Service to humanity is the highest form of worship Swami Vivekananda

The Vedanta does not in realitydenounce the world. The ideal ofrenunciation nowhere attains such aheight as in the teachings of the

Vedanta. But, at the same time, drysuicidal advice is not intended; itreally means deification of the world--giving up the world as we think of it,as we know it, as it appears to us--and to know what it really is. Deify it;it is God alone. We read at thecommencement of one of the oldestof the Upanishads, "Whateverexists in this universe is to becovered with the Lord."

We have to cover everything with the

Lord Himself, not by a false sort ofoptimism, not by blinding our eyes tothe evil, but by really seeing God ineverything. Thus we have to give upthe world, and when the world isgiven up, what remains? God. Whatis meant? You can have your wife; itdoes not mean that you are toabandon her, but that you are to seeGod in the wife.

Give up your children; what does thatmean?

To turn them out of doors, as somehuman brutes do in every country?Certainly not. That is diabolism; it isnot religion. But see God in your

children. So, in everything. In lifeand in death, in happiness and inmisery, the Lord is equally present. The whole world is full of the Lord.Open your eyes and see Him. This iswhat Vedanta teaches. Give up theworld which you have conjectured, because your conjecture was basedupon a very partial experience, uponvery poor reasoning, and upon yourown weakness.

So work, says the Vedanta, putting

God in everything, and knowing Himto be in everything. Workincessantly, holding life assomething deified, as God Himself, and knowing that this is all we haveto do, this is all we should ask for.God is in everything, where elseshall we go to find Him?

In no way can we get such an overwhelming idea of the grandeur of Nature than when weconsider, that in accordance with the law of the conservation of energy, throughout the Infinite, the forces are in a perfect balance, and hence the energy of a single thought may determine themotion of a universe. Sri Sitambar Rai of village Raitoli ofKhunti district of Jharkhand has been alivestock farmer for the last 5 years. Andhe has been associated with BAIF asustainable development NGO withspecial emphasis on cattle and dairy forthe last 3 year. BAIF provides greentechnologies as well as breedingservice. In fact of the 9 cattle he has sixare the result of BAIF breeding service. And it was through them that Rai cameto know about Azolla technology in oneof the training programmes organized atKhunti.

VK-nardep backyard Azolla cultivationtechnology and use as bio-feed forcattle, has been taken up by agri-NGOBAIF for dissemination among livestockfarmers under directorate of animalhusbandry, Govt. of Jharkhand. SoSri.Rai when he came to know Azollabenefits as bio-feed he got interested. So he contacted BAIF I/C of Govindpur

DCDC, Mr. Amit Kumar. Mr. Kumar hasbeen working on Azolla technologydissemination for cattle and livestockfarmers in this are for the last four yearsand has been providing all extensionservices of Dairy Cattle DevelopmentProgramme. Mr. Kumar provided Azollaculture. He also gave a demonstration ofbackyard cultivation at Sri. Rais ownhomestead. By March 2012 Sri Rai hasestablished three Azolla beds in hisbackyard.

Now he gets an average of 1 kg ofAzolla from each bed, thus totally 3 kgevery day. This rich daily harvest feedshis 3 lactating animals, each getting 1kg of the green fern with qualitynutrients embedded in the organicbiomass. As soon as Mr. Rai startedfeeding Azolla, he noticed some positivechanges. The total milk yield of his cowshas increased by 10-15 %. Heexclaimed in wonder how one cattlewhich now in its 7

    thlactation period, was

giving 6 litres of milk, and after feedingAzolla, is now giving 10 litres of milk perday! This wonder has happenedbecause of synergy as Azolla hassupplied the limiting factor for catle.

Mr. G. Vasudeo, Secretary of NARDEP,Kanyakumari from where originally thisAzolla innovation started had come

down to Ranchi to deliver a presentationon the eve of National Seminar onAnimal Nutrition and Fodder Security(1

    stand 2

    ndof June 2013). Incidentally

he also spoke of how Azolla can be acatalyst and a major innovative node inmaking an integrated organic dairyfarming. On 3

    rdJune 2013 he visited

place of Sri Rai along with BAIF officersand BAIF DCDC I/C Mr. Amit Kumar. Hewas very much pleased to see theAzolla beds established at this far offplace.

The farmer cheerfully shared tbenefits he is deriving from AzoAzolla has not only increased tmilk production, developed t

quality of milk and health of tanimals, but also has been phasiout the chemical concentrate feedThus the farmer said with a smile is saving money and earning monthanks to Azolla. He also sharanother piece of interestiinformation. His BAIF born progehas come in heat at 10 months age itself. Azolla was being fed this progeny also.

The microcosm and the macrocosm are built on the same plan. Just as the individual soul isencased in the living body, so is the universal Soul in the Living Prakriti [Nature] the objectiveuniverse. Shakthi is embracing Shiva: this is not a fancy. This covering of the one [Soul] by theother [Nature] is analogous to the relation between an idea and the word expressing it: they areone and the same; -Swami Vivekananda

If you lose touch with nature you lose touch with humanity. If there's no relationship with naturethen you become a killer; then you kill baby seals, whales, dolphins, and man either for gain, for"sport," for food, or for knowledge. Then nature is frightened of you, withdrawing its beauty.

