LOCATION AMENITIES The Old LA Certified Farmers Market operates in the
Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. The farmers market is open
every Tuesday from 3PM to dusk year round. One of the newest certified farmers’
markets in the Los Angeles area, the market opened in April 2006 and serves
Highland Park and other neighborhoods in Northeast Los Angeles, including Mt.
Washington, Eagle Rock,(Glassel Park, Los Angeles ) and Montecito Heights. The
OLACFM is of moderate size by Los Angeles standards, with about 10 participating
farmers. The market is located in perhaps the "downtown" center of Northeast Los
Angeles, adjacent to the Highland Park station on the Metro Gold Line light rail
system at Marmion Way between Aves. 57 & 58, one block from busy Figueroa
Street.
❖ HIGHLAND THEATRE The 67-year-old Highland Theatre, the last of a group of
1920s theaters that once formed the heart of Highland Park, has been
designated a historic-cultural monument by the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage
Commission. Designed by theater architect L.A. Smith, the Spanish-style
Highland at 5600 N. Figueroa St. features arched openings, decorative tile walls
and wrought-iron work on its exterior. The once-elegant interior had an
orchestra pit, a working stage for vaudeville acts, large ceiling frescoes, and
elaborate moldings in the shape of Spanish arches.
❖ AVENUE 50 STUDIO Since its founding in 2000, Avenue 50 has grown from a
small gallery to an active non-profit arts nexus, and is now an important arts
destination venue in the Highland Park neighborhood of Northeast Los
Angeles, a traditional arts enclave in the city. Avenue 50 provides a venue for
exceptional, up-and-coming local artists and poets.
❖ YORK PARK was built on the site of a former gas station at the corner of York
Boulevard and Avenue 50. The $3 million parklet covers just a third of an acre,
but is a little pocket of wonder the whole family can enjoy. The planners of this
new park, certainly made the most of every inch. While you won’t find much in
the way of grass, the space is covered with a bright teal and orange, shock-
absorbent surface and two main play surfaces.
