PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEDear Members

Fall is officially here and we finally received anice respite from the hot, summer days. TheGarden Room and Garden Terrace are now com-pleted and while we are still waiting for some ofthe furnishings, both areas are operational. Withthe change in weather we expect the GardenTerrace to be a popular destination. TheClubhouse has now been entirely updated overthe last three years. These improvements havedirectly contributed to the full Membership weare currently enjoying and compliment the out-standing cuisine and attentive service we receivefrom the Staff. It is good to be a Lakewooderthese days!

The next major project will be the Golf Courseimprovements, which are set to begin November1st. The timeframe on completing this project isexpected to be around July, but is somewhatdependent on the weather. We will keep every-one updated on all aspects of the project as itmoves from planning to execution. Currentplans call for the north side of La Vista to remainopen for November and December as workbegins on the south side. The Pro Shop is work-ing on accommodations at other clubs and theGolf Committee is looking to develop some fungolf events during the downtime.

Work is still continuing on the plans for the pool, tennis and parking. Concepts evolve during theprocess and the constructive feedback given fromthe Members involved in these projects leads toimprovements in the overall plans. We are closeto having plans that can be bid out to determinethe cost of these proposals. Once we receive hardconstruction costs, a recommendation will bebrought to the Membership, which will alsoinclude a financing plan.

On the operations front, the Finance Committeehas finalized, and the Board of Governors hasapproved, the budget for the 2014 fiscal year, which includes a $15 increase in dues ($7.50 forSenior Members). Many of our expenses such asutilities, taxes, labor, etc., have increased. Whilemanagement constantly looks for ways to reducecosts without diminishing the service level, thisincrease is necessary to eliminate a projectedoperating loss.

Finally, I want to remind you of the AnnualShareholders Meeting on Tuesday, November19th. The agenda will include updates fromCommittee Chairs, the election of the newBoard Members and any other appropriate Clubbusiness. Look forward to seeing you there.

CLUBHOUSE CORNERIt is October now and the Garden Terrace is ready for everyone to enjoy. As a reminder, reservations are not accepted for the new al fresco dining. The Club is trying to accom-modate as many Members as possible and holding tables would limit that goal to a lessernumber of Members.

• The Sunday Brunch Buffet is back.

• Saturday, November 9th is Miner Family Vineyards Wine Dinner. See the Featured Winefor October for more about Miner Family wines.

More importantly, the work on the Golf Course is scheduled to begin after the Member-Guest Tournament, and as a reminder, so is the remodeling of the wet area in the Men’sLocker Room. This is an unavoidable inconvenience and hopefully it will be for a very shorttime. During the remodeling, the Tennis Locker Room will be available for showers. Yourpatience is really appreciated and will be rewarded with brand new and working facilities.

FEATURED WINE FOR OCTOBERMiner Family Vineyards, “The Oracle”, 2008 110(52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Cabernet Franc, 14% Merlot, 5% Malbec, 5% PetiteVerdot) Very dark purple red violet color; violets, ripe black currant nose; tasty, tart blackcurrant, violets, cedar palate with good balance; medium-plus finish.

SWING FROM THE PRO2013 MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RE-CAP –Thanks to all the 89 Members who participated in the 91st playing ofour Club Championship. All braved two days of record heat and a final daywhen Mother Nature gave us a break with a little rain and cooler temps. The Championship Flight was one ofthe most tightly contested in memory and provided very high quality golf. Three players finished the 54 holesunder par which has to be a record. Andy McCabe won his second title with a total of 209, four under par. Hestarted the day tied at three under with defending champ Neal Barfield. Both opened with 37 on the front nineand they fell one shot behind Craig Dunlap who shot a spectacular 32 on the front to move to three under. Thethree stayed close throughout the back nine and all were two under going to 17 tee. In the group ahead, Dunlapfound trouble and eventually three putted to fall back to one under. That opened the door for McCabe to strikethe shot of the tournament, a 200 yard 5 iron to 6 feet that he converted for eagle and a move to four under.Barfield hung in, making birdie and was only one back going to 18. Neither could get close at 18 and long twoputts provided the final scores. McCabe 71-68-70=209, Barfield 69-70-71=210 and Dunlap 75-68-69=212.Outstanding golf and more evidence that Lakewood has some of the most talented amateur golfers around!

The 20 man President’s Flight was won by Stuart Kramer with gross scores of 75-79-74=228, beating runnerup Mark Nancarrow by four. Chris Kurzner won the 1st Flight by two over Eric Cromartie with a net total of214. Frank Adams went wire to wire for a three shot win in the 2nd Flight over Doug Dormer. MichaelWilson won the 3rd Flight by two over Rex Roberts. Hunter Peterson had the low net total of the field inwinning the 4th Flight by nine shots, a three round total of 207, six under par, over Greg Gordon. MikeMurray led all the way in the 5th and went on to a nine shot win over Keith Martin. It was a successful week-end and we appreciate the enthusiasm of our Membership who seem to love the competition.

The Men’s Senior Championship will be played October 5th & 6th. Players may declare for the ChampionshipFlight which is played with no handicaps or compete in the net flights. Players 70 and up will play the white tees.

The Lakewood Invitational will be played October 24-26. The Golf Course and all practice facilities will beclosed during the event. The Golf Shop will acquire tee times from several of our peer clubs if you need aplace to play on those days.

FROM THE COURTSWhat a busy fall season at the Club! In addition to the mixed doubles and junior team matches onSundays, the TCD tennis on Wednesdays and Thursdays, the USTA tennis on Fridays, wehave intra-club league play on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays forwomen, intra-club league play for men on Wednesday andThursday nights and numerous clinics and lessons goingon. Wow! It is no secret that our Members have madethis the busiest six court facility in Texas!

TENNIS TIP OF THE MONTHIn tennis lessons and clinics, we often talk aboutstrokes, footwork and the mental game, but this month’stip focuses on the first thing we learn as beginning play-ers ~ your grip. As tennis players, our interface with theracquet and the ball begins with our grips. Come see anLCC Staff Pro if you are not sure if you are in line with theparameters put forth by the USTA’s Player Development peo-ple and the US Pro Tennis Association’s guidelines.

• Forehand groundstroke: eastern or semi-western.• One handed backhand groundstroke: eastern for a one-handed topspin. Continental for a one-handed slice.

• Two handed backhand groundstroke: eastern or conti-nental with dominant hand and eastern with non-dom-inant hand.

• Forehand volley: continental, or very close to continental.• Backhand volley: continental, or very close to continental.• Overhead smash: continental.• Serve: either a continental or slightly on the eastern backhand side of continental for more spinand control, especially on the second serve.

Naturally, even the best players deviate from the prescribed grips on emergency shots or balls thatare particularly high or low, but the basic grips detailed above can help you with power, control, spin, and they can go a long way in preventing injuries to the wrist, elbow and shoulder. Come seeus if you need a ‘hand’ with the proper grip!

UPCOMING EVENTS
