Dear Neil: My sister lives along the Texas Gulf Coast. She has an invasion of in-sects that may be leafhop-pers. When you approach the plant, the brown bugs move around the stems where you can’t see them. She tried spraying, but the adults ei-ther fl y or jump off. Do they damage crape myrtles and lantanas?

You’re correct - those are out of the leafhopper clan. They’re probably sharp-shooters, and your descrip-tion of their movement to hide is the one that is most often given for them. Spray-ing with a general-purpose insecticide such as acephate or malathion will be best, but spray from the top of the plants, down - in a sweeping motion. Sharpshooters are more novelties than threats to our plants. Aphids are more common on crape myr-tles, and lace bugs on lanta-nas.

Dear Neil: We have a St. Augustine lawn, and early each spring a goathead-like weed sprouts and produces white blooms. The burs are awful. How can they be elim-inated?

Use a pre-emergent weed-killer containing Gallery in September. Almost all cool-season weeds sprout going into the fall so that they can be well-established by springtime. If you still miss some with the pre-emer-gent, you can control them after they are growing with a broadleafed weedkiller spray containing 2,4-d in early spring. This is the

same advice I give for con-trolling dandelions, clover and other broadleafed win-ter and early-spring weeds. If you follow the guidelines for them, you’ll be on target.

Dear Neil: We bought our house a couple of years ago, and it had a 12-year-old weeping willow growing near it. It budded out early this spring, but a late freeze killed it back and the early leaves were lost. Now it’s bare and appears to be dead. The bark has peeled off the trunk 6 inches wide and 18 inches long. Should I take it out? A friend told me they would last a long time.

Your tree, by willow stan-dards, had a long and rich life. Their average life ex-

pectancy, if you consider all the willows that are lost to cottonwood borers at a very early age, is probably eight or 10 years. It’s time for a new tree. If you plant any-thing before fall, you’ll have to hand-water it to keep it going all summer. Sprinkler irrigation alone will not be suffi cient.

Dear Neil: My zucchini plants produce lots of fl ow-ers but no fruit. Why?

Two possibilities, both in-volving pollination. When any plant in the cucumber family starts to bloom, it will produce male blooms fi rst (straight stems at-taching the fl owers to the vines). Only after a couple of weeks will the female fl ow-

ers (swollen stems that will develop into the fruit) start to develop. It’s nature’s way of ensuing good pollination. However, if you do see the female fl owers and you’re still not getting good fruit set, you have sluggish bee activity. Do some pollinating yourself. Pluck a male fl ow-er from the plant and strip its petals back to expose the pollen. Carefully daub the pollen onto the female fl ow-ers. Presto! You’ll be eating zucchinis just a few days later.

Dear Neil: What would cause the leaves of an angel trumpet to cup under? I see no insects. It’s almost as if the edges of the leaves have stopped growing, while the

centers continue to grow.The cause of leaf curl is

often hard to pinpoint. The various angel trumpet plants are rank growers, so they can exhibit unusual growth at times. Your plant may have been dealt a glancing blow of broadleafed weed-killer spray from afar, or it might be spring damage left behind by aphids, especially if it’s only the old growth that is affected. Moisture stress at a critical time, or even hot, drying winds may have been responsible. I’ve seen this a few times on the brugmansias, far less often on daturas.

Dear Neil: Why would the tips of my tomato plants turn brown and die?

If it’s only affecting thetips of the shoots, it’s mostlikely some type of mechani-cal injury such as hail orbreakage due to wind or thestems being bumped. Lookclosely for signs of insectdamage, and think, also,about any weedkillers thatmight have been sprayed afew days before you noticedit. If it does not get worse,and if new growth is unaf-fected, it’s of no concern.

different doctors I see and medications I take, a friend recently suggested I start keeping my own medical re-cords at home, but I’m not sure where to start. Can you offer any tips or suggestions on the best way to go about doing this?

personal health records is a great tool to help you get a better handle on your own health care, as well as avoid-ing possible medical errors. Here are some tips to help you get started.

It’s a fact that the more doctors you see, the more medical fi les you have. And the more scattered your medical records are, the higher your risk of drug er-rors, missed diagnoses, and other dangerous glitches.

The solution: Keep a set of your own records at home. And with all the self-help tools available today, it’s easier than it sounds.

