It may mean that we, the students, might be left behind with atrocious parking and even less space that we already have, or that our school may have to move to a different campus! During the summer when students and staff of Daily High were at home, a meeting was held on July 12, 2017. At the meeting, it was announced that to fix the GUSD building would be an estimated cost of twenty million dollars.

The GUSD Board of Education says Daily will remain the same if not better, but the big question is where will our parking, the garden, bistro, apex, and photography classes go? The apex and photography classes will have to be moved into our current student parking lot. There is no plan for the Second Chance to Grow garden if we stay here and any plans for the bistro class remain to be discussed. What would we be built next to the school? An apartment building!

Demolishing the current GUSD building altogether and constructing a new one would cost about thirty million dollars. The new apartments would not help with student and staff parking. Being that we only have so much space, and parking is essential for both students and staff. We would need about forty parking spaces or more at all times. eighty parking spaces, two hundred and twenty four more than the one hundred and fifty six parking spaces we have now. On December 13, 2017 a meeting was held stating that the developers want to build a parking lot with six floors, two of which are

below ground level. They also want to get rid of the alley on Jackson to make it a continuous living space. As for Daily High School, there is talk about moving our campus to the old Edison campus on Pacific Avenue. We will have to wait and see.

Around Daily  Design with Ms. Goff By Lauryn Marcucci

We have professional artists at Daily High

School! Our design students have artwork that can be seen all around Glendale, from utility boxes to the Glendale Central Library. The design class, during 6th period, works with advanced art students to collaborate together and create murals. Over the course of the trimester, design creates at the most, two murals as long term projects. While taking this class, students experience what it is like working with clientele. Clients may call in and even meet with the students on the type of artwork they would like. After clients have made an order, the students themselves, come together with many ideas and construct a rough draft. One of the obstacles in this class is that if a client is not satisfied with the rough draft, students then have to go back to the drawing board and brainstorm again. When they have successfully met

the client's expectations the approved rough draft would then be transferred to a larger scaled poster. After measurements have been made, everything is

graphed and then students begin painting with acrylics. All of the design products come to fruition through the hard work and dedication of Ms. Emily Goff. Ms. Goff earned her teaching credential in San Francisco and her Bachelor degree in studio art at UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara). Before teaching, Ms. Goff had assisted with her first mural in 1980 at the Chicano Park, San Diego. This mural is known on the National Historic Registry. Ms. Goff’s design class has created other well-known murals that are open to the public at Marilyn Park and Maple Park. Outside of school Ms.

Goff has worked on private murals for her own customers. As part of committees with the city to make Glendale a beautiful community. Ms. Goff also spends time on evenings and weekends trying to get design clients. Design offers students the experience of what it is like to not only work with others but how to come together as a team, as well as demonstrate what it is like to work with clientele. Students are able to leave the school campus to go to other locations to set up murals. Going out into the public like this gives the students a sense of community. Another way the class offers community service is with muralist, Roger Dolin. Roger Dolin has been coming to Daily, after school for 11 years and has assisted on most mural installations. Roger has hired some students after graduation to work on murals because of the great training Daily High School has provided indDesign.

Model School By Sevada Ghazaryan and Darwin Rodriguez  On Tuesday November 28, 2017, you may have seen a couple

of men in suits walking around and observing the classes. Those men were Brian Stanley

Continued from page 5. and Justin Laurer who both work at continuation schools in other districts. Brian is a principal at Rose City Continuation High School which is part of the Pasadena Unified School District, Justin is also a principal but he works at New Mark Continuation High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

They came here to judge if Daily should continue being a model school. Not surprisingly, they were blown away by Daily’s outstanding features and behavior. They were impressed with the school’s wide variety of electives, caring and well involved faculty staff, and the wonderful behavior of the students. According to both Justin and Brian, “The benefits of being a model school is that it helps dispel myths of Daily being a correctional behavior school. Rhe title helps to reinforce Daily’s credibility.”

Daily has been a Model Continuation High School since 2003. According to Justin Lauer, “A model school’s instruction must be comparable, or better than a regular high school.” Brian Stanley also added that a Model Continuation High School “must have a strong student support system.” Although having the title of Model School might not faze many of the students who attend Daily, but to the people who work at Daily, being a part of a model school reassures them that they are not only excelling in their profession but, they are also greatly impacting the lives of they’re students in a positive way. Being part of a great model school like Daily should make all of us proud. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Lifestyle

