OUR MATE DON -The Diamond of the Scarp

On Friday 5th August, DON BARTLElost his fight for life after a shortillness. Don was a man who was wellknown in this district, born in Yarloopand went to school in the old WaroonaState School in Centenary Park. Donwas extremely well liked and wasalways the happiest with his sleevesrolled up, overalls and his boots on,working on machinery or equipment. His very best friends were his Axe, hisStihl Chainsaw and his trusty Toyotatruck that brought magic to his life andfulfilment that only he knew. His loyaltyto his family, friends and workcolleagues was outstanding and hisinbuilt ability to find the most elusive, obscure spring or washer wasamazing! Don was the consummatevolunteer with wide rangingconnections, throughout the Shire.Often called upon to qualify localknowledge, if he did not know theanswer, he soon found out through theextensive network of acquaintancesthat was known only to Don. He was adiamond from the Scarp that willsparkle for ever. The wind, the rain, the sun and stars, the forest, thegrass, the birds the fish, the beachand his greatest mate of all, the sea, will all remember Don and thecontribution he made for the wellbeingof our community and the comfort hebrought to country living. Rest inPeace ! Bill & Elizabeth Calcott.

November 2016 Page 11Staying Strong on Your Feet

If it’s true that‘laughter is thebest medicine’then thoseattending‘Strong onYour Feet’exerciseclasses should

have expectations of good health!David commences each session by‘dispensing a dose of (laughter)medicine,’ as he shares a joke orfunny anecdote. This sets the tone foran afternoon of fun and goodhumoured banter, making exercisinga pleasure and not a pain! This monthwe have asked Peer Leader Gail totell us about herself and why she is sopassionately committed to theprogramme. This is ‘her story!’ I ama volunteer for the SeniorsRecreation Council, Peel Branchand have been a Peer Leader forthe ‘Strong on Your Feet’programme for the past eighteenmonths. My husband and I had anOptical Dispensing Business inPerth from 1980 until we retiredand came to live in Mandurah threeyears ago. We have four childrenand 9.5 grandchildren! Two of ourdaughters and families live in thePeel Region so my life is lovely andbusy but I needed to connect with

my new community and withpeople of my age. I was a little lostuntil I saw an ad in the local paperasking for volunteers for aprogramme called ‘Strong on YourFeet,’ which I learned had beendesigned to help in the preventionof falls in older people. I wastrained by Mandurah CommunityHealth Physiotherapists and amre-assessed every six months. I doclasses in Waroona and Pinjarra. Itis light exercise, mostly donesitting or standing and holdingonto the back of a chair. Theexercises are designed to gentlystretch and strengthen muscles tohelp prevent falls - a major problemfor people over sixty. I love my roleand believe the exercises are agreat benefit in keeping us ‘strongon our feet’ and enabling us to stayactive for longer. We are so blessedyou volunteered Gail and we thankyou and David and other Leaders whofaithfully come to Waroona, eachweek. For further informationregarding ‘Strong on Your Feet’please contact Jan by phoning 95354749, mobile 0427 088 615 or [email protected] is almost here so rememberto bring your drink bottles!Stay strong, stay active and stayhappy! Blessings, Cheryl.

Just Do It!

The Power of BlessingThe Power of BlessingThere is ‘power inthe blessing’ of

JOY! In the last fewdecades the worldhas discovered

something that the Biblehas always revealed – ‘joy’ or‘joyfulness’ is a very powerful blessingthat promotes well-being in our spirits, souls and bodies! To have joy is tohave exuberance about life. It is verycontagious and will attract other joyfulpeople! How refreshing andencouraging it is to encounter peoplewho bubble over with joy!It mightsurprise that joy is not dependent onmaterial possessions, other people orperfect circumstances. Rather, it is achoice we make. That’s right – joy is achoice! We can choose to be joyful!Imagine how hard it would be tochoose to have joy and be joyful if youwere put in prison, not because ofanything you had done wrong but fortelling others what you believe. Wouldthere be joy if you were beaten upseveral times even to the point ofdeath or stoned - as in having rocks

SON and had the HOLY SPIRIT, hiscomforter and friend, living in him. This was the reason he ‘chose’ to befull of joy despite desperatecircumstances. Like Paul, we canchoose joy. We don’t need certainthings before there can be joy or haveto have a strong dependence onothers to provide joy. Neither do wehave to wait for something to happento bring happiness so that there canbe joy. In John 15:11 JESUSHIMSELF said ‘I have told you thisso that MY joy may be in you andthat your joy may be complete.’ HISjoy in us completes our joy. If joy islacking in your life why not askJESUS the ‘Joy Giver’ to come andlive in your heart and supply you withthe ‘everlasting joy’ thatcomes from being rightwith GOD. There is‘power in the blessing ofjoy’ so be blessed to bea joyful blessing!Every blessing,Cheryl Joy!

