Alfred Eisenstaedt1898-1995

• One of the best known photojournalists of the 20th century.

• Born in West Prussia (now Poland)

• Spent the first years of his life photographing in Germany for AP.

• Emigrated to the United States in 1935.

Joseph Goebbels

Novemeber 29, 1954

Eisenstaedt photographed Goebbels, Hilter’s Minister of Propaganda, as he was surrounded by his aids. Having a “clubfoot” Goebbels seems displease with the fact he is being photographed.

• Was one of the first photographers to work for LIFE magazine.

• Had over 90 LIFE magazine cover photographs.

• Was considered the ideal photo-reporter, he was constantly ready for action.

• Photographed the effects of the war in Ethiopia.

The Graf Zeppelin being repaired over the South Atlantic. 1934

Eisenstaedt made this photograph from the top of the Zeppelin

as it made it’s journey to Rio de Janerio. He was only allowed,

by German officials, to make three photographs.

Puppet Show. Paris August 12,1963

A difficult assignment for Eisenstaedt. Paris had been photographed so many times by others. He had to do it his way. He shot two roll on the puppet show alone.

Portrait of Thomas Hart Benton. May 21, 1971

Eisenstaedt photographed Benton almost ever year starting in 1937. Benton was a famous painter who painted murals for the legislature in Kansas City.

Portrait of Erine Pyle

October 2, 1944

Pyle was a newspaper reporter who served on the front lines during WWII.

After the session Pyle wrote in Eisenstaedt’s autograph book. “I haven’t seen the pictures yet but if they’re as understanding as your presence while taking them, then they will be pleased.
