allendale Primary School, a high standard of behaviour is expected of all students. Our behaviour management process is based on a school-wide positive behaviour framework. This ensures we are continuously improving and enhancing the impact of academic instruction on achievement and increasing proactive, positive and preventative management. Our behaviour management interventions and practices are evidence based and are used to effectively address and support the socially and educationally important behavioural needs of our students and their families.

AIMS At Allendale Primary School we believe that we can effectively teach appropriate behaviours to all children. Through the implementation of the Positive Behaviour Supports Framework and department endorsed practices we are endeavouring to enable students to take ownership/ responsibility for their behaviour, to consider others’ rights to safety, learning and fair treatment to enhance workable, positive relationships within our school community. Our behaviour management is based on the Positive Behaviour Supports framework which consists of rules, routines and physical arrangements that are developed and explicitly taught by school staff. Effective teachers provide inclusive, flexible and relevant curriculum to address both social and academic learning outcomes for students as set out in the Australian Curriculum. Our staff will consistently observe and acknowledge appropriate behaviours by using a variety of positive reinforcements with students recognised individually, at classroom level, through newsletters, during school assemblies and attendance at whole school activities such as Fun Friday’s.

APPROACHES USED TO DEVELOP POSITIVE STUDENT BEHAVIOUR Restorative Justice Restorative Justice refers to structured process designed to repair the harm and to teach and encourage more socially responsible behaviours after incidents such as bullying. Restorative justice examples include the formal apology, the method of shared concern, restitution and community conferencing.

Classroom Management Skills (CMS) Classroom management refers to the wide variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive during a class. When classroom-management strategies are executed effectively, teachers minimize the behaviours that impede learning for both individual students and groups of students, while maximizing the behaviours that facilitate or enhance learning. Further information is provided in the text: Classroom Management – A Thinking and Caring Approach by Barrie Bennett and Peter Smilanich Other strategies used at Allendale Primary School to promote and encourage positive student behaviours include:

Classroom Meetings

Year 6 Leadership Program

Token Program acknowledging Attendance, Uniform and Positive Behaviour

Communication Books between home and school

Individual classroom recognition strategies

Honour Certificates

Classroom reward

When challenging behaviour occurs:

What happened?

What were you thinking of at the time?

What have you thought about since?

Who has been affected by what you have done?

In what way have they been affected?

What do you think you need to do to make things right?

Bullying

Allendale Primary School community has a zero tolerance for bullying, harassing and violent behaviours. We believe that students and teachers must have a safe and friendly environment to perform to the best of their ability. To achieve this, it is our aim to make the school a bully-free environment.

Definitions

Bullying is the deliberate intention to harm someone who does not have the power to stop it. Bullying, harassment or any form of discrimination, is immoral and can be unlawful because it interferes with the right of a person to feel safe and valued as a member of a community.

Bullying takes many forms.

It can be:

Face-to-face such as fighting, pushing, taunting, insulting, embarrassing, intimidating and invading personal space

Behind-the-back such as writing threatening or offensive messages, sending distressing emails and writing anonymous notes that are hurtful.

Bullying contains the following elements:

Harm is intended;

There is an imbalance of power;

It is often organised and systematic;

It is repetitive, occurring over a period of time; or it is random but serial activity carried out by somebody who is feared for this behaviour; and

Hurt experienced by a victim of bullying can be external (physical) or internal (psychological).

Bullying can be either physical or non-physical:

Physical bullying can include biting, hair-pulling, hitting, kicking, and locking in a room, pinching, punching, pushing, scratching, spitting, or any other form of physical attack. It also includes damaging a person’s property. This category is also a form of Violence.

Non-physical bullying can be verbal, which includes abusive telephone calls, cyber-bullying (on-line and text messaging), extorting money or material possessions, intimidation or threats of physical violence, name-calling, racist remarks or teasing, sexually suggestive or abusive language, spiteful teasing or making cruel remarks, and spreading false and malicious rumours;

Non-physical bullying can also be non-verbal, which includes making rude gestures and mean faces; manipulating relationships and ruining friendships; purposely and often systematically ignoring, excluding, and isolating someone; and

Violence can be premeditated fighting, attacking someone with a weapon or any other range of physical assault not already covered in this document.