thrown at you with the intent to kill -three times? Could you be joyful if youwere in constant danger, chained upfor two years or forced to endurethirty-nine lashes on five differentoccasions? Would there be joy if youwere shipwrecked three times or inthe sea for a whole night and day? What if you went on journeys that putyou in danger of drowning, beingrobbed, going hungry and thirsty, enduring many hardships includingalmost freezing to death and all thewhile, having the responsibility foroverseeing many people? Wouldthere still be joy? Well, these are justsome of the circumstances a mannamed Paul endured with joy for thesake of the Gospel of JESUS. Talkabout ‘a cause to die for!’ Yet despitehardships, he wrote letters resoundingwith joy and urging others to be‘people of joy’ despite theircircumstances! What was the reasonfor his joy? Paul’s faith and trust wasfirmly anchored in the knowledge thathe was loved by GOD the FATHER,saved by grace through JESUS the

Recognising the limited capacity ofunwell and aged people to go out intothe community, the AlcoaSustainability Fund is helpingQuambie Park to improve the internalenvironment for Waroona’s residentialaged care residents. The AlcoaSustainability Fund generouslydonated $20,000 to install LEDlighting and non-slip flooring acrossthe residential aged care facility. Thelighting will improve visibility forpeople who are partly visuallyimpaired and the flooring will increasethe mobility of all residents. Theproject is part of a longer-term holisticapproach aimed at creating a physicalenvironment which is inviting tofamilies and friends and encouragessocial inclusion through interactivevisits. The project will result in three

distinct advantages for thecommunity:1. The well-being of aged residents withimpaired vision will improve with thesignificant additional lighting and non-slip flooring (reducing fall and triphazards).2. The installation of LED lighting andimproved flooring across thefacility will create a more invitingenvironment for family andfriends. This will increase socialinteraction opportunities forresidents.3. The economic savings toQuambie Park in energyefficiency through theinstallation of LED lighting willdirectly progress theorganisation's strategic intentionto become economically viable

in the longer-term. If Quambie Park wasnot able to realise this intention, thecommunity of Waroona would bewithout an aged care facility.Quambie Park and the aged people ofWaroona whole-heartedly thank theAlcoa Sustainability fund for theirgenerosity.

November 2016 Page 18WAROONA SHOW 2016

The 2016 Waroona Show hosted its wettest show insometime this year, however, despite the severeweather forecast still managed to attract just under10,000 visitors. Rain was intermittent throughout theday which allowed patrons the chance to enjoy themany features and attractions that the WaroonaShow had to offer. A cooler than expected springresulted in fewer entries in the hall exhibits withexhibitors finding it difficult to find flowers andvegetables for their creations. However, thosethat were able to find alternative materialscreated some magnificent entries and a walkthrough both the main hall and the children’shall showed much talent from our local

community. The log chops wereextremely popular along with the farrier’scompetition where the WA FarriersNational Championships were being held. The Walmlsey Pavilion was popular withmany local producers exhibiting their goodsalong with cooking demonstrations and winetasting. Sideshow alley was as popular asalways with the rain adding another element tothe rides. Rather than avoiding the rides in therain it seemed that riding in the rain was thepreferred option for most. The entertainmentaround the ground was amazing. Despite theweather the entertainers still put on a greatdisplay. A big thank you and congratulationsto Waroona Agricultural Society features

coordinator Katlin Hull for organising suchmagnificent entertainment. Katlin took this roleover from current President Maree Ellis and did agreat job in her first year. Hopefully next year theweather will work with her and you will get the fullvalue of what was organised. Congratulations andthank you to Captain of the Waroona VolunteerFire Brigade and long-time Waroona AgriculturalSociety member Captain John Twaddle forofficially opening the show along with ourexecutive committee. A big thank you andcongratulations to the Waroona AgriculturalSociety for another great show. Theorganisation of the show is a massive job and

In his address John reflected on thebeginnings of the Waroona show andhow it has grown into the wonderfulevent we enjoy today. John has beeninvolved for over 50 years beginningby helping his Grandfather as a schoolboy and has only missed one show in70 years! He made mention of theresilience of country people whosurvived the catastrophic bush firesearlier this year and the manyvolunteer service organisations whoworked tirelessly to help. In declaringthe show, open John congratulatedthe Show President and hercommittee members on once againorganising a memorable 86th WaroonaAgricultural Show.

