Acting Principal’s Report

Welcome back to all staff and students for Term 4. I hope you all had a refreshing

holiday period with family and friends, enjoyed the many local and national sporting

finals that were on over the break, and are re-energised for the final Term of the year.

There are many busy weeks coming up on the calendar so it is important that everyone

notes down calendar dates and key events that they wish to be involved in.

Our major focus (as always) is on learning and improvement. These areas of a student’s

development are in focus even more this term, as students receive results, undertake examinations,

and are acknowledged with awards and recognition throughout this term for their efforts which is a

culmination of a hard year’s work. As staff, we’ll be working hard with students to get them to

perform at and above expected levels in assessment tasks and on learning outcomes. Of special

commendation are our results in the Australian Mathematics Competition published in this newsletter.

Our Performing Arts program has continued over the holiday break with students rehearsing for the

upcoming performance of “Alice in Wonderland”. This Irymple Secondary College production will

be held on Wednesday 28th October and Thursday 29th October starting at 7.00pm at the Mildura

Arts Centre. Please come along and support our wonderfully talented students and dedicated staff -

tickets can be purchased at the ISC Office or at the Arts Centre on the night. Adults $10 Children $5

Family $25.

We also have two matinee performances being held which will see our students performing in front

of audiences of district primary school students.

Acting Principal’s Report continued…

Our sporting program has also received strong accolades, with our school taking out the Junior

Shield at the recent interschool Athletics Carnival, then further success for students at regionals last

week culminating in Jordan Stainer, Julian Rayner and John Salatielu eligible for the State finals!

Congratulations to our three students who competed in regional golf championships last Friday. Well

done to Tarsha Hawley who won her section with 81; she now goes on to the Victorian

Championships. Lachie Timms and James Prictor also competed recording fantastic results.

Also over the Term 3 holidays our China Exchange students and staff members, Garry Costello, Jarrod

Kee and Kate Douglas continued their tour of our host sister school in China. We welcome Mia

Welsch, our new Southern Cross Exchange student from Germany and hope that she has a great

time at ISC and living in Sunraysia with host sister Emily Williams and her family.

Staffing

Congratulations to Ms Brodie Ahorn who has accepted a Term 4 contract to teach Mathematics to

our students.

A further congratulations to Ms Karen Boyce who has been appointed Acting Assistant Principal for

this final school term.

State Government announces Indicative Budgets

All schools across Victoria will be receiving extra funding

through their budgets for 2016. This was announced by the

State Government late last Term. Our school will receive a

boost in our funding for next year of just over $150,000 which is

expected to be used on implementing specialist programs to

improve student outcomes. The school is currently looking at

strategic ways we can utilise this extra funding for programs

and student support. Increases in school budgets across the

State have been variable from very small to very significant.

The greatest increases in funding for secondary schools will be

going to schools dealing with a high percentage of students

from low socio-economic/disadvantaged backgrounds, and

those with a high percentage of students entering secondary

school with lower than expected literacy and/or numeracy

skills. Primary schools will also receive more funding on

average across the State than secondary schools, to support

early years learning.

HTAV – History Teachers’ Association of Victoria – Winning

Prize

In the holidays, ISC History teacher Kara Taylor won a $20,000

prize for our school through the Latitude Group Travel which

can be used to subsidise students travelling to places of

historical significance. Our Humanities faculty are now

working through some scenarios as possibilities to access this

prize and fully support the further enrichment of history and

cultural awareness to our students’ lives.

School Council Meeting

The next scheduled school council meeting will be held on

Wednesday 21st October.

Finance Committee 6.00pm; Full committee 6.30pm.

Assistant Principal’s Report

Term 4

Who can believe we are three quarters of the way through the year! We have a lot happening in

Term 4 with the Alice in Wonderland School Production, Year 9 Surf Trip and Year 10 Pathways to PE

Trip, Interschool Basketball and Cricket as well as various other extra-curricular activities. However,

we must not forget the core business of teaching and learning.

Students are encouraged to understand and complete work to their best ability. Before we know it,

reports will need to be written. Homework club is offered after school for an hour every Wednesday

and Thursday. The school portal is used by all teaching staff to keep students and parents informed

of due dates for assessment tasks.

I encourage all students to make the most of all opportunities provided to engage in their schooling

and achieve success.

Year 10 Leadership Positions 2016

Next week we will be inviting our current Year 9 students to nominate themselves for one or more of

the Leadership positions in 2016.

School Captain and House Captain Candidates will need to prepare a speech.

If interested in applying, I suggest you begin by talking to the current leaders. We will also be calling

for Peer Mentors who will be required to attend a two day training course at the end of November.

Detailed Information will be given to students at the Year Level assembly on Thursday, 22nd

November.

Karen Boyce - Acting Assistant Principal Term 4

Year 8 Tasmania Camp

Last newsletter, the article about Year 8 camp was incorrectly attributed to Mrs

McClure, the Year 8 Coordinator.

The article was in fact written by Georgia Leutner and Edie Hopgood, Year 8

students who attended the camp.

Apologies for that, girls.

Mrs Rebecca McClure – Yr 8 Coordinator

Mia Welsch - Southern Cross Exchange student from Germany What do you like about Australia?

I love the warm weather, in Germany it hardly gets over 30°C in summer. Also

everyone is really relaxed and friendly towards new people and I had a

great welcome to Irymple. And I love most Australian animals like Kangaroos

and Koalas.

How is your German school different compared to here at Irymple?

In my school we don't have a school uniform and the classes are different.

We only have about 15 people in each class and between 6 and 8 classes

each day. Also we don't have a 2 week timetable and not such a big variety

in creative and practical subjects as you have at Irymple.

What has been your best experience in Australia so far?

A few weeks ago I was feeding a kangaroo which was also the first time I

saw a real life kangaroo and that was one of the main goals for my stay in

Australia. I never thought kangaroos are so fluffy.

Loddon Mallee Region Athletics Championships

Irymple Secondary College was well represented at the Loddon-Mallee Region Athletics carnival

held in Bendigo last Thursday October 8th with 24 competitors attending the meet. All competitors

must be commended on their behaviour and for performing so well, especially considering the early

start to the day for most of us who travelled by bus (we were on the road by just after 5:00am.) Two

students travelled down with parents on the morning of the competition.

We had three individual winners as well a number of podium finishes. Winners on the day were

As a result of their performances, Jordan, John and Julian (above) qualify for the State finals which

will b e held next Tuesday October 20th at the State Athletics Centre at Albert Park in Melbourne.

We would like to thank all competitors for their behaviour and effort throughout the day and

congratulate our winners for their success and wish them best of luck for the State Finals.

Loddon Mallee Region Golf Championships Congratulations to Tarsha Hawley of Yr 9 who won the Junior Girls competition at the

LMR Golf Championships held at Rich River Golf and Country Club Moama last Friday

9th October. Tarsha performed exceptionally well to win the stroke event with a total

of 81 off the stick which also gave her second place in the handicap event.

Congratulations as well to Lachie Timms of Yr 9 and James Prictor of Yr 7 who also

competed at the LMR championships. Lachie missed the cut to compete in the state

championships by 2 strokes while James came 3rd in the Handicap event. As a result

of her performance at Rich River, Tarsha qualified for the State Golf Championships

which will be played on Friday 30th October. Thanks to parents Brad Hawley and John

Prictor for taking the three students across to Moama for the competition.

Thank you for your cooperation.
