Helping Eastbourne’s Homeless this winterBy David Barratt

Just under 2 years ago my life underwent a radical change after I became a Christian and entrusted my life and future into God’s hands. For me, this has become an everyday experience and an everyday challenge that has brought me into contact with a very different part of our Community here in Eastbourne.

I am part of a team of volunteers called Fatfl eshed and we serve a hot cooked meal to homeless people on Saturday nights, and provide a hot breakfast sandwich on Sunday mornings.

However there is no provision of a night shelter for homeless people in Eastbourne and so, under the auspices of “Churches Together”, we have planned a Temporary Winter Night Shelter to be in operation from this December through until 28th February 2012.

Several of our Town Centre Churches are opening up their Church Halls to become a rolling night shelter, one night per week per Church, to cover the extreme winter months.

Volunteers have been drawn from across many of Eastbourne’s Churches, and the host Church has appointed its own co-ordinator who looks after the interests of both guests and volunteers for that particular night.

Volunteers are providing a light meal and engaging in activities until bedtime. 2 volunteers stay overnight and then a new team arrives early in the morning to provide breakfast.

We are extremely grateful for the support of “Churches Together” in Eastbourne and also to our Lady Mayor for the wonderful support she has given to this project.

If you would like to consider being a volunteer for one or more nights then please contact: [email protected] 01323 470807

The Olympic legacy of 2012By Revd Nick Cornell

The New Year inevitably brings expectations and questions - will our plans work out? This year marks the coming of the Olympic Games to London which people have eagerly anticipated since the exciting announcement that London would host the games on the 6th of July 2005.

The Olympics represent not only the pinnacle of human athletic achievement but so much more! They are an opportunity for the whole world to come together around a common vision. The Games’ values speak of respect, excellence and friendship - values we all aspire to and long to see in our community. They are an example of humanity at their very best!

Sadly, our aspirations and plans often face diffi culties and setbacks. Just one day after the award of the games, London faced the tragedy of terrorism - an example of humanity at its very worst.

As a Christian, facing a new year with many uncertainties - the wonders of human achievement and yet also our many failures - I take comfort in Jesus’ words “...in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

We do not know what faces us in 2012, but Jesus points to a glorious future beyond this world for all who trust in him - a place where humanity will live at its very best.

Musings on ‘Bible By The Beach’By Mary Nixon & Ann Sweet

The theme for Bible by the Beach 2012 will be “Christ in all the Scriptures”.

We would like to encourage as many as possible to take advantage of this exciting event which takes place right on our doorstep here in Eastbourne

All Saints Church takes an active role behind the scenes serving as stewards at the conference, entertaining the children and the All Saints Church Centre is a hive of activity opening its doors for seminars and our own brilliant catering team provide sumptuous food.

So please put Bible by the Beach in your diary. It’s the May bank holiday weekend 4th-7th May 2012. We hope to see you there.

More Tea Vicar? A personal profi leBy Revd Robert Lovatt

Who’d be a vicar? Surprisingly quite a lot of people these days are interested and numbers seeking training for ordination are rising. Let me tell you how I came to be a vicar.

As an idealistic 17 year old I thought the study of economics would be the best hope for humanity. We needed to sort out world poverty.

17 was an important age for another reason I decided to give up church attendance. I only went because my parents went. Wanting to know what it was I was giving up I read the Bible and became hooked. This Jesus fi gure stood out as a person so utterly genuine and amazing I could not dismiss him lightly.

Reluctantly I returned to church and suddenly people seemed friendlier. However my idealism for economics remained and didn’t really begin to fade until I spent 3 years at Cambridge studying for a degree in economics.

However I ended up spending 8 years teaching Maths and Economics in 4 different comprehensives but eventually aged 31 in 1985 started at Oak Hill College.

In Plymouth I served three years as curate followed by 4 years at St. Michael’s church in Paris. Here I learnt a tough lesson. I was offered the living of a small and struggling church in inner city Nottingham. I didn’t want to go but had a sense that God was leading me there. It was reading a book entitled ‘Compassion’ by Henry Nouwen that I could resist no longer God’s call to down shift and so then began 10 very hard years in Nottingham.

I then took a call from a former Paris colleague who told me of a vacancy in Eastbourne he thought might be right. We’ve now been here almost 8 years, and as I said recently to one senior member, she can no longer call me the new vicar!

Eastbourne’s evangelist Glen Scrivener tells it as it is By Glen ScrivenerWhat do you picture when you hear the word ‘evangelist’? Whether you’re a Christian or not, the response is usually one of fear!

That’s why I always explain my job title. The word - when you translate it from Greek – means “Teller of Good News.” And everyone loves to tell good news!

The good news I tell is this: the God who made us and loves us has shown up on planet earth and His name is Jesus. When we see Jesus speaking, healing, stooping, loving, and dying we are seeing God’s heart for us.

The best news imaginable is that this God loves us and invites us to share His life forever.I work here in Eastbourne for Revival and am employed to speak this good news in churches, schools, universities, homes, restaurants, pubs, the streets, anywhere that will have me.

Revival also host the Prayer Centre at 13 Lismore Road and we are happy to pray with you or for you about anything on your heart.

If you’d like to talk further about Jesus, or if you’d like me to talk about Jesus to some people you know, or if you’d like us to pray with you or for you, don’t hesitate to get in contact: [email protected], 01323 439798.

The simple beauty of natureBy Sue Walker

Can you list some of the fl owers mentioned in the Bible? They include Anemone, Crocus, Cyclamen, Hyacinth, Iris, Lily, Narcissus, Star-of-Bethlehem, and Tulip.

All Saints Church is 131 years old and we all love our church building dearly and, indeed its many beautiful features. By providing fl owers and foliage the Flower Team hope to bring to life some of those features which we all can

overlook or take for granted.

However the prime aim is to give a visual focus to the three great festivals of the church year.

We use God’s glorious gifts to draw attention to the joyful messages of Easter and Christmas and to give Him thanks at Harvest time.

If we also bring pleasure to the congregation then we are truly blessed.

We rely on donations to provide the fl owers throughout the year so if you feel you can help do get in touch: [email protected]