WA FARRIERS ASSOCIATION – NATIONAL CHAMPTIONSHIPS HERE AT WAROONA SHOW

It was a great achievement that theWaroona Agricultural Society wastreated to the National Championshipsfor the 2016 Waroona Show.I spoke to the WA Farriers AssociationSpokesperson on show day. She wasobviously delighted to be here inWaroona. She also

explained that a clinic for Farriers hadbeen held here on Wednesday andother competition events on Thursdayand Friday. The clinic was fortunate tobe able to shoe horses from our ownLangford Hill Riding school. On Showday the heavy horses were being shod.

They are magnificent animals. Thenational championships attractedcompetitors from right across Australiaand a group of 4 farriers from SouthKorea were competing too. We areextremely fortunate that we were ableto host this prestigious event in

November 2016 Page 20IN THE LIONS DEN

October wasequally as busyfor the Lions asSeptember. Westarted the month

with the Fourth (not third as I said lastmonth) Farmers’ Breakfast at LakeNavarino. Again we cooked for about40 people and the team this time wereLions Phil Turner, Alan Lochowicz,Dave Miller, Frank Pisconeri and theever present Lisa Fry.

Then came the Waroona Show andas you’re all very aware, some prettyordinary weather. Like everybody elsewe were 40% down on the previousyear, and even though Jim’s Kitchenhad one consistently busy run from 12until 2, it wasn’t enough to bring oursales up to our normal level. Wewould like to say a “Big Thank You”though to three non-Lion volunteerswho stayed and helped us rightthrough that busy period, Leo ZacElliott, who worked really hard andobviously takes after his Grandad,Lion Phil Turner, President LarryScott’s sister, Paula Lade andHannah, a volunteer from CurtinUniversity who wandered in afterfinishing her stint of gate duty, sawthat we were flat tack and stayed tohelp us for the next two hours!!! Alsoa “Well done” should go to Jim’sKitchen Project Leader, Lion PatDeleo. The Animal Nursery in ourbrand new Lions shed, courtesy ofPeel Development Royalties forRegions, for the first time, had theopposite fortune, as the rain drovecustomers in seeking shelter. Lion

Mandy Ferguson, Project Leader, also

funds for Children’s Leukaemia andChildhood Cancer. They were muchdepleted to just 13 riders this year, partly due to an administrative changeover but maybe next year, we need todrum up some riders from ourWaroona area to join them . Bothmyself and Shire of Waroona CEO

presented Bike Ride Captain EricMaddock with cheques towards theirvery good cause. However thebiggest news of the month camewhen we heard that we’d won theCommunity Service Group of the YearAward for the South West region andwe were through to the grand final forthe whole of W.A, to be held at PerthConvention Centre on Friday October28th. So wish us luck!! From now on,we start winding down towardsChristmas. We will be running theWaroona Community Christmas GalaEvent again this year, which weresurrected last year, on Friday 16th

December, so look out for theadvertising for that around town andon Facebook and it will be evenbigger and better than last year.

for the first time, did a great job andwas ably supported by Leos BayleyBrown, Jayden Coates and the 3Franco youngsters and Lions PeterReynolds, John Lay and Louis Chiera. At our first social barbecue meeting atour new shed, two days after the show,we welcomed special guests RaWheeler of Wheeler Airfield, where thewater bomber planes take off from, during bush fire disasters and DeanUnsworth CEO of The Shire Of Murray.Ra gave us a really informativepresentation about how vital a part hisairfield plays in the event of thesedisasters and talked about how he istrying to raise funds to build a secondrunway, so that two planes can take offat once plus sink a bore, so that hedoesn’t have to rely on water tankersgetting out to him and build facilities forthe pilots to have somewhere to eatlunch and go to the toilet.Lion Grant Hewett then presented them

with a cheque for $10,000 which reallythrilled them because it meant that theycould now progress to the next phase ofthe project. When complete, the newrunway will allow a water bomber planeto get to Waroona every minute! At thesame meeting, we also presented LionPeter Reynolds with a signed FremantleDockers jumper, that we won in anauction last year, in recognition forproducing the Club’s Change- overNight Booklet for 26 odd years. Then onTuesday October 12th, we againprovided lunch for the South West Biketrek as they came through town raising

Hi there, herewe are again.Bright eyedand bushytailed ready totell you all ourexploits. Dadtook us all totheDrakesbrookWeir onesunnymorning. Yes,that’s right, the

