ED ITOR ’ S LETTER

“Sexy” is a word that comes up a lot in reference toMiami. Certainly one that Bravo starFredrik Eklund usesmore than once to describe his favorite spots in the city, where he’s justlaunched a new real-estate office. Faena District developer and art collector Alan Faena, meanwhile, reaches for the word “dream” to describe his favorite things inMagic City. Andboth words leap tomind for our cover star, Brazilian supermodelIsabeli Fontana, whomakesMiami her home-away-from-home. She

embodies that sexy dream of a city — also considered the unofficial capital of SouthAmerica — in this special Miami issue.

Secret sipsA sneak peek atMagic City’s

sexiest speak-easiesBy MARK ELLWOOD

AMATucked, Russian doll-style, in the heart ofJames Beard Award-nominated chef BradKilgore’s buzzy new Japanese joint, Kaido,is this even more exclusive, 8-seat venue.(The name Ama is in honor of Hokkaido’smermaid-like free divers, who scour theocean floor for sea urchins and pearls.)You’ll enter via a closet-sized anteroom,

where you’ll receive instructions foryour evening — there’s no re-entry, andstrictly no social media — before beingwhisked into the sanctum, where youcan sample cocktails and a raft of rare

Japanese whiskies. Hungry? Kilgore alsooffers a 16-course omakase-style supper

in the Design District space twice weekly.KaidoMiami.com

BODEGAThis unassuming taqueria has a

Superman-like secret identity. Come herefirst for affordable tortas, cooked up inan Airstream trailer and scarfed downat picnic tables. Once you’ve pregamed, head to the bathroom — or rather the

blue port-o-potty door in the backmarked “Baños.” Breeze past the urinalson the wall in the next room, and walkthrough yet another door: You’ll finally

enter the two-story speak-easy at the rear, decked out with overstuffed couches, rawwalls and a live DJ. Even better, the craftcocktails here are refreshingly affordable

— ringing up at no more than $13.BodegaSouthBeach.com

FOXHOLEThis beloved dive bar is deliberatelyhidden just off of Alton Road en routeto West Avenue; rule of thumb — if

you think you’re headed in the wrongdirection, keep going and look for a

lamp. The boîte (which opened nearlya decade ago) has managed to preserve

its mystique largely by focusing onlocals, turning Foxhole into a best-kept-secret-style bar. And no wonder, with itsjukebox, retro video games, pool tableand plentiful seating, this is a relaxed,after-hours alternative to the bottle-service scene. (The affordable happy

hour makes it a worthwhile launching padfor an evening, too.) There’s usually a hip-hop DJ, and retro movies play on the TVs.

The blue-eyed, 5-foot-10-inch stun-ner was also very savvy, and from anearly age invested in NYC real estate, famously buying an Upper West Sideapartment from Donald Trump Jr. in2010. (She has since flipped severalother NYC trophy condos for impres-sive profits.)

“I love buying and selling realestate,” she says with a sparkle. “Attimes I made more on real estate thanI did in modeling.”

While her mother eventuallyreturned to Brazil, she sent Fontana’sgrandmother to New York in herplace. “To make sure that I ate prop-erly and took care of myself,” the strut-ter recalls. “It’s a very Brazilian thing,to always be surrounded by family.”

Years later, Fontana finds herself ina similar position, living part-time ina beachfront Miami home with her16-year-old son (with model AlvaroJacomossi), Zion, who is attending anelite school in the city.

“I spend most of my time at midMiami Beach,” she says. “I love just

hanging by the ocean or roller-skatingand riding bicycles with my son alongthe beach.”

She’s also a fan of the city’s manyvegan and raw restaurants. “And beingfrom Brazil, I love getting an açai fromJuice & Java.” The devoted yogi (whoalso recently earned her teachingcertificate in t’ai-chi) practices daily athome or at Tropical Vinyasa on MiamiBeach. But her main priority remainsZion.

