ALL-STATE JAZZ ENSEMBLE INFORMATION Please carefully read the following information for the 2013-2014 KMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble. The audition procedures are: 1. There is a required pre-registration. 2. $5.00 registration fee per audition must be submitted along with the registration form. 3. Jazz auditions will take place one week prior to Concert/Symphonic/Orchestra auditions, Saturday Dec. 7th. 4. Audition times will be randomly assigned and mailed out to directors no later than November 15, 2013. 5. Once a student accepts a position in the All-State Jazz Ensemble, he/she will not be allowed to audition the following weekend for Orchestra, Concert Band or Symphonic Band. 6. A play-a-long practice/audition recordings are provided on the KMEA website. The solo line can be eliminated by panning your balance control on your stereo speakers. Students will audition with the play-a-long tracks. PRE-REGISTRATION Send one completed registration form including all students from your school. If a student is auditioning on more than one instrument, he/she must be included for each instrument on the registration spreadsheet, and pay the $5.00 fee for each instrument. Please send one check from your school account (made payable to KMEA) to cover the amount for all of the registration fees combined. When sending in your forms, please send the excel sheet and payment to KMEA, and email me a copy of the spreadsheet as well. Send all checks to the KMEA office, not to me. The forms and payment must be received in the KMEA office NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 4, 2013. AUDITION INFORMATION Date: Saturday, December 7, 2013. Location: Central Hardin High School. 3040 Leitchfield Road Cecilia, Kentucky 42724 (270)737-6800 Time: Check in 30 minutes prior to assigned audition time. Auditions will begin at approximately 12:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. AUDITION MATERIALS 1. Each student will perform Tunisia” or “Rose” with the accompaniment CD . Pianists, Guitarists, and Vibraphonists Perform the etude as written. Also be prepared to comp on the chord changes to the etude. Bassists Perform the etude as written. Also be prepared to walk a line on the changes. Drummers Perform the etude as written. Also be prepared to demonstrate various styles including Latin, Swing, Funk, Ballad, etc… as requested by the adjudicators. Saxophonists Perform the etude as written for ALTO SAX, TENOR SAX or BARITONE SAX. If you wish to audition on multiple instruments, you must fill out a form for each and pay the $5.00 fee for each. Trumpeters Perform the etude as written. To be considered for LEAD TRUMPET, you will be asked to demonstrate your range. If you are auditioning only for the section and not for lead, simply perform the etude. Trombonists Perform the etude as written. To be considered for LEAD TROMBONE, you will be asked to demonstrate your range. If you are auditioning only for the section and not for lead, simply perform the etude. To be considered for BASS TROMBONE, play the Bass Trombone excerpt. 2. Improvisation (Optional Bonus) All Instrumentalists who so desire will perform the melody twice, then solo for 3 choruses. 3. Sight Reading: Music will be provided at the audition site when the time is appropriate. 4. Scales: Students should be prepared to play a Chromatic Scale (full playable range) and Major, Dorian, and Mixolydian scales up to four sharps and four flats (two octaves when possible). COSTS Registration Fee: $5.00 per instrument Folder Fee: $45.00 (If selected for ensemble) Payable to KMEA once you are selected.