Drakesbrook Weir. Bundled into theback of the ute like unwanted cattle,we were not allowed to sit in the cab.Oh no, we might make a mess Dadsaid! Anyway, Dad took an inflatableraft and plonked us all into that.Donning his brightly colouredboardies, Dad dragged us all out tothe pontoon in the middle of the weir.Well, we had a lovely time preeningour feathers and sunning ourselvesuntil some nuisance dog swam out toannoy us. A good pecking soon sawthe pest leave us alone. Dad laid on

THE GIRLS AT NUMBER 13quick smart. Zac, our Maltese Shihtzu friend, dropped by the other dayfor a chat. Hannah, our AustralianLangshan sister, and Zac, engaged insome secret talks for some time. Topsecret discussions were the order ofthe day, until the discreet meetingwas finalised. Partners in crime thosetwo! Watching too much television, that’s their trouble. We have beenlaying our eggs into the eighteen eggsize cartons with startling regularity.Keeps Aunty Jan and Uncle Donhappy. Beware of snake season now. With the warmer weather on thehorizon, snakes are beginning to lurkin unwanted places. Check long grasspatches near fence lines, wheresnakes hide undisturbed. The rear ofsheds, are also a favourite venue forthese unwelcome characters. Dadmade up a sign, saying “Snakes notwelcome here”, but we can’t reallysee what good that will do! Strangechap really! Well, that is all our news, enjoy the Spring days, and savour themoment. Bye for now.

the pontoon as well and caught up withFacebook. He seemed to really enjoyhimself. Got to keep Dad happy too youknow. After all, he does take us on allthese adventures! Henrietta, ourPlymouth Rock sister, decided to letloose and lay an egg, but it unfortunatelyrolled off the pontoon into the weir. Shewas devastated, but these thingshappen in the best of families. Dad justchuckled and let the egg drift away. Notmuch help when distress comes calling,is he? Lately Dad has given us moresunflower seeds, and our feathers shinein the sunlight. Hyancinth, our Australorpsister, has been strutting arounddisplaying her plumage with carelessabandon. Bit of a show off that one.Hermione, our Aracauna/Pekin sister, decided to up anchors and leave theHen Manor House one morning. Wishingto spread her wings and explore whatthe world had to offer, Dad shot off afterher. Giving Dad a run for his money,Hermione soon realised which side herbread was buttered, and hot footed itback to the gate. We gave Hermione agood scolding and she got the message

Ernie andhis hen also won Champion Pair AnyVariety Soft Feather. My BelgiumDuccle duo also chalked up secondprize in the Soft Feather Lt BreedBantam Pairs which was anothergood result with stiff opposition. Aspecial thankyou to Kellie Derosafrom Kellies South West Pet Serviceswho ensured the poultry sparkled forthe judges and the preparation

more Chocolate dark brown eggs canbe laid to compliment Matilda and itwill be interesting how those unusualcoloured eggs shape up in the judgingat the Brunswick Show. My ProjectEngineer Peter and I have been busyputting flat tin on the front gates ofchookyard hotel and in the end penhave placed a long sheet of tin tofurther ensure the hotel improvementsare both Fox, Dog and Rooster proofwhich gives the hotel residents fullprotection. Sadly traded in CharlieBoy my resident Gold LaceWyandotte Rooster at the MundijongMarkets this week and hit the jackpotwith a bid of $100 to continue his studcareer and not the pot at anothergood home. Amazing result for a birdfrom an egg and his only fault was redand bowed legs with outstandinglacing. Have acquired a youngunnamed rooster to replace him andhopefully he will continue the goodbreeding lines. Charlies sale price willhelp reduce the poultry food supplycosts and continuous improvementsat Chookyard Hotel. Another pleasingaspect is fertile egg production hasbeen in full swing and the last fourhatches have achieved No less that90% and a high 93 % fertility rate andits good to share your quality chickenswith other chicken lovers. assisted the final results on Show Day.Their treatment also acts as a tonic forhealthy birds long after the show. Allgirls did particularly well in judging withMandy a silver laced Wyandotte, Secreta New Hampshire, Truffle a PlymouthRock, Sapphire a Polish, Dalmation aAncona and an old favourite Priscilla aFaverolle all being awarded First Prizes.Second Prizes were also won by Maggiea Speckled Sussex, Aero a WyandotteGold and Mini a Gold Laced Wyandottebantam so Chookyard Hotel had its bestshow ever in three years of showing. The only disappointment on the day wasmy Araucanas failed to excite the judgeswhich was disappointing as that specieswere the feature breed on the day.Congratulations to Gypsy and Nadiawho shared the egg awards in the Hallwith two firsts and two second Prizeseach and the Chook Farmer scrambleda first prize in the tinted egg class. Thenumber of egg entries shows howpopular keeping Chickens to eitherexhibit or just for pets and householduse in the Waroona District havebecome. The three set of chicks raisedby brooder bantams Lacey, Red Brindleand Collie Black are thriving and red tobreak out of the brooder cages with theirMums. The Leadersand Guides would like toacknowledge the assistance of theWaroona Lions Club withmaintenance to the guide hall. This isvery much appreciated. We still havesome Guide biscuits available, soplease get in touch if you would like apacket or 2. Several of our girls, withtheir leader Kristie, and leader intraining Adele, went to Forest Edgerecently, to plant ground restorationplants, after the January bushfire.