Helpful toolsToday, there are literally

dozens of Web sites, com-puter software and paper-based products (some are free; others charge) that can help you gather your medi-cal information, create your health records and keep them updated. The idea:

Having your own health history at your fi ngertips can ensure better, more co-ordinated care. To fi nd a listing and links to all the different kinds of electronic and paper based self-help tools visit www.myphr.com and click on “Tools and Re-sources,” then click on “PHR Tools and Services.”

Getting startedTo start your personal

health record, you’ll need to request a copy of your health records from all your health-care providers, including your general practitioner, plus your eye doctor, dentist and any other specialist you have seen. Find out if your records are in an electronic format you can access, or re-quest paper copies.

Once you have your paper records in hand, keep them together in a fi le folder or binder so they’re easy to fi nd. Organize the information in a way that makes sense to you, but mark it clearly, so it makes sense to others as well. And be sure your loved ones have access to it if you become incapacitated. If your records are stored elec-tronically (on your computer or a Web site), be sure they know where to fi nd it, and have any necessary pass-words for access.

After you’ve created your personal health record, be sure to take it with you to

all doctor appointments and remember to keep updating it. To make your electronic health records portable there are a number of han-dy USB fl ash drives (like www.medkey.com, www.em-rystick.com, www.vitalkey.com) that are about the size of a house key that can hold your medical records and be updated easily.

Having strong opinions about ev-erything and sharing all of them, even when they’re not wanted, is not a for-mula for social success. But many of us face a problem that’s quite the opposite - being hesitant to speak our mind and voice our opinions, even when invited to and when doing so could offer some real help.

Often, we’re reluctant to speak up because we doubt the value of what we have to offer. We fear others may criticize or reject our views, suggesting we’re “wrong.” Such fears are very real, but they shouldn’t defi ne you.

While it takes courage to speak up, especially if it’s something you usu-ally do, it’s a valuable skill to learn to manage your fears and act responsibly. Rather than being silent and then re-gretting not saying something, learn-ing to express yourself can bring a real sense of accomplishment and involve-

ment.Speaking up doesn’t mean that

you’ve made your self-doubts disap-pear, but that you’re courageously tak-ing action in the face of those doubts. The key to speaking up is to mix the acknowledgment of self-doubt with re-fusing to accept the status quo.

Being respectful is an important ele-ment in learning to speak your mind. It starts by learning to listen fi rst. You need to show you understand the views and opinions being expressed by others before sharing your own.

Your goal is not to convince others or start an argument, but rather to ex-press the differences you feel. By shar-ing your own experiences and opinions you let others see new sides of you and your opinions on a subject.

You can avoid arguments by starting your views with the word “I.” You also must accept that while what you’re ex-pressing is what you know to be true, others will be feeling exactly the same way about their views.

Being decisive is another element in learning to express yourself openly. You want to clearly and strongly state your thoughts without worrying about the outcome.

Don’t undercut your views with phrases like “Now this may not be true...” or “I’m not sure about this...” Instead, be bold, take a stand and al-low others to do the same.

Speaking up allows us to interact with others and live life more fully. While what you have to say may some-times be dismissed, there will be other times when you really communicate and make a difference. Those are the times that will mean the most.

Wise County 4-H’ers were in College Station last week at the State 4-H Roundup. The county was well repre-sented with 14 4-H’ers that competed in several differ-ent events.

The start of the week was great as two 4-H’ers re-ceived scholarships through the 4-H Foundation. Can-dace Brister was awarded a $2,000 scholarship and Beth Ferguson was awarded a $15,000 scholarship.

In Consumer Decision Making, Anna Fortenberry, Andrea Martinets and Laci Terrell placed fourth as a team and Alicia Erwin, Syd-ney Lawrence and Jake Wil-liams placed 10th as a team. Laci Terrell also placed sec-

ond high individual overall. The Livestock Judging

team also competed, but they did not make the top 10. Team members were Jon Walters, Mi-chael Pate, Morgan Henry and Megan Cantrell.

In Fabric and Fashion Design, Jake Williams placed second with his textile de-sign and Andrea Martinets placed 19th with her Apparel De-sign. Also, Jennifer Endsley placed 8th in the buying cat-egory of the Fashion Show.

Jennifer Ward placed 8th in the vocal category. Jen-nifer also wowed the crowd when she sang the national anthem Wednesday night.

Jake Williams and Anna Fortenberry participated in the Food Show and Andrea

Martinets par-ticipated in public speaking.

