Arizona catches a much-needed breakthis summer when the 82nd Major League

Baseball All-Star Game rolls into ChaseField in Downtown Phoenix in July.

Its a big year or the Diamondbacks,

says Derrick Hall, president o the ArizonaDiamondbacks. We have the openingo the new spring training complex, theAll-Star Game, which we wanted or so

many years, and the 10th anniversary othat World Series rom 2001.

The Diamondbacks winning the 2001World Series is signiicant or several

reasons: it was an incredible moment inArizona sports history, it beneited the

local economy as media exposure putMetro Phoenix in the national spotlightand those who came pumped millionsinto the states coers.

But since that memorable all the

series went to a deciding seventh gameat Bank One Ballpark, now called ChaseField Arizona has been hit hard by therecession, with the summer months bear-

ing most o the brunt. The All-Star Game couldnt have come

at a better time. The estivities surround-ing it the Home Run Derby, Futures

Game, Legends & Celebrity Sotball Gameand FanFest at the Phoenix Convention

Center will open the event to thousandso ans and inject nearly $67 million intoArizonas economy.

This approximation includes moneyspent by All-Star Week visitors, including

sponsors rom MLB, on lodging, transpor-tation, ood and any other accumulatedcosts rom visitors stays in the Valley andDowntown Phoenix.

Hall says with FanFest taking placedowntown, All-Star Week will also createsome jobs.

It is estimated that more than 100,000

visitors rom all across the country willattend, with past All-Star Games illing

between 14,000 and 16,500 hotel rooms

in host cities, which should boost hotelbusiness in Downtown Phoenix.

In addition to the throng o ans, sports-

    related programming and national outlets

such as the MLB Network and ESPNsBaseball Tonight will be broadcasting liverom Phoenix, spotlighting the Valley with

tremendous media exposure. The 2009 All-Star Game in St. Louis was

covered by more than 2,000 broadcasters, writers and photographers and reached a

television audience o more than 14.6 mil-lion viewers in 230 countries, according toMajor League Baseball.

To put this exposure in perspec-

tive, consider that corporate sponsorsattached their names to various All-Starevents in 2009 realized more than $38million in media values, says Scott

    Dunn, communications consultant or

the Greater Phoenix Convention & Visi-tors Bureau. Now consider that GreaterPhoenixs brand will be implicitly con-

    nected to every All-Star event.

Hall says he hopes this will promptmore tourism to the area in theuture, as well.

Were going to have a lot o visitorscoming or the rst time, coming in rom

all over the country, just as they did orthe World Series, Hall says. I want them

to be blown away at the riendliness and

knowledge o our sta, the beauty, com-

ort and saety o our building ... weregoing to showcase some initiatives we

have that no other teams do.The media exposure and the out-o-

    state visitors low expectations, especially

    regarding the temperatures, should have

Festivities take place prior to the 2010 All-Star Game. Photos: Major League Baseball

W elcome to the 11th oor, the rst oor o the Westin PhoenixDowntown, a truly distinct experience that will cater to yoursenses relaxing and rejuvenating rom head to toe and rom

within and out.As the elevator doors open, youre immediately enguled in the

Westins signature White Tea aroma, and tranquil music soothes yourmind and body. Roaming the spaciously wide halls with their high

ceilings, the earth tone color palette helps establish eelings o Zenand peace.

Whether youre a business traveler or part o a corporate group, the

Westin Phoenix Downtowns accommodations will prove to be unlikeany other hotel youll nd in the area. But with nearly 3,000 total roomsin Downtown Phoenix, how does the Westin even begin to competewith the other renowned hotels?

This is what (we) have to contribute to the downtown mix a level

o luxury, service and style, says Sally Cooper, PR consultant or theWestin Phoenix Downtown. This hasnt been here beore.

Construction at the Westin, located rom the 11th and 18th foors o the26-foor Freeport-McMoRan Center, began in November 2010 and opened

in March. David Sobek, director o sales and marketing at the WestinPhoenix Downtown, says locating the hotel within the Freeport buildingallowed them to open their doors much sooner, and with signicantly less

work involved (Perini Building Company was the general contractor). The Westin oers ewer guest rooms than most with a total o 242rooms on six foors 400 rooms ewer than the next smallest downtownhotel. However, each room is at least 540 square eet compared to the

typical 350- to 400-square-oot rooms in other downtown hotels.Guests can choose rom three dierent types o rooms, including the

deluxe guest room; 21 corner studio suites at 720 square eet; and seven,

one-bedroom suites at 740 square eet.

You normally dont build rooms this big, Sobek says. Hotels makemore money with smaller rooms, but because it was an ofce space, webeneted rom the space.

The Westin also is adding to the nearly 200,000 square eet o meeting

space already oered among the hotels within the Downtown Phoenix

area. The hotel caters to the individual business traveler, who Sobek saysis the market bouncing back rst, as well as smaller market meetings.

Sobek believes the Westin will be the hotel business travelers will

choose because o its size, service and level o comort.I think we have a niche that doesnt currently exist because we are

that upscale business hotel in downtown, Sobek says.Despite its intimate eel, the Westin also eatures dramatic oor-

to-ceiling windows in its conerence rooms and pre-unction areas. These windows boast panoramic views o Downtown Phoenix, in-cluding the picturesque desert and the bordering Camelback Moun-

tains, as well as notable venues such as the Phoenix ConventionCenter, Chase Field and US Airways Center.

As or Downtown Phoenix visitors and those working in the area, they

can take advantage o the Westins Latin-inspired, independent, Americanrestaurant Province.