Sneakers by Malachi Clausell The year 2018 is the year of the G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time)! New Jordan releases of 2018 have brought us back to the late 80’s and early 90’s of Michael Jordan's prime. For the last few years, the Jordan brand has released a number of shoes that have just sat on retail store shelves. For resellers worldwide, they’re looking for a shoe that

holds value and whose price will increase over the weeks, months, and years. The reason 2018 is “The Year of the G.O.A.T” is because of its marvelous releases that sneakerheads go crazy go for. One of these spectacular releases that sneakerheads and I have been waiting for is the NIKE Jordan 11 Concord (As pictured). The last time have we seen this iconic shoe re-released was nearly eleven years ago. There is no specific date but the suspected release will be somewhere near holiday season 2018. Jordan, the G.OA.T. himself debuted this shoe

during the 1995 Eastern Conference Finals against the Orlando Magic. Sneakerheads and shoe historians have been waiting for this shoe to drop and will love to rock it on their feet again real soon. The Black Cement 3 was debuted at the 1988 All Star Game, with Michael Jordan representing the East. The East won 138-133. Jordan himself had a 40 point game that night and was awarded All-Star MVP. Despite the the exhaustion of achievements on All-Star weekend, M.J. still found time to release The Black Cement 3. The shoe is very different, with elephant print on the toe and heel mudguards. The O.G. version had a Nike Air banding on the heel. Sneakerheads who know M.J.’s legacy know how dope the Nike Air banding is on the shoe. Shoe addicts are patiently waiting for this shoe. The shoe drops February, 18th 2018.

A Musician At  Daily by Darwin

Rodriguez

As teenagers, music is a very important part of our lives. We use music as a distraction from the problems we have within ourselves and the problems we have with the world around us. We also use music to help us stay focused and it help us through hardships in life. Many of us dream of becoming musicians in whatever genre of music that we love. One student at Daily is doing everything he can to make that dream come true. Alejandro Ortega is a 17 year-old senior who writes and sings his original music. He performs in front of private parties and large audiences. Alejandro began singing at the tender age of 4-years-old and began writing his own music at the age of 5. He sings norteñas and corridos, which are both Mexican genres of music and he writes rap songs for other artists. Alejandro began his journey in music very early in his life. When asked why, he stated “I just thought I had a good voice, and I have always liked music. Writing and singing music just makes me feel better.” His musical career is something that means a lot to him, “I work on my music everyday,” he stated. As teenagers, most of us know how hard is it to stay committed to a task, but he works on his music in order to make it the best it can be. He has learned to play the guitar, the 12-string guitar, the bass, the drums, and the accordion with help from his dad. He also learned how to play the piano, but he had to take lessons in order to learn. Although he enjoys practicing his craft and he loves music, he admits that, “The worst part [about being an artist] would be that I sometimes have to leave my family. For Christmas and the holidays, I have less time with my family because I have to perform.” Alejandro plays what is meaningful to him, not just what is popular. During our interview, he stated, “Some of my friends are rappers, but it does not bother me, because everyone has their own taste in music.” All in all, pursuing a career in music is a very difficult task. His advice for anyone who wants to being writing music or singing is, “Just practice everyday.” When asked if he believes he could make a living out of music, he stated, “I think I am going to make it.” Although he admitted that he must continue to put in a lot of effort because “It is really hard to make a career out of music.” ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Community Corner

A Place for Kids & Parents in Need By Jaime Monge

The poverty rate in the city of Glendale is approximately 14.6% or higher according to https://datausa.io/profile/geo/glendale-ca/, which means that 14.6% of the population in the city cannot provide themselves or their kids with basic living amenities. This program, known as “Glendale Healthy Kids” helps provide these unfortunate families with resources such as food, bus tokens, shopping cards, school supplies, discount coupons, and clothing that has been donated by the community and other organizations such as the Parent Teacher Association. Recently, I interviewed Ms. Diana Hill, Lead Case Manager of

the Healthy Start/Glendale Healthy Kids program, on the program's history, why it was made, and how parents and kids become eligible,

Continued from page 6. as well as why she personally joined this program. She told me “I have been working with this program for a good while and previously worked with child services.” The reason she joined GHK was provide aid to the people in need. GHK, which is currently run by Dr. Ilin Magran, has been around for 15 to 20 years and was previously located at multiple different school sites, but now is located on 223 North Jackson Street in the school district office, in rooms 101 and 102. GHK has received funds from Title One, private donations and from the state, as well as funding from the PTA. Families with little to no income, and children who are fostered or homeless can get the necessary aid they need. GHK also provides more than simple basic amenities to the children and families in their program. They aid in improving mental health by providing children with therapists that GHK specifically chooses from as early as the age of 4 all the way to 12th grade and even beyond if necessary. They also currently have a room filled with toys and food which will be given out to families in need on Christmas day. This program is one that is truly helping many unfortunate individuals of the community, and is a program that with more funding, will continue to help children and families for many more years to come.

