The Western Regional Traveller Health Network (WRTHN) was established in 2003. It is a Part-nership of Traveller projects in Mayo, Roscom-mon and Galway.
The WRTHN work from the World Health Or-ganisation (WHO) definition of health which
states that “Health is a state of complete physi-cal, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. (WHO 2000)
The WRTHN adopts a whole team approach to tackle health inequalities among the Traveller
community. These teams consist of Project Coor-dinators, Community Health Workers, Community Development workers, Primary Health Care Coor-dinator and Designated Public Health Nurses ( Mayo and Galway only).
Who are we? The aims of the WRTHN are
• To facilitate the development of a collective approach to decision making and representation on the issues per-taining to Traveller Health in the Western region.
• To impact on policy and practice regarding Traveller health.
• To learn from and contribute to initiatives concerning Traveller health at a national level and in the other re-gions.
• To lobby for equality within health services and better health services for Traveller within the region.
• To facilitate and support representation on the Travel-ler Health Unit (THU).
• 2008 All Ireland Traveller Health Study.
• Information Sessions– Key annual themes in response to issues identified by Travellers.
• Development of policies in relation to Trav-eller health in the region
• HSE Traveller Health Unit (THU)- The net-work will ensure that there is adequate Traveller representation on the THU
• Create a Traveller only forum for the Com-munity Health Workers/ Primary Health Care trainees of the region.
