How do you want to learn them. We have two choices…..

UNIT AUnit A: Investigating Properties of Matter

Overview: The safe handling of chemicals, whether in the home or in the workplace, requires and understanding of the properties of pure substance and mixtures. Students will actively investigate the properties of a variety of samples of matter, including mixtures and solutions, elements and compounds encountered in everyday life. The atom as the basic building block of matter is introduced. Students also investigate the classification of elements on the periodic table.

Unit B: Understanding Energy Transfer TechnologiesOverview: Energy can be transferred by means of heat and by use of force or distance multipliers called machines. The optimal design of such energy transfer technologies is based upon an understanding of energy transfer technologies also takes into consideration the need for safety and for efficiency of these technologies, important to society.

Unit C: Investigating Matter and Energy in Living SystemsOverview: Life processes require the exchange of matter between living systems and the external environment. Students will investigate life processes at the organism and system levels, and extrapolate these processes to the cellular level. In closely studying the digestive and circulatory systems, students will understand that a healthy diet and lifestyle is crucial to their wellness.

Unit D: Investigating Matter and Energy in the EnvironmentOverview: Energy from the Sun sustains living systems and maintains equilibrium in the biosphere. In the biosphere, matter is recycled along natural pathways. However, the increasing human population, human activity, and increasing human use of energy and reliance on manufactured materials are having an impact on the movement of matter and energy in the biosphere. This raises global concerns about sustainability.

STUDENT RESPONSABILITIES ARE…..

WATCH YOUR MOUTH: Students will exhibit courtesy and respect toward all other students and staff at all times. Hateful comments concerning race, gender, sexuality, political views, appearance, or of any other type will not be tolerated; this applies to serious as well as “joking” comments.

KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF: Physical contact of any kind is not permitted. Violation of this rule will have sever consequences.

STAY IN YOUR SEAT: Do not walk around during class unless directed to do so. Have everything you need ready before class. This includes but is not limited to pencil sharpening, garbage and other supplies.

LEAVE FOOD AND BEVERAGES AT HOME: There is absolutely no food or beverages in this classroom. The only exception is water in a sealable container.

I NEED TO SEE YOUR EYES: Students are not permitted to be sleeping in class or texting. All eyes need to be on the speaker.

NOTHING GOES AIRBORNE: Nothing will go airborne in class at any time. This includes pens, papers and fellow classmates.

DO NOT SAY “SHUT UP”: THIS PHRASE HAS NO PLACE IN SCHOOL.

LATE WORK: Homework assignments may not be turned in late. You may use a homework pass or make prior arrangements.

MAKE-UP TESTS: If a student has an excused absence for a test day, he or she may make up the test by contacting teacher and making arrangement. I will not chase you to make up the exam.

ACADEMIC HONESTY: It is expected that students will use genuine, sincere, and fair means for the accomplishment of tests, assignments and projects. Students found plagiarizing, copying or cheating in anyway will receive a zero and you parent or guardians will be contacted. Repeat behaviors will result in involving the principle in the discipline plan.

Classroom Rules/ Expectations· Willing to listen to and respect the ideas and opinions of fellow classmates. Rude and inappropriate gestures will not be tolerated. When it is your turn to share with the class you must do so in a polite and courteous way.

· It is your responsibility to be punctual, as class will begin when the bell rings. You are expected to have notebook, writing materials, textbook and calculator everyday. Permission will not be granted to find supplies outside of the classroom. Those students that are arriving late will be recorded and dealt with on a individual basses.

· There will be no food or drinks during class time. You can provide yourself with a bottle of water, with a screw top.ABSOLUTELY NO ENERGY DRINKS, THEY WILL BE DUMPED IN THE SINK!

· WE ARE EMBARACING TECHNOLOGY, (ipods, laptops, tablets, phones)BUT IF IT BECOMES A PROBLEM YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO NOT ENGAGE IN THIS RIGHT!

· I will be available to help those who need it. It is your responsibility to catch up on missed assignments, notes or quizzes.

· With a positive attitude by everyone this class will be very enjoyable.

SCHOOL’S ATTENDANCE POLICY

THE SCHOOL’ ATTENDANCE POLICY IS AS STATED:Absences will be dealt with by phone calls home, parent/student/administration meetings, and finally withdrawal from the neglected course(s).· In excused absences from a course will result in a phone call  home from the Attendance Officer.· 8 in excused absences from a course will result in an invitation to a parent/student/administration meeting.· 10 in excused absences will result in student withdrawal from the neglected course. Please note: Excused absences are defined as:· Bus Related· Illness· Medical appointments· Dental appointments· Death in the immediate family· Religious Holidays· Emergencies· Field trips· Other absences sanctioned by school administration Regular and punctual attendance in classes is one of the most important contributing factors in the educational success of a student.  For this reason, we want our students in class and learning.   Those students who are unorganized or late are expected to learn to be more responsible for their education.   All students absent for any reason other than for those excused absences listed above will be considered inexcusably absent.  We highly encourage the students to organize the necessary permission to leave with their parent/guardian prior to being absent.  Responsibility for regular and punctual attendance rests with the students and their parents. 

WHAT WILL A DAY IN OUR CLASSROOM LOOK LIKE?

Entering classroom:You will enter the classroom without screeming , running or causing a ruckus. You will be asked to re-enter if this does not happen. You will then pick up handouts, hand in work , move your desk to the arranged seating plan.

MAKE SURE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR CLASS IS READILY AVAILABLE.Bellwork

Everyday there will be bellwork handed to you at the door by myself, or on the screen in the front of the classroom. When your desk is in place you will begin your bellwork in your science journals. You will use a clean page and write the date at the top. Sometimes it may be just to answer one or two questions and sometimes it may be a research question on the laptops. Will be handed into the blue bin on your way out of the clas.

Picking up Materials for the DayAny handouts will be in a red bin at the front of the class, make sure you grab whatever you need prior to the bell. If you are coming in late do not make a rukus and try to pick up the handouts, please wait until there is a break to raise your hand and do so.

Handing in HomeworkIf there is an assignment that you need to hand in, place it in the blue bin. If the bin is not there hold it and your bellwork until I ask for them as we may be referring to it during class. If you arrive late homework will cause a distraction, sign-in go to your seat and raise your hand during appropriate time.

Coming to attention.There will be times when I need quiet in the class, I will raise my hand. When you see this you are expected to stop your conversations, look at me, and raise your hand. We are ready to move on when everyone has raised their hand.

Arriving lateWhen you enter the room late you need not disturb the class. Sign you name in the late book. Only sign you own name. If you have note from office leave it in the book. Go directly to you seat. Keep all assignments until end of class.

Leaving the ClassroomWe will not be leaving the classroom until the class is dismissed with the bell. Do not pack up and leave class until I have dismissed you.

AbsenceOn the day you return form an absence you should arrive early to class. The first thing you will do is check classroom log, ask for slides from notes and missed work. If you have questions please ask them before class begins.

Extra Handouts.I will have a couple extra handouts. If you loose one then go to the extra folder and help yourself. If there is not any wait for appropraite time to ask.

Make up WorkIf you are trying to improve an assignment mark just re-hand in the assignment and attach a note saying you are trying to improve your mark.

Using the BathroomThe bathroom may only be used in emergencies. A pass is needed for leaving the class. Do not ask to go to bathroom or locker before the class begins; just go before you get to class. Anyone late for any reason is late.

THESE PROCEDURES MAY BE CHANGED OR ADDED TO BY MYSELF. ALL PROCEDURES WILL BE THOUROUGHLY REHEARSED AS A CLASS.