ASB Happenings

We’ve Got Music!!! - Russell Munoz & Lauryn Marcucci Most students who attend Daily High School have experienced other campuses that have an abundance of activities during lunch and after school, ranging anywhere from music to celebrity basketball games. As Daily’s journalism class we decided to find out why our school is not as lively as other schools. After interviewing our ASB president Althea Lumagui, the ASB advisor Mrs. Alarcon, and our principal Mr. Eulmessekian we discovered that the lack of ASB activities and entertainment was due to a lack of students not having a platform to express their ideas to make better events and improve students attitude. Because we are journalists, we have been able to investigate and solve some of challenges at our school. Luckily, we were given the opportunity to finally provide something for the students to raise their spirits. With the support from Mr. Eulmessekian, we decided to take a poll to see if the student body wanted activities and music during lunch since so many of our students were

accustomed to the excitement that it brought to their previous schools. We wanted Daily to be comparable to the other high schools in the district and to improve the reputation and outlook among the students. As anticipated, the whopping majority of the students supported the option to liven up the school. On Monday, December 18, the journalism class decided to conduct an experiment by playing music in the quad for student and faculty with the hopes that ASB will soon take over the fun and that music will be a weekly occurrence at our school. The majority of students had positive responses and some wanted to add more songs to the list. The music playlist must be pre-approved and can not be changed on the spot. A music journal will be at the DJ booth for requests the next time music is played. All songs must have positive messages and to be non-explicit for it to be played in the courtyard. Mr. E is in the process of purchasing a new speaker system that will make the songs sound clear. The second part of our poll consisted of an idea for an entertaining event ASB can host, a talent show! Having a talent show gives students and teachers an opportunity to express their unique abilities. With events like this, we can have students learn more about each other and bring us closer together as a family. We hope that the actions our students have taken to provide our student body with the social aspects that every other school in our district already has will continue to make Daily a home for every Dragon!   Teacher Showcase

Wise Words From Mr. G

By Malachi Clausell

What does it take to become successful? What attributions must you carry? I sat down and conversed with Mr. Glusovich, discussing him and his upbringing. Mr. Glusovich is known to students as ‘Mr. G’, he was born in Santa Monica, California and then soon later moved to New York. Being raised in the heart of New York City, I asked Mr. G if the culture of city life impacted him him growing up and if he was still affected today? Mr. G, answered “Yes! Sometimes I walk too fast and talk too fast; It’s just a hustle mindset”. Besides New York making an impact on his life, he had some other influences in his life such as his parents. Words from his parents that have stayed with him since was the quotes by his father, “Business before pleasure” and another quote by his mother, “The show must go on”. These two ideologies helped him grow and prosper through the years of his youth, into adulthood. If it was not for his upbringing in New York City or his parents wise words, the successful Mr. G would not be the mentor his has become today. ______________________________________________________________________________

Opinion

Past and Present Feminism By Sevada Ghazaryan Feminism is a very controversial topic. Feminism is the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. Many people feel strongly either pro or anti-feminism. I think that feminism has changed over the recent years from what it used to be, which was equal rights for both men and women, to basically man-hating. Although man hating is extreme feminism it serves to shut-down men altogether. The idea of feminism must be clarified to instill equality for the sexes. Some of the ideas that extreme feminists are trying to explain are correct, but the way they present their arguments is ridiculous at times. There are many people that believe that feminists today are ignorant and just plain wrong. There are still feminists that hold true to the ideology of equality and there some extreme feminists who are changing the meaning of feminism into man hating. Nothing gets accomplished by putting down one group and elevating another.

One idea of feminism that I fully support is to always be confident how you look. Extreme feminists would somehow broadcast the idea of dressing provocatively making it ridiculous. For example, during protests, some extreme feminists would wear revealing clothes and explain that they are confident in their body. It is good that they don’t care about how others view their bodies, but overly revealing clothing borders public indecency. I understand that women like to wear clothing that makes them feel powerful and that allows them to express themselves. Men do too! Many men like to wear clothing that defines them as well. Overall, everyone wants clothing expresses who they are but noone has the right to be offensive.

Still, there are somethings that I do find surprising that some feminists complain

about, for example, when a male opens a door for them, helps pull their chair out or any other friendly gesture. Extreme feminists immediately criticize them and consider those acts as advances. Some extreme feminists are hypersensitive and just lash out at men for making simple advances if these men are interested. How is anyone supposed to meet new friends in this day and age? I understand that in some situations when a person continues making advances or the person’s advances are indecent that a new solution is required. I believe that it’s suitable to confront the person and tell them to stop.

In the end, it’s still too complicated for me to fully grasp the idea of feminism. It already took me some time to understand that there are two types of feminists. There are true feminists, who still honor the idea of equality and don’t abuse the title. And there are extreme feminists who do abuse the title and are trying to change the idea of feminism. After contemplating the topic of feminism, I have a new understanding of equality from both a male and female perspective. <>
