WHAT ARE VESPERS? (adapted from USCCB.org)

During Holy Hour this past Monday, we prayed Vespers in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Vespers, also called Evening Prayer, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office. In the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church fulfills Jesus' command to "pray always" (Luke 18:1; see also 1 Thessalonians 5:17). Through this prayer,

the people of God sanctify the day by continual praise of God and prayers of intercession for the needs of the world. The Liturgy of the Hours includes several specified times of prayer. The most important times, called the "hinge hours," are Morning Prayer (which takes place upon rising) and Evening Prayer (which takes place as dusk begins to fall). The other hours are the Office of Readings (a service with a biblical reading and a reading from the Fathers or Church writers or a reading related to a saint which may take place at any time of day), a Daytime Prayer (which may take place at Midmorning, Midday, or Midafternoon), and Night Prayer (said before going to sleep). Bishops, priests, deacons, and many men and women in consecrated life pray the Liturgy of the Hours each day. Their work is organized around this prayer, keeping God always at the center of their days. Lay people are encouraged to pray the Liturgy of the Hours as well, especially Morning and Evening Prayer. Many parishes in the United States schedule communal Morning and Evening Prayer on a regular basis. Evening Prayer gives thanks for the day just past and makes an evening sacrifice of praise to God (see Psalm 141:1). We encourage everyone attending Vespers at All Saints to participate. Unfortunately we can’t print out copies for everyone, but there are a number of online sources where you can find the Liturgy of the Hours (see below). You can also download an app on your smart phone and use that (please put your ringer on silent mode). Lastly, you can also buy a Christian Prayer book or a more expensive four volume set (which clergy and religious typically use and requires some page turning) if you are old school. ALL SAINTS PARISH 4 JULY 26, 2020

The Knights of Columbus, Council 202 stepped up to help at the rectory by cleaning out a room in the basement in order to make more space for our parish Food Pantry. Wow! There was a lot of junk to get rid of! They also pulled the weeds out of the side drains along the church. When the parish needs a group to gather together to make improvements, the K of C are always ready to assist. God bless you, each and every one of you.

FROM THE MUSIC MINISTER In the Universal Catholic Church, we are blessed with variety of musical genres found in hundreds of publications. It is only right that these days congregations bring their own style, ethnicity and cultural influences to make their Church feel familiar, homelike. Like the circles on the water, we have been free to move away from where our anchor lies. This year, however, at All Saints, we are changing directions – swimming back to the center, to remember the rich musical history and cherish the Oneness of the Catholic Church. We will focus on and explore ancient chants, texts and tunes. We will also review and refresh our understanding of how unique the Sacrament of Eucharist really is.

Back to Basics “Catholic Eucharist Hymns 101”

“Father, We Thank Thee” This hymn text is rooted in the early Christian church, all the way back to the Greek-language Didache (the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles), a Christian manual from the Church of Antioch, Syria, which some scholars date as early as A.D. 110. It is essentially a hymn of thanksgiving and praise concluded with a petition for the unity of the church, which reminds us of Christ's prayer that all believers "may be one" (John 17:21). That unity should be obvious when Christians gather around the Lord's table, but it should also extend within and between Christian denominations.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN CLASSES Due to the current restrictions and health concerns presented by the pandemic, the following temporary adjustments have been made to the adult child protection training requirements: All employees and all volunteers who may have contact with children continue to be required to complete Protecting God’s Children training. Due to our current inability to gather together for live trainings, volunteers can currently meet this requirement through participation in two online trainings: VIRTUS online PGC training and Massachusetts online Mandated Reporter training. To complete the online PGC training, volunteers should go to www.virtusonline.org. 1. Click on “First time registrant 2. On the next page click on “Begin the

registration process” 3. Select “Boston” from the drop down list of

dioceses 4. Complete the registration process Once registration is complete you will be directed to an online PGC training through VIRTUS. Upon completion of that training, individuals will be directed to a link to an additional online training on mandated reporting in Massachusetts. Both online trainings must be completed to be in compliance with child protection requirements.