    J. Krishnamurti

Now this progeny is 2 month pregnant. His family members have recentlycelebrated the first birth anniversary ofthis heifer. The whole family hascelebrated the first birthday the sameway they do for their kids. Local sweetdish malpua was prepared on the eveof birthday and the sweet was fed to thisheifer also. For an Indian farmer thelivestock is part of a larger family. Alarge team has played a role in making

these extended family bonds green andhealthy.

The technology spread now has a self-cascading effect. Sri Rai has gifted 2heifers and Azolla culture to his relativewho is residing in the nearby village ofMandar thana. Both of his relatives havenow established Azolla bed with thisculture and now they are also feedingAzolla to the heifers.

Sri. Rai has now started providing Azollaculture to many of his relatives, explaining them and demonstrating themthe backyard Azolla cultivation. As aninnovative addition he has also startedusing Azolla culture in the paddy fieldalso. Sri. Rai discovered that during therains the Azolla has indeed gone into hisfield. Now the fellow farmers alsoobserved that paddy quality and yieldhas increased due to this.

Sri. Rai says he can now harvest Azollafrom paddy field during rainy season forfeeding to animals. This is an interestingcompletion of a cycle because Azolla wasoriginally promoted by agro-scientists asgood bio-fertilizer because of its nitrogenfixing ability. However Azolla could notcompete with and coexist with Urea.Often Urea application kills Azolla. SoAzolla as bio-manure/fertilizer wasgenerally considered a failure in terms of

    technology dissemination.

But the alternative approach of Azolla asbio-feed through backyard cultivation hasalso accomplished the use of Azolla asbio-fertilizer at various stages of cropcultivation. In fact as Dr. KamalasannanPillai the brain behind this innovationused to say Azolla once in homesteadshall find its way to the field as well. ForSri.Rai it is a journey of love his love for

his cows made his search for a good feedwhich took him through BAIF to Azollawhich in turn has come there fromKanyakumari the southernmost end ofIndia through directorate of animalhusbandry, Govt of Jharkhand. From thehomestead with Azolla entering his fieldnow Sri. Rai is slowly becoming not just abenefactor of green technologies but aco-creator: making the fellow farmingcommunity realize the wonder of Azolla.

Many times it is thought that proponents of sustainable development are against technoloHowever sustainable development is not about shunning technology but the choicetechnologies which will empower maximum benefit to the maximum number of humaover long lasting periods spanning generation. Maximizing welfare without plundering natis what eco-democracy is all about. These concepts are explained in this excerpts presenhere from our publication Akshaya Vikas.

Looking at the works of art that are considered worthy of preservation in our Museums, and thatwere once the common objects of the market place, I could not but realise that a society can onlybe considered truly civilised when it is possible for every man to earn his living by the very workhe would rather be doing than anything else in the world, a condition that has only been attainedin social orders integrated on the basis of vocation, "svadharma". -Ananda Coomaraswamy

Our education must help our childrento develop such a critical, scientific,truth-seeking attitude. What is truth? What is a true life? How to live a truelife and not a false life? This kind ofquesting and questioning attitude willhelp to bring out the highestpossibilities hidden in our children; andthrough such transformed children, ourwhole nation will develop its truewealth, namely, human energyresources, this is true human resourcedevelopment. This is what willintegrate man with man, irrespective ofcaste, creed, race or sex, and makeour nation truly great.

Vedanta, emphasizes the truth of ouressential oneness. It is one and the

same Shakti or Divine Energy thatcourses through every being saysVedanta. Therefore, love and concernfor others becomes a by-product ofthis spiritual growth from individualityto personality, from vyaktitva tovikasita vyaktitva. Vedanta throughVivekananda defines the science ofreligion as: 'the manifestation of thedivinity already within man.' Even alittle manifestation of this divinitymakes for love, service, creativity, andpeace. It endows one with more

energy, and the inclination to use thatenergy in the service of society. That isthe very soul of education increasing the energy resources inman and giving it a humanisticdirection.

Fueled by advertising, we dig the Earthup and chop it down to make thegoods which we can stuff into thatgreat big hole where our soul used tobe, each item promising that this time

buy me and youllfinally feel alright. But do we knowanyone who has ever reached the endof this particular path, has finallybought the one last thing that finallyresolved for them the utter catastropheof the human condition? Far from it.What we find is that the more that youfeed this addiction, the more addictedyou become. We need a kind of socialtherapy, and a change in theprogramming.

It has long been recognized that thatGNP is a distorted measure of value the more motor accidents we have themore GNP goes up, the more anti-pollution equipment we are forced tomanufacture, the stronger theeconomy etc.Its no use sacrificing ourdesire for ever more material junk, wehave to stop wanting these things, stopfinding them pleasurable rather thanbravely forgoing their pleasures. Likewith any addiction we must ask:What is the real underlying problem? What is it were not facing up to andavoiding by our consumption habits? And for this we need a spiritualmovement which replaces the falsepromises of the church of greed withsomething which really does feed us.
