The Most Holy Trinity: Year “C” A Trinity in Unity: Three Persons in One God
I once read a story of something that happened in October 1995 when Pope John Paul II visited the seminarians at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore (USA). On arrival, he expressed his desire to first visit the Blessed Sacrament in the oratory. The security personnel quickly flew into action, doing a sweep of the building and especially the chapel. They brought highly trained dogs used to locate survivors trapped in collapsed buildings after earthquakes and other disasters. The dogs went through the halls, offices and classrooms quickly, and then ran through the chapel and into the side chapel where the Blessed Sacrament was reserved. Upon reaching the Tabernacle, the dogs sniffed and whined and pointed it out, refusing to leave (as if they had discovered 'someone trapped' there) and firmly remained there with their attention riveted on the Tabernacle. Their handlers asked in amazement what was in that box. And they were told that the right question wasn't 'what' but 'Who' was there. The bishop of that diocese commented, "It's funny that even dogs can recognize what some Catholics can't: that there is a real living Person in the Tabernacle and that He has been there for 20 centuries waiting for each one of us." We are celebrating today one of the greatest mysteries of our faith – the mystery of the Holy Trinity. In this life, we are supposed to understand before we believe, but in our relationship with God we are called to be-lieve before we could understand, for religion is nothing but faith seeking understanding. Though challenging a belief in the Holy Trinity may be, yet, this is a mys-tery that opens the door of the human mind to an infinite knowledge of existential and transcendental realities. Knowledge is a treasure to behold. No doubt about that. But come to think of it, there is no infallible reason why things are the way they are. Many things in life are given to us - parents, siblings, DNA, the world, etc. and many limitations in life are imposed on us. We have come to accept them for what they are. We may take it for granted that we know a lot of things, yet, human be-ings have not come to know up to 20% of the things that is needed to be known in the universe and the many other realities that surround us. We do strive to understand our environment and make sense of it, yet, the core essence of life remains a mystery to us. Mysteries exist to keep us humble; hence, the knowledge of a mystery eludes the human mind. A mystery creates the feeling of awe and hum-bles our pride. And awe evokes the sense of wonder and praise in the human heart. It is this feeling of wonder and praise that gives birth to worship. And worship is informed by faith; hence faith characterizes most of human relationship with the world as it is given to us. Yes, we live by faith, not by sight.
Authentic Christian faith is not the result of a lack of knowledge or na-iveté. It is rather the result of a humble and deeper knowledge of the fundamental truth of human existence in the world. Faith is not the prod-uct of ignorance but an honest acceptance of the limitation of human knowledge - that there is more in life than the human mind can compre-hend. Our Christian faith teaches us, among other things that there are three Persons in One God - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Our God is a trinity of eternal glory whom we worship in a unity of infinite and powerful majesty. The Trinity works in Unity. In God the Father, the world is created. In God the Son, the world is redeemed and in God the Holy Spirit, the world is sanctified and sustained in being. In each of them all is at work. Hence, both the world and humanity is the product of a mysterious God whose trademark is love. As products of a mysterious God, no one is alone in the world and no one can pretend to think that he knows it all and does not need the help of others. We are all interdependent and inter-connected. Each person is important in the entire scheme of things and the contribution of each and every one of us is needed to make the word whole and complete. We are all inter-related. Being created in the image and likeness of God implies that whatever I do affects others in no small measure. Even my safety, joy and happiness intrinsically depends on the safety, joy and happiness of others. Hence, we need to respect all. Belief in the Holy Trinity challenges us to think global and act local. We do have a responsibility to protect and take care of our immediate envi-ronment. However, we should never lose sight of the fact that the good and happy world we hope for cannot come about until all of humanity is treated with love, respect and dignity. Belief in the Holy Trinity opens the human mind to a clearer picture of true happiness and peace in the world. Our belief in the Holy Trinity should challenge all people of faith to realize their vocation to love which consists in promoting the spirit of cooperation over the spirit of competition. As products of a Triune God, our world should not be governed by a WE against THEM mentality. Unity is our motto. We ought to promote every progress that comes from unity and abhor every progress that comes from division. Since the world of the Holy Trinity is inclusive and not exclusive, any ideology or movement that promotes division over unity and cooperation is not of God. Finally, one of the consequences of sin is our inability to comprehend and appreciate ideal realities. Hence, the Trinity is not a doctrine of reason but of faith. It is not a mathematical formula for science but a religious formula for authentic existence - a successful and happy life. A complete knowledge of the Trinity may elude the human mind, because the Trinity is greater than us but as love, it is within our hearts. It is by living in love that we experience the unity of the Trinity- we live in God and God lives in us. This is the fullness of life.

The Bishops of California are urging Catholics to oppose SB 360, a California bill that seeks to force priests to disclose in-formation heard in the sacrament of confession. We know that can never happen. Priests will never disclose what they hear in confession.
We are asking all Catholics to tell your state Assembly mem-ber that we oppose the government interfering in our right to practice our faith. Sign a letter on: keeptheseal.com