Wise County also had seven 4-H’ers that placed in the State Pho-tography Competi-tion: Anna Forten-berry placed Blue in B&W-Natural Landscape; Daniel Jordan placed Red in B&W-Architec-

tural Elements, Blue in B&W-Plant/Flora and Blue

in Color-Plant/Flora; Mar-ley Moyers placed Blue in Color-Animals; Brandy Pitts placed Blue in Color-Architectural Elements; Ty-ler Tamplen placed Red in Color-Natural Landscape, Blue in B&W-People, and Blue in Color-People; Mea-gan Tucker placed White in Color-Still Life; and Jennifer Ward placed Blue in B&W-Animals, Blue in All Media-Special Effects/Creative Ef-fects, and Blue in B&W-Still Life.

Congratulations to all of these 4-H’ers.

By properly timing their pregnancies, women can decrease their risk of having a baby born prematurely and having other health problems. Intervals between pregnancies that are either too long or too short are not as desirable as those in the middle. For instance, research shows that intervals of less than six months from delivery to conception of the next baby increased the risk of preterm birth (less than 35 weeks) by 41%. The recommendation is to wait a minimum of 12 months before becoming pregnant again. On the other hand, waiting longer than 59 months between delivery and the next pregnancy was found to raise the risk for health problems such as the baby being small for gestational

age by 20%-43%.

It’s possible to save money shopping for groceries without cooking every-thing from scratch, packing your purse with coupons or purchasing foods in season. Over the next couple of weeks we will look at 16 easy tips that can total big bucks. The source for this information comes from Alice Henneman of Nebraska Ex-tension.

1. Keep a grocery list. Gas for an extra trip to the store easily can add a dollar or more (depending on distance) to your grocery bill. And the less you shop, the less likely you’ll make an impulse purchase. Keep a grocery list where it’s easily accessi-ble, such as on the fridge and remem-ber to take it with you to the grocery store. Stick to your list for added sav-ings, but do stay fl exible if you encoun-ter a sale.

2. Garbage check. We lose money whenever we toss food because it spoiled before we got around to eating it. If leftovers get thrown out because they’re left too long, we’re putting money in the garbage can. If wilted lettuce is a frequent occupant of your garbage can, serve more salads at the beginning of the week. Tossing a half bag of lettuce can cost $1.

Ripe bananas can be frozen and then used later in banana bread.

3. Avoid shopping when hungry. Ev-erything looks good on an empty stom-ach. And, it’s all too easy to buy some-thing to tide us over in the car until we

make it home, this may add up to at least a $1.50 or more. Eating before going shopping not only helps forestall im-pulse buys, it may save calo-ries.

4. Brown bag it. If you nor-mally eat out at noon, consid-er brown bagging it at least one day a week. The typical fast food meal out easily can cost $5 or more. Take food left over from the evening meal to work the next day. A peanut

butter sandwich and a piece of whole fruit quickly can be packed from foods on hand. Eating a sack lunch once a week can save $2.50 or more! Eating a sack lunch fi ve days a week may save $12.50 or more!

5. Coupon common sense. Use cou-pons only for foods you normally would eat, rather than for “extras.” If you have access to a computer, check online for coupons. For starters, check the Web site of the store where you shop or of products you use. Examples of ways to save with coupon sense: not buying that new dessert mix: Save $2. Using two 50-cent coupons for items you do use: Save $1.

6. Check expiration dates. Avoid buy-ing a food that is past its prime. If it’s on sale and near its expiration date, use it soon. You may save at least $2.50 by planning to avoid dumping a half gallon of soured milk down the drain.

7. Small scale experiments. Before trying a new food, buy the smallest size of package. If your family doesn’t like the food, you won’t be stuck with a big box of it. For example, save $1.50 by limiting your purchase of an exotic spice you discover your family won’t eat to a small container.

8. Costly convenience foods. How much time do you really save when you buy a convenience food? It takes just a few seconds to mix your own sugar and cinnamon rather than buy-ing it pre-mixed. Microwaving a bowl of regular oatmeal rather than pouring hot water over a pre-measured pack-age adds only a few minutes. Buying a carton of old-fashioned or quick oat-meal that provides 30 servings versus buying three boxes of instant oatmeal that contain 10 packets each will save $5.50.

The more of these tips you can use and the more foods you can use them with, the more you can save. If you were able to use each of the preced-ing examples in one shopping trip, you could save as much as $20 a week or $1,000 a year. Next week we will look at ways to save even more money.

