We are glad you are here. No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, and no matter where you are on the journey of life — you are welcome in this church. We invite you to participate in our worship service, or simply observe, as you wish.

We hope you will find Saint Paul’s to be a place of refreshment and renewal, where you experience the presence of the risen Christ. We have been serving Christ in this location for over two hundred sixty years. While our building is old and beautiful, our mission is contemporary and forward moving. Here you will find a people very much connected with the questions and struggles of modern life, of faith, and of following the way of Jesus.

We are a community called to serve those in need in our city, in our nation, and around the world. Here you will find ministries with and for children, youth, parents, seniors, singles, and families in all configurations and stages of life.

We invite you to share your contact information on a visitor’s card, located in each pew. Hand it to one of our clergy, an usher, or place it in the offering plate.

About Worship

If the liturgy (worship) of the Episcopal Church is unfamiliar, then we hope you will find this information helpful.

You are welcome in the Episcopal Church, and so the first and best resource we offer are your neighbors in the pews. Just say, "I'm visiting," and they will gladly help. The worship of the Episcopal Church is rooted in the practices of ancient Christianity. The structure of our services, the architecture of our building, the music, our physical postures, and participatory responses ALL hold rich meaning about our beliefs and are intentional expressions of our relationship with God.

• In this bulletin you will find:

Responses spoken by the people are printed in bold italics. Directions for the people are printed in italics.

• We encourage families with children to sit at the front of the Nave so that children can easily see and hear the liturgy.

• Children’s bulletins for readers and pre-readers are available from the ushers.

• Episcopalians customarily pray either standing or kneeling, so please do what you find most comfortable.

• Notify an usher if you require an assisted listening device or any other assistance.

• Restrooms are located in the parish hall. An usher will direct you.

About Receiving The Holy Communion

ALL who come in faith are invited to receive Holy Communion at Saint Paul’s.

• During communion, the people form two short lines in the center aisle at the steps. After receiving the bread and wine or a blessing at the altar rail, please exit through the door to the left of the altar and return to your pew via the side aisles.

• For those who may prefer not to receive communion at the main altar, a communion station is provided on the main floor to the right of the center aisle. If you are unable to receive at either station, the clergy will bring the bread and wine to your pew. Please notify an usher before the service begins.

• To receive a blessing at the altar rail without receiving Communion, cross your arms over your chest, palms on your collar, until the person on your left has received both the bread and the wine.

• If your children are in the nursery, you are invited to bring them to receive Holy Communion or a blessing.

The Old Testament Lesson Daniel 7:1-3,15-18

In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another.

As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: “As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever—forever and ever.”

Psalm 149 Anglican Chant by C. Villiers Stanford Sung by the Choir

1 Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful.

2 Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; * let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

3 Let them praise his Name in the dance; * let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

4 For the Lord takes pleasure in his people * and adorns the poor with victory.

5 Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; * let them be joyful on their beds.

6 Let the praises of God be in their throat * and a two-edged sword in their hand;

7 To wreak vengeance on the nations * and punishment on the peoples;

8 To bind their kings in chains * and their nobles with links of iron;

9 To inflict on them the judgment decreed; * this is glory for all his faithful people. Hallelujah!

The Epistle Ephesians 1:11-23

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who ac-complishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

The Holy Gospel Luke 6:20-31

Officiant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus looked up at his disciples and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.“Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.“Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry.“Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.“Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.

“But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

Officiant The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon The Reverend George D. Muir

The Nicene Creed Said by all, standing

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, ac-cording to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Paul and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread and Invitation

Celebrant This is the table, not of the Church, but of the Lord. It is made ready for those who love him and for those who want to love him more. So, come, you who have much faith and you who have little, you who have been here often and you who have not been here long, you who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come, because it is the Lord who invites you. It is his will that those who want him should meet him here.

