that those who entertained in

BIG ELM
Being a citizen of the countyRussell I should know some
something of its resources Rus ¬
sell county is not blessed with therichness of soil as some othercounties of the State But it has pa high dry soil very productivewith the aid of a little commer-
cial¬
fertilizer produces good cropsof wheat and corn and in facteverything that is planted in thissection of the State All of thecounty exceptingthe Cumberla hd
I river section is naturally adaptedI to the growth of wheat the yieldaveraging from 8 to 50 bushelsper acre We have three or fouiroller mills in the county thatgrind and ship large quantitiesof flour by the Cumberland toBurnside and Nashville We canalso boast of the best fruit coun¬
ty in Southern Kentucky Thepeach crop is the best in the his ¬
tory of the county the crop ofone man has been estimated ateight hundred or one thousandbushels
It appears thatour capital cjtybuilds up rather slow comparedwitn other towns of the county 0
however it has a new jail andbankbuildiii1
We can boast of the prosperouscity of Russell Springs surrounding the celebrated mineral springsfrom which it takes its nameThis city has built up in the lastten years to a city of considerablepopulation ofwideawake generous and business people It isremarkable how the farmers haveprospered in the last ten yearsTRey have erected new housesbarns fences and planted or-
chards some good meadows andas a general thing have improvedtheir farmers everyway
Thousands of acres of untouch ¬
ed timber such as oak poplarash hickory walnut and beechand all other large timbers areyet standing and will be a sourceof revenue for years to come
We have a number of goodchurch buildings good schoolbuildings and schools
I write from Big Elm whichtakes its name from the largestelm tree iniRussell cduiity or anywhere elset v vJ > A T
