A Day in the Life
8th year Math Teacher at Mission. First year teaching AP Computer Science. Life before teaching: materials scientist, technical group leader, and/or manager for Xerox (3 years),
Eastman Kodak (15 years), and Seagate Technology (7 years).
Technical expertise: rewritable memory disks for information storage - hard disk, CD, DVD.
Time to re-career from high tech to teaching: one year - St. Mary’s credential program.
Wife: Rene, also a teacher – Mission Valley ROP, Fremont – Nursing, Home Health, Anatomy and
Physiology.
Children: Carl, sophomore+ in college, and Margaret, 12th grade.
Pets: three dogs – Mousse, Mocha, and Emmi; two cats – Christal and Angel; one rabbit - Baby;
one tortoise – Stevie; two chickens – Speckles and Freckles.
Life before kids: traveling the world on business with my wife, and sometimes my Mom.
Life before working: getting an education – PhD, Engineering Physics, Cornell University.
Born and raised: on a farm near Rochester, New York - moved to Pleasanton in 1997.
Most successful sport: competitive cycling . 101 miles over Mt. Hamilton this summer with Mr.
Boegman.
Favorite sport: basketball - grew up shooting hoops on the side of a barn, still shoot.
Varsity sport in high school and college: gymnastics, floor exercise - Ivy League Champs.
Best sport currently: running - 2000 Boston Marathon, 2004 NYC marathon. Qualified for 2011
Boston Marathon. Best 10k time 34:22. 2013 10k time 45:41 .
Musical instrument: cornet - high school band and orchestra, solo seat.
Favorite musical activity: for the time being, just a musical spectator.
Favorite musical groups: The Beach Boys, The Forrester Sisters – love that harmony.
Favorite book: Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. Miss those midnight movies!
Most recent good reads: Who Stole the American Dream, by Hedrick Smith; The Singularity is
Near, by Ray Kruzweil; Global Catastrophic Risks, Eds. Nick Bostrom and Milan M. Cirkovic.
Hobbies: Restoring daughter’s 1969 VW bug , woodworking, renovating house, windsurfing.
Most recent foreign travel: Germany, summer 2013, with Ms. Krishna and 13 MSJHS students.
