The band would play the Star Spangled Banner, or someone would sing it as a solo. I remember standing with my hand over my heart while those beautiful notes rang out. I watched in awe, the men who were part of the color guard. They were local farmers and businessmen we all knew well. They were role models in the community. I always got a lump in my throat at these gatherings. I felt so proud of our country and of the people who had served. I have been part of Veteran’s Day celebrations in many com- munities. I have spoken at many Memorial Day observances, but all those observances now take on a new meaning. Having someone in the military serving right now has given them new meaning. As we honor our veterans for their service, let us also remem- ber their families and the sacrifices they have made. These families are unsung heroes for the way they have supported their loved one. Veteran’s Day

Our sympathy to the family of Ken White, who passed away October 30.

Nora Jane Ratzsch, daughter of Jesse & Kayla Ratzsch, was baptized at HUMC Sunday, November 6.

Thank you to Jim & Wade Rickets, for delivering meals-on-wheels in the month of October. Thank you to Chester DeYoung, Jess Mulhair, Ceci Heiberger, Pastor Arlyn Coalter, Kris Rees,

Conner Beckstrand, Myles Rees, Lewhat Tesfaldet, Elly Mul-hair, Kate Van Voorst, Adam Burnison, Jill Heberlee, Dixie Meeks and Madelyn Luettel who prepared and served the Night-watch Canteen meal October 30. They served 246 people, 67 of them children, goulash, veggies, applesauce, dinner roll and butter at a cost of $1.00 per person. Your response to Teresa’s prayer request has been deeply ap-preciated. Especially thank you for the visit (I was unexpectedly at the doctors) and the absolutely beautiful dark-toned knitted lap robe which I put to use at once. Someone also brought me a color book and two sets of pencils to keep my creative juices flowing—very thoughtful. Most of it’s your concern and prayers I appreciate.

In Christ’s love, Marilyn Peters

Holiday Baking Time Do you enjoy holiday baking but don’t want/need to eat all of it? The Banquet needs homemade Christmas cook-ies and other treats for their “Sweeten the Season” fundraiser. They prepare platters of homemade goodies for businesses and individuals to buy as gifts or for themselves. Donations of holiday sweets should be packed in disposable containers and taken to The Banquet, 900 E. 8th St. on Monday, December 12 by 3:00 p.m. The Banquet staff will arrange a mixture of treats on plat-ters and wrap them.

Next Issue of the Spirit Nov. 23

Our first mission trip fundraiser was a great success. Thank you to everyone who donated baked

goods. What a great variety our shoppers had to choose from. To those of you who purchased items from our sale this past weekend, we hope you enjoyed them and we THANK YOU! There is still time to order pies! As of now, we’ve taken orders for 29 pies! You have until Wednesday November 16 to pre or-der your Thanksgiving pie. We will be baking Pumpkin $12, Apple $15 and Chocolate Cream $12. Our crust is home made, the apples will be peeled fresh, and the flour will be flying in the kitchen! Our baking day is November 19th, and the pies will be ready for pick up Novem-ber 20th. Freezer bags will be available if you’d like to freeze yours until Thurs-day. There is an order sheet in the Narthex, an order form on the church website, or you can email me to order your pies. Proceeds from pie sales will benefit our 2017 mission trip. This Saturday, November 12, from Noon—2 p.m. the youth and Tweens will give away the warm winter clothes

that our members have generously donated this fall. We’re setting up in Fellowship Hall and will work on arranging the clothing Friday afternoon. Volunteers to help with set up on Friday and/or distribution on Saturday will be appreciated. Con-

tact Kris Rees for exact times volunteers are needed. If anyone is aware of families who are in need of some warm clothes for winter, please invite them to come on Sat-urday. Blessings to you and your families, Kris Thank you to everyone who helped in any way with Trunk or Treat. Word is Hilltop treated 500 children! Runners had to be dispatched to the store for more treats. What a great out-reach to the Hilltop neighborhood. Time to start planning your trunk theme for next year.