This is the time of year cinch bugs start to show up in home lawns across much of north Texas. There are already some lawns in Wise County that have been damaged and certainly oth-ers will follow. These pests usually show up in areas adjacent to a driveway, side-walk or curb in areas of full sun. If you catch them early they are easy to control with an application of a labeled product. Sevin and orthene are just two of the insecti-cides labeled and available to homeowners.

Expanding irregular

patches of dead grass pro-vide the fi rst clue that cinch bugs are present. The grass may give the ap-pearance that you would normally associate with drought. Damage can develop rapidly, especially in sunny locations during hot, dry weather.

Adult cinch bugs are small and slen-der (1/5 of an inch long). They have black bodies with white wings. Each wing has a distinct, triangular black mark.

The fi rst step when using a pesticide for cinch bug con-

trol is to determine whether a problem really exists. Look for off-color areas, especially

in direct sun and along sidewalks and driveways. With a close-up inspection, cinch bugs may be seen walking on leaves or scurrying about the sidewalk.

When visible damage is abun-dant, insecticides use can prevent further injury.

Both liquid and granular in-secticides are available for cinch bug control.

In cases where cinch bugs are found in isolated areas

of the lawn, use spot treat-ments. Treat the off-colored turf and all surrounding ar-eas. Inspect the site every two to three days for at least two weeks to determine if the infestation is under control. Spot treatments minimize the impact of pes-ticides on benefi cial insects and help avoid environmen-tal contamination.

When applying pesticides, always read the label to see what appropriate clothing should be worn and for in-formation concerning safe re-entry times.

A potential client once asked Capt. Mike Williams to describe hooking and landing a big shark. Williams, who has spent a lifetime fi shing and guiding anglers in the bays and Gulf around Galveston, answered: “It’s like standing on a street corner with a rod and reel and hooking a passing Har-ley Davidson going 80 miles an hour. I tell my new clients to anticipate the fi sh fi ght of their lives, then multiply their expectations by 10, and they will come close to understanding the sheer power of a big shark.

The only way to fully understand what shark fi shing is really all about is to do it. Years ago, when I fi rst began fi shing with Mike, I predicted shark fi shing would one day become the big-gest draw for his summer fi shing cli-ents. That day has come! Mike keeps his big Boston Whaler heading out of the Galveston Yacht Basin, in route to the ‘close in’ waters off Galveston Island on a daily basis. During the summer months, he is taking his clients out to do battle with Black Tip, Spinner, Bull and occasionally Hammerhead and Ti-ger shark. One of his clients landed a 400 pounder this summer and shark in the 50-120 pound range are common. The hotter the weather gets, the better the shark fi shing. Most of this action takes place within a few miles of the Galveston beach front. A boat ride of three to ten miles out from the Galves-ton Jetties puts one smack dab in the middle of some of the best shark fi sh-ing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Capt. Mike employs several tech-niques to attract and catch shark. Floating big pieces of cut bait, or whole gizzard shad under balloons is prob-ably the most common but he also uses down lines with heavy weights when the shark are feeding closer to bottom. Just about any large, natural bait will entice a strike from a passing shark. Big, 16/ought circle hooks are used and reels are spooled with 50-80 test mono-fi lament line with 200 pound mono leaders.

“Some shark fi shermen prefer wire or cable leaders but I stick with mono-

fi lament. The circle hook almost al-ways hooks the shark’s lips and seldom comes in contact with the sets of razor sharp teeth, thus eliminating the need for wire leaders. I like the idea of being able to cut the line if something goes wrong when the shark fi nally comes boatside. Bull shark are well known for being aggressive. I instruct my cli-ents to stay well clear of their mouths when we pull them up boatside for pictures. We release the majority of sharks we catch. The daily limit is one per person and many of my clients like to take home a Blacktip in the 30-60 pound range for grilling. An average trip produces catch and release action on upwards of fi fteen or twenty sharks, sometimes twice than many.” Says Wil-liams. Butchered properly, Blacktips are excellent eating, especially when cooked quickly over hot coals and mar-

inated with lemon juice.Blacktip Shark is the most common

species landed. They can easily be iden-tifi ed by the distinctively dark black tip to their fi ns. Spinner Shark are sometimes confused with the Blacktip but their fi ns are more gray and their body is not quiet as streamline.