Violence is a conscious act of aggression by one or more people against another person or people. It is intended to cause physical harm to another person.

Page 15: ALLENDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

All members of the Allendale Primary School community will ensure a positive social context where student behaviour is developed. This is achieved by giving consistent messages that promote the value of respect, value diversity and support constructive relationships. Further steps that can be taken by staff to create this context include the following:

Provision of a relevant and engaging curriculum;

Weekly classroom meetings with teachers input and guidance;

Provide students with opportunities to develop their leadership skills;

Strong focus on pastoral care;

Emphasise the value of respect for all;

Accept and celebrate diversity;

Continue to foster the involvement of parents and the wider school community in the school’s programs.

At Allendale Primary we have commenced the implementation of the Friendly Schools Plus Program, which compliments the PATHs program that has been implemented since 2011. Both of these programs are designed to build capacity and resilience of our students through:

Self-Awareness

Self-Management

Social Awareness

Relationship Skills

Social Decision-Making. It is strongly recommended that they be chained and padlocked for safekeeping. Change of address and enrolment details

Parents are required to keep the school informed of any changes to address or caregiver’s phone numbers. This is essential to allow quick contact with parents in emergency situations.

Communication with classroom teachers Parents are encouraged to make direct contact with classroom teachers to deal with matters of concern. For quick matters, immediately before or after school are ideal times. For more involved matters, an interview time will need to be made with the teacher. Any parent wishing to discuss concerns with the School Executive regarding their child’s teacher will need to have addressed the concerns with the teacher first. Please keep the teacher informed of anything that may impact on the child’s emotional wellbeing at school. This allows the teacher to be proactive and support your child through difficult situations.

Page 17: ALLENDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Complaints and Concerns From time to time parents may encounter difficulties or concerns. When this occurs, parents are encouraged to endeavour to resolve the issue informally. No Smoking Zone Schools are no smoking zones. Please respect the Department of Education Policy and refrain from smoking. Dogs Dogs are not permitted on school grounds. They present a health and safety risk in the playground. Dogs create fear and tension for some students. Please support these students and help keep the school grounds clean by making Allendale Primary School a DOG FREE ZONE – even out of school hours. Duty Teachers Teachers are rostered on playground supervision before school and at all recess and lunch periods. These teachers are in the playground to watch over the welfare of the students and to take care of any difficulties which may arise. The students are expected to refer to the duty teachers when problems occur. Staff on duty wear bright fluorescence vests and are easily identified by students. Early pick-ups by Day Care are not permitted Parents and after school day care providers should not make arrangements for students to be picked up before the conclusion of school. Kindergarten through to Year 6 all finish at 3.00pm. Teachers are not permitted to release students early unless the parent or carer has obtained a leave pass from the office. Headlice Head lice have no respect for people. They can be found in all types of families, and usually infest the cleanest hair first. They are not a medical emergency, but are quick to spread from person to person. If not properly treated, head lice can become a serious nuisance in the community as they are passed from one person to another. Any place where people live or play close together is a good place for catching head lice. They like to live on human scalps where they feed, breed and lay their eggs. They feed on human blood and cause the owner to scratch his/her head.

Page 19: ALLENDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Treatment Effective lotions are available from any pharmacy. It is important that treatment is carried out in accordance with the instructions. All eggs should be removed from the hair to prevent reinfestation. All members of the family should be treated, even if only one member of the family is found to have head lice or nits.

Brushes, combs, hats, clothing, pillow cases and bedding should be washed thoroughly and put out to dry in the sun for several hours.

Oil and Hair conditioner treatment regimes are also effective to remove lice and eggs. The Child Health clinic or School Nurse can assist with detailed information about these methods.

Homework Homework is a valuable means of consolidating and reinforcing what has been taught in the class. In junior years it usually takes the form of daily oral reading or spelling. In middle and senior years children are required to complete more set homework. Parents are asked to assist whenever needed. Homework may not be provided on a regular basis, but may be included by the teacher whenever appropriate. Newsletters School newsletters are issued 3 – 4 times a term to the youngest child in each family. Please keep an eye out for the newsletter! It contains useful information about the school’s activities.

