All students need to be aware of the importance of general hand hygiene and have access to hand washing facilities with soap and hand sanitiser at germ hotspots.

Help reduce the spread of germs in your college by educating your students on the importance of washing their hands with soap.

Either don’t wash their hands at all or don’t use soap to clean their hands properly!

STILL DO NOT wash their hands when they visit the washroom

Of those that do, only 30% use soap!

Water alone does not clean hands effectively.

HAND HYGIENE IMPORTANT?WHY IS

TEACHING & IMPLEMENTING BEST PRACTICEOCCUPATIONAL SKIN CARE

Skin care requirements in colleges can be very diverse. With a wide variety of subjects and courses available to students, the type of skin care system required will vary in different departments. At college is the best place to start to teach and implement best practice for occupational skin care.

COURSESVOCATIONAL

Vocational courses should provide access to occupational skin care best practice for the type of work environment. For example, an engineering and construction student will need to be educated that it’s important to wash away dirt, contaminants and chemicals from their hands with an appropriate hand cleanser to reduce the risk of skin disease, such as occupational dermatitis.

In comparison subject courses that involve wet-working such as hairdressing and food technology students need to be provided with specific hand cleansers and after-work creams to maintain good skin condition. And don’t forget students planning occupations that involve working outdoors need to be aware of risks of the sun and the need for sun protection and how to work safely outdoors (see page 6).

Our hands are the main vehicle for transmitting germs.

¡ Germs and bacteria that cause common illnesses are invisible to the naked eye and can make us ill ¡ Germs are transferred by our hands, spread by people-to-people contact and through touching everyday

surfaces ¡ Poor hand hygiene may lead to increased illness ¡ Illness may result in student absenteeism which could affect their learning progress

THIS MEANS...

Open and pour-in soap dispensers are not as hygienic as sealed cartridge systems. This is because they are open to the environment and can result in bacteria and germs breeding inside the dispenser.

In a washroom there are various sources of bacteria: aerolised from toilet flushing, blown around from hand dryers and from hand transfer. Bulk fill systems are often inadequately cleaned and incorrectly refilled. Continual refilling can result in the new soap being contaminated by old soap as illustrated in the image (bottom right).

Bulk-soap-refillable dispensers are prone to bacterial contamination - recent studies demonstrated that 1 in 4 dispensers are contaminated2

Wet working is long lasting or repeated contact with water. Wet workers are at higher risk of developing occupational skin disease. Hairdressers and Beauticians are in regular contact with water and various chemicals on a daily basis and often suffer with skin issues throughout their career.

Educate your students on how they can protect their skin. Encourage the use of a pre-work cream at the start of each work period and a mild foam soap for general hand washing (see page 4). Provide moisturising cream to restore moisture and help maintain good skin condition and avoid skin dryness.

SUN PROTECTIONOUTDOOR WORKERS

OUTDOOR WORKERS HAVE A HIGHER THAN AVERAGE RISK OF DEVELOPING SKIN CANCER.

Workers in the construction sector are 6 TIMES more likely to develop skin cancer than the general population.4

Educate your students about the risks of working outdoors and how to protect themselves from the dangers.

If hands are not kept clean and in good condition this can lead to:

¡ Germs being spread from person to person and contaminating food