I’ve caught many sharks while fi sh-ing with Capt. Mike through the years and highly recommend a shark trip for folks that have never caught a truly big, strong fi sh. Once Capt. Mike reaches the most productive waters, the baits are put out, usually four or fi ve, some fl oated near the surface un-der balloons, some straight down with heavy weights. Rods are placed in hold-ers and fi shermen usually don’t have to wait long for the action to begin. A

reel will begin singing when a passing shark picks up one of the baits and line quickly strips off, as Capt. Mike so aptly describes, “as though it were hooked to a passing motorcycle”. Once the rod is winched out of its holder, it’s a matter of simply hold-ing on and letting the rod and reel’s drag begin the job of slowly tiring the shark. Shark don’t tire easily! I’ve timed the battles and a 50-80 pound shark will keep the angler busy for about 15-25 minutes, maybe a bit

longer. Fourteen minutes might not seem like a great expanse of time; it goes by in a fl ash when watching TV or most other mundane activities but, when hooked to a hard pulling shark, it’s fi fteen or twenty minutes of adrenaline pumping, time suspending sheer excite-ment. The drill goes some-thing like this: Capt. Mike will instruct you to “hang on and take up slack when you can.”

In the beginning of the fi ght, there will be no slack given by your shark. You just

hold on to the sharply bent rod and watch the shark attempt to strip your reel. You will think he’s going to before he stops his fi rst run. You’ll circle the perimeter of the boat ten or fi fteen times as your shark swims in a big circle, fi fty or more yards out from the boat. Capt. Mike will relax and watch the show, he instinctively knows when to go into action. The shark’s runs will get short-er and shorter and you will feel him slowly, very slowly, succumbing to the steady pressure you and your rod

and reel are applying. Then, Capt. Mike will stand up and say something like,” one more time around the boat and he will be ready to land.” His prediction, tempered by years of experience, is usu-ally right on target. Unless it’s a smaller Blacktip you plan to eat, your shark will be pulled up beside the boat for a photo session and re-leased. You will set down, smiling, and be secretively relived the battle is over. You are anxious to become a relaxing spectator when the next battle gets underway!

Make sure and bring along a large ice cooler to keep your fresh shark meat chilled when you go shark fi shing. Shark is excellent grilled quickly over red hot coals and seasoned with your favorite dry seasonings and marinated a few hours in lemon juice.

Like people, pets can suf-fer from the discomfort of hot, sticky days. Dr. John August, a professor in Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, offers these tips to keep Fido from getting fried and your kitty from getting too sweaty.■ Monitor temperatures

If you would not keep a child inside a hot car with the windows up, why would you place your pet in the same situation? “It’s not uncommon for the temperature to reach 120 degrees or more inside a car on a hot summer day,” August says. “Just as with a child, you should never leave a pet in a car during the summer. Even just a few minutes can be deadly.”■ Airline travel is tough-

er on some pets than oth-ers. “Dogs such as bulldogs, Pekingese and Pugs, and cats such as Persians, have shorter noses than most other breeds and can have diffi culty breathing on an airplane and often are more susceptible to heat stress. If possible, try to take a direct fl ight early in the morning instead of one that has sev-eral stops.”■ Don’t shave your pets,

ural swimmers, and certain-ly most cats aren’t,” August explains. “You should super-vise your pets around water just as you would a child. It’s not uncommon for dogs or cats to drown.”■ Beware of mosquito

bites. “Mosquitoes are very prevalent this time of year, and they transmit heart-worms, which can then be passed on from one pet to an-other,” notes August. “Also, this is the worst time of year for fl eas and ticks, and there are plenty of good products available from your veteri-narian to control them.”■ Watch for fi re ants on

the attack. Just as they bite people and cause welts and swelling, fi re ants can cause problems for your pets. “If you see a fi re ant mound in your yard, get rid of it for your pet’s sake,” August says. “Animals don’t like fi re ants any more than we do.”■ Fertilize your lawn with

care. “If you use fertilizer, it’s not a bad idea to keep your pet away from that area until it’s been washed

into the soil,” August says. “Also, insecticides and pets don’t go together. They can make a pet ill or even cause death. Be careful applying yard chemicals, and always make sure they are not near a water dish where the pet might drink them.”■ Exercise your pet with

caution. August says that dogs like to be taken for a walk, but it should not be done in the heat of the day. “Remember that dogs have padded feet, and the sidewalk can be too hot for them,” he believes. “It’s a good idea to walk them on grass if possible, and prefer-ably in the early morning or evening.”

August says that with some common sense and responsible pet ownership, your animal should make it through the hot summer months in good shape. He adds that there’s one good rule of thumb to follow: “If it’s too hot for you out there, it’s probably too hot for your pet, too.”