Parent/Teacher Meetings Parents are encouraged to discuss any concerns about their child’s progress with the class teacher. Parents wishing to meet with teachers are requested to make an appointment by sending a brief note with their child or by telephoning the school office and requesting an appointment. Parents and Citizens Association This is your association and deserves your support! Involvement in the P&C is one of the best ways of being aware of school activities and what is planned to improve the school environment for your child. There are many ways of supporting this organisation, however personal involvement is the one most appreciated. Meetings are held twice a term in week 3 and 7.

From time to time the P&C engages in fund raising and social activities, or arranges busy-bees at which parents can mix with and meet others. To date the association has been an active contributor to the school’s educational program and the development of school facilities. It is hoped that you will help maintain this support.

Parent Helpers The school has been fortunate to have a number of parent helpers who volunteer their services to particular class teachers or to the school generally in a number of subject and clerical areas. Parents with particular skills or who are interested in helping and have time available are asked to contact the Principal or any staff member who will be pleased to discuss this matter with them. Parent helpers are asked to wear an identifying badge whilst on school grounds provided by the class teacher. All visitors are required to sign in at the front office.

PEAC (Primary Extension and Challenge) Academically talented students have an opportunity to participate in the Gateway program in Years 5-6. Eligible students are identified by a test administered in Year 4. Generally speaking, about 4% of the student population qualify for inclusion in the program. The PEAC program is conducted at Beachlands Primary School. Parents are responsible for transporting participating children to and from Beachlands Primary School.

Picking students up during school hours

Students can only leave the school during lesson times for unavoidable appointments. Anyone picking a student up must sign them out at the office first and take an authorisation slip to the teacher. NO students can be released from class without this authorisation slip.

Physical Education Program

Our school is involved in a skills orientated, school wide physical education program. Emphasis is placed on enjoyment, participation and the development of skills and sportsmanship. Full participation is essential as the lessons are an integral part of the scheduled program. Parental support of these lessons is therefore greatly appreciated. Appropriate clothing (sports uniform) is required in order to allow free movement and evaporation of perspiration, with warm clothing able to be pulled on after the exercise.

The Allendale Primary School Board is made up of parents and staff who meet twice a term to formulate the school’s educational objectives and priorities. The aim is to make it possible for all members of the school community to share in making decisions about the school’s educational environment. In general terms, the Allendale Primary School Board:

- represents the educational needs and aspirations of students, teachers, parents and the community

- determines school priorities - assists in the formation of the School Development Plan - monitors the school’s learning outcomes - reviews the school’s priorities - monitors the allocation of resources (financial and human)

The School Board is essentially a decision making group. The school board effectively represents the wider community and has a leadership role in the accountability processes of the school.

School Psychologist This school has access to a School Psychologist through the Student Services team at the Midwest Education Office, whose duties include assisting teachers or parents to gain detailed analysis of a student’s ability or areas of weakness, as well as delving into social, emotional or other behavioural areas. A student’s teacher in consultation with the parents will recommend a referral to gain a clearer understanding of a student’s educational abilities where this is considered of considerable importance. Parent permission must be approved before a School Psychology Service Referral is requested. The school has access to a Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist. Referrals for speech therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy are made at the request of teachers with parent permission via the Learning Support (LSC) Co-ordinator to Midwest Allied Health Services.

Youth Care Allendale Primary School is fortunate to be funded under the National School Chaplaincy Program. The school has received funding for 2017 for a Youth Care Worker based at the school for 2 days per week.

Smoking Smoking is prohibited on Education Department property. Parents and visitors to the school are asked to abide by this regulation. Teachers and other employees of the school are also prohibited from smoking on school premises. Students found smoking on the school site risk immediate suspension from school. Stationery Requirement List The stationery requirement lists are in place at the end of the school year for the following year. Ziggies are our preferred supplier of the Stationery Requirement List at Allendale Primary School however parents can purchase from other suppliers. Most of the items on the list are required by students each day and need to be replenished every term. Please keep your child supplied with their essential equipment so they can quickly set about their work.

Transferring to other schools Please inform the office staff as soon as you know your child will be moving to another school. This allows all the necessary arrangements to be made for your child’s school materials to be sent to the new school.

Valuables at school Students are encouraged NOT to bring toys or valuable items to school. They must take full responsibility for valuable items they bring to school. Radios, mobile phones, cassette players, IPOD’s, trading cards and electronic games are not to be brought to school.
