PREFACE TO THE ‘ALL ABOUT’ SERIES OF BOOKS

As the name suggests the ‘All About’ series of books is a project wherein we aim to have community-written books on subjects of general and

special interest comprising every bit of information that may be relevant for the reader. The books would have a comprehensive, yet useful,coverage on the subjects that they cover. And the challenge is not only to have all this data in one place but doing so while ensuring readability

and comprehensibility of the content. The intention is to present data in a format which is easy to grasp. And, as far as possible, load the books

with analytical and practical examples.

We d on’t want to have bulky tomes after putting in all the hard work. We want to have well -structured texts wherein a user can

get to content that he/she needs with ease.

And, as already mentioned, these books would not be written by some erudite, idiosyncratic scholar holding a doctorate in the subject. Instead

these would be written by the end users themselves, the community, and are in this sense somewhat analogous to an open-source softwareproject. These would be something like a Wikipedia + Mutual Help forum + a structured, well-formed text. The last one is going to ensure that

we will be able to call the end-product a book. This open-source approach would ensure that in the end we have something that would be

more useful for the average reader than the erudite scholar. So be prepared with your inputs... because we’ve already begun writing these

books!

1. INTRODUCTION

1. 1 STRUCTURE OF THE BOOK

The most important thing that we need to take care of in a project like ‘All About Banking’ is the structure. Because, if we do not have the

contents in an intuitive structure, which a reader can easily comprehend and follow, the purpose of this effort would remain unfulfilled.

The best way to structure the core of the book, therefore, would be to base it on the generic structure of a bank. We devote the following

section to understanding the structure of a bank and with this we will begin our journey to understand the world of banking.

Apart from what will come out of the above, we will also have a look at the origin and history of banking, probably even going into the growth

of banking is specific regions and countries of the world. That apart, we also intend to look at the current industry scenario towards the end of

the project.

1. 2 STRUCTURE OF A BANK

Banks can be categorized in various ways and depending on their location and area of focus they would have different structures. In this

section, it would be best if we look at the structure of a universal bank. While we look at the various categorizations and types of banks in

detail later, let’s understand what a Universal Bank is briefly.