Anthem “Praise the Lord! O heavens adore him” Michael BurkhardtThe Canterbury Choir

Praise the Lord! O heavens adore him; praise him, angels, in the height; sun and moon, rejoice before him; praise him, gleaming stars and light. Praise the Lord, for he has spoken; worlds his mighty voice obeyed; laws which never shall be broken for the guidance he has made. Praise the Lord, for he is gracious; never shall his promise fail. God has made his saints victorious, sin and death shall not prevail. Praise the God of our salva-tion; hosts on high his power proclaim; heaven and earth, and all creation, laud and magnify his name! - The Foundling Hospital Collection, London, 1796

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Parish Announcements

1st Sunday Offering – Your generous non-pledged offerings (cash and designated checks) on the first Sunday each month support our clergy’s Discretionary Account. Frs. Muir and Jenkins use these funds to meet urgent needs within our community, to further the ministries of the church when other funds are not available, and to support community programs and institutions that serve those in need.

3:30 - 6:30 pm — EYC (Episcopal Youth Community, grades 6-12) Movie Night: Extended Edition. Join Saint Paul’s EYC for an extended EYC night from 3:30-6:30 pm. We will watch the film “The Matrix” beginning promptly at 3:35 pm with snacks and then have dinner and discussion around 5:45 pm. We will discuss the importance of being “unplugged” and what we need to “unplug” from in order to stay focused on living into our Christian faith. If you have questions, please email Ranie at [email protected].

5:30 - 6:30 pm — Choral Evensong. The Saint Paul’s Choir will sing Evensong this evening at 5:30 pm. Included in the service is a new setting of the Preces and Responses composed by Heard Robertson, son of Tom and Lee Robertson, and a former Head Boy in the Saint Paul’s Canterbury Choir. Other music is by Gerre Hancock, John Rutter, and Edward Bairstow. Heard’s brother, John (also a former Head Boy in the Canterbury Choir and now a member of the Saint Paul’s Choir), will be the cantor for the music written by his brother. Please join us for Evensong and invite family and friends. A reception in Tyler Hall follows the service, and child care will be available.

This Wednesday’s Parish Fellowship Dinner features lasagna, salad, and garlic bread and is hosted by the Family Youth and Children’s Committee. Join us from 6-7 pm in Tyler Hall. Donations of $5 per person or $15 per family gratefully received.

The Book Club meets early in November and December! Join this fun group this Thursday, November 10, at 10 am in Tyler Hall to discuss The Giver by Lois Lowry and December 8 to discuss The Christmas Tide by Frederick Buechner.

Youth grades 6-12 are you registered for 2016 Diocese of Georgia Convention & Lock-In, Friday & Saturday November 11-12? Youth from around the area will gather together on Friday morning (that’s right, during school!) to help with convention related activities. It will be a fun event, but will also be an opportunity for our youth to hear what is going on throughout our diocese and meet other youth. For youth unable to participate during the day events on Friday, join us Friday evening at Church of the Good Shepherd for the convention Eucharist followed by the youth lock-in hosted right here at Saint Paul’s. Have questions about the event? Please email Ranie at [email protected].

Coats for Kids at Craig — Donation boxes are located in the narthex and in Tyler Hall. We need donations of boys’ and girls’ coats and jackets from children’s size 6 through adult extra-large. New and gently used light jackets and heavier coats are both needed, along with hats, gloves, and scarves.

Next Sunday is Birthday Sunday during “Coffee and Conversation” (10:30 - 10:45 am), ALL are invited to our brief but joyful celebration in Tyler Hall for all whose birthdays fall in November.

We need additional helpers to pack and move boxes at our next Manna Pantry November 18-19. Manna Pantry at Saint Paul’s Church provides a box of food six times a year to those in our community who need this supplemental assistance. Food is ordered from Golden Harvest Food Bank and is delivered to Saint Paul’s on Friday evening. Manna Pantry volunteers unload the truck, organize the food, and assemble boxes for recipients Friday evening from 3-5 pm. Recipients are registered and served on Saturday morning from 9:30 am - 12 noon. Volunteers also help carry boxes to the cars. Families with children and youth are welcome to join parishioners of all ages serving this ministry. For more information or to volunteer, contact Anita Tanner at [email protected].

Saint Paul’s Church communicates by a weekly E-newsletter. Join our email list by contacting the parish administrator, Elisabeth Price, or scan the QR on the back of this bulletin.
