JANUARY 2014

Honorable Michael P. Cahill

Mayor JULY 2018

All American Summer

In my opinion there’s nothing more

quintessential American than our Fourth

of July celebrations, homecoming festivities and life

on the North Shore of Boston during July and August.

There’s something for everyone – parades, fireworks,

cookouts, outdoor concerts, beach days, fried clams,

lobster rolls, ice cream, block parties and stunning

ocean views. I hope to see you out and about enjoy-

ing the festivities in our beautiful city this month.

To me, the joy of living in Beverly or a surrounding

town are all part and parcel of the American dream of

our Founding Fathers. The promises of the Declara-

tion of Independence such as the unalienable rights of

freedom, equality, liberty, opportunity, and the

pursuit of happiness have all allowed us to follow our

own path in life, without fear of reprisal. In spite of

our principles, there are still many examples of

injustices in our own country and because we have

the wisdom of age, we should speak up and out when

confronted with discrimination in any of its forms.

As I write this I am thinking about those young adults

at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17

of their classmates were lost to gun violence. They

witnessed this mass shooting in a place that should

always be a safety zone – their school – and they

have become powerful voices for change in our

country. Kudos to them for their activism after such a

horrible tragedy!

When I hear about the outrageous treatment of

human beings in other parts of the world, I

understand the desire to immigrate to the United

States. I am a grateful descendant of both Irish

and Polish immigrants and I am sure many of

you have your own stories of immigrant families

working hard for the American dream. My hope

is that that we can be open minded and welcom-

ing to a new generation of immigrants who want

to live in the land of the free and the home of the

brave. It’s a new melting pot of various ethnici-

ties and languages to which we must learn to em-

brace.

Let me get off my soap box and back to summer

in Beverly. There are concert series slated for

Lynch Park on Sunday nights, at the Beverly

Public Library on Wednesday evenings and at

the Beverly Common on Thursday nights. Don’t

forget to sign up for our annual Senior Day in the

Park on August 2 – this event is always so much

fun! The rest of this newsletter is full of wonder-

ful activities and programs for your enjoyment.

Before I go, I would be remiss if I did not remind

you to stay hydrated this summer – drink lots of

cool water, stock your freezer with some popsi-

cles and on those truly hot and muggy days re-

member to visit us for some free air-conditioning

and friendly people.

Enjoy your summer!