Reports were that the girls reallyenjoyed the activity, which was ourfirst community service project for thisschool term. Our second communityservice project is assisting Tracy atthe tourist bureau with the Halloweendisplay. We have been busy coveringa giant pumpkin, which was verykindly crafted by Kristie's husband,Daniel,(he is pretty cleaver). Thesecond part of this project is thecreation of the swamp, and the girlsare having fun with this. In MidNovember we will host BunburyGuides to a sleep over. The sleepover theme will be to celebrate the150th Anniversary of Beatrix Potter, and we even have a special badgefrom England to give to all girls whoattend. Adele is assisting the girls towork through their badge books, andwe expect to give out a lot of badgesat the end of the year, includingseveral Service Flashes. November 2016 Page 29The Bowling Club Bulletin

Things havebeen “Go! Go!Go!” with the newseason here atlast, starting withthe two dayMen’s Split FoursCarnival on

September 28th and 29th, sponsoredby Home Hardware and Alcoa. Withtwo greens to accommodate us now,we had 28 teams competing, in factwe had to sadly decline a nominationfrom Boulder as we had no room forthem to play!! Maybe we need a “C”green now!! There were 5 metroteams plus country teams from as faraway as Dandragan and MargaretRiver as well as more local clubs fromEaton and Kojonup. The overallwinner was Neville Stevens fromOsborne Park

with Dave Carruthers from Eaton, second and Dude McCarthy fromMandurah third. It was a fantasticallysuccessful day and bodes well for thenew two green club in the future andspecial mention must be given toGrounds man John Hiller and hisexpert assistant Kevin Vaughan aka“Grasshopper” for the preparation ofthe greens. Also, thanks once again,to our fantastic volunteers in both thekitchen and behind the bar for theirusual dedication and hard work. Thenthe next big event was the new, improved Community Bowls night,

Both teams got off to a great start,Waroona 1 winning 52 to 35 at hometo Halls Head 2 and Waroona 2, 39to 35, away at Pinjarra. It all bodeswell for the new season and theLadies Purple team will get better withpractice. Last year’s victorious Men’sSaturday team, now playing in theSecond Division hadn’t yet played intime for this publication so news aboutthem in next month’s.

which started on Wednesday 12th andnow run by Sharyee Hayes. Again, because of the two greens, we havemore teams this year. Sharyee hasmade it a bit more interesting this yearby making a few rule changes. First ofall, everybody has to have ago at allpositions, Lead, second, third andCaptain by changing every threeends. It was a bit confusing for thefirst week but then I found in my teamon the second week that if one personfrom each team does the scoring allthrough, it can be quite good fun. Itnot only encourages more socialinteraction as the captains aren’tstuck together up one end for thewhole game but it also teachespeople new skills. The other “rule”change was that teams with only 3players now get a forfeit. They canonly play with two bowls each instead

of 2 of them player with 3 bowls. This is to encourage people toactually TURN UP as so manypeople let us down last year bynot being there and not onlycreating forfeits for their team butmaking it very difficult for theorganizes to re-juggle teams. Sofar, the winners have been theusual suspects, The Warriors fromthe Shire of Waroona, the firstweek and the Unbowlievableswith just 3 bowlers and 2 bowlseach, the second week. It just

shows you how good that those oldguys are! Then the Pennants seasonstarted on Tuesday 18th . This yearthe Ladies have two teams onTuesdays, Waroona Red in theSecond Division and Waroona Purplein the Fourth. The Red team played ahard fought 57 point draw withYunderup, whereas the Purple teamfeaturing a lot of new playersstruggled against Meadow Springsand were suddenly beaten 34 to 13!!The Men’s Tuesday team are nowplaying in the Fourth Division albeitwith two teams, Waroona 1 and 2.