“I’m teaching my son how to beindependent,” explains Fontana, whonow divides her time between homesin São Paulo and the Magic City. “Heis learning how to make his own food,to take care of himself.” Her other son,Lucas (with actor Henri Castelli), is 12and lives in São Paulo, where he is alsosurrounded by family.

“I learned very early on how tomanage my life, but it was a totallydifferent experience when I had mychildren. At that point in my life, I wasnot only responsible for myself, butfor my two angels,” she says. “I am

Trying on all manner of heels wasgood preparation for Fontana’s rapidrise to catwalk fame. At age 13, shemade it to the finals of Elite ModelLook, an international modeling con-test, and a year later traveled to Parisand Milan (accompanied by her moth-er) to work as a model. By 16, she hadbecome the youngest model ever toappear in a Victoria’s Secret catalog;she would go on to become the face ofValentino, Versace and Ralph Laurenand star in campaigns and catwalks forthe likes of Chanel, Bulgari and Dolce& Gabbana.

“I worked every show, every brandand [my mother] was always withme while my brothers were back inBrazil,” says Fontana, who was thenliving in New York. “When I turned18, I told my mother that she could goback home, because I was pretty inde-pendent and had a boyfriend.”

trying to teach them how to balanceschool and life and be the best versionof themselves they can be.”

Fontana is also helping strangersbecome the best version of them-selves, via “Face to Face with IsabeliFontana” — a series of cooking, beautyand soon-to-come travel videos onher YouTube channel. The buddinginfluencer gives laid-back lessons onmaking gluten-free Brazilian pao dequeijo (cheese bread) and almondmilk, or jet-setting with ease. (Fontanarecommends always traveling withincense.)

The bilingual English and Portu-guese-language videos, which averageover 150,000 viewers each, radiatea sort of Goop-down-to-earth vibe, complete with hair and beauty tech-niques and glimpses from Fontana’sown keep-it-real life — she often doesher own makeup in the backseat of acar on her way to gala events.

In a video posted last spring, sheappeared with her husband, Diego“Di” Ferrero, a Brazilian rock ’n’ rollstar who gained fame for his duet withNelly Furtado (“All Good Things”).Lounging on their bed, the couplehappily answered personal questionsabout their relationship from someof Fontana’s 1.2 million Instagramfollowers.

“I suffered bullying, because yourfans hated me,” she joked with Ferrero.“We have such a beautiful relation-ship. I was always a very insecureperson. I always thought I was toothin, not well proportioned. And Dihas really helped me overcome myshyness and to be more confident inmyself.”

Fontana (who was also brieflyengaged to Bob Marley’s son Rohan

Marley) met Ferrero (her thirdhusband) at a Brazilian TV studio in2013, where they were both waiting toappear on a children’s program.

“I hit on him first,” she told a Brazil-ian reporter at the time. “I thought itwas beautiful how he treated a childon the set. He looked half sad, halflost. We are together, because he is themore rational side of the relationship, and I am the more sentimental.”

Fontana and Ferrero married inan intimate ceremony on a Maldivessandbar in 2016. The barefoot couplewas surrounded by a Maldivian band,a local preacher and a handful of theirfriends, all dressed in casual white.

The bride arrived on a boat for theceremony, wearing a white bikiniunder a sheer wedding dress thatfeatured hand-embroidered andintricately beaded white palm fronds. It was designed by Renato Thomaz, from the Brazilian bathing-suit brandAgua de Coco.

“I was doing their campaign, andasked them to make my weddingdress,” Fontana explains. “They hadnever done a wedding dress before butwere really excited about it. And thedress was so incredibly beautiful.”

Fontana has cameoed in two of Fer-rero’s music videos, including one for“Meu Bem,” in which she appears inshadow, dancing in a bikini. But rock’n’ roll and modeling gigs aside, she’smost comfortable spending time withher family.

CHARTERINGa chopper used to be the height of chicfor aweekend escape—Manhattan to Southamptonin 40minutes, anyone? But these days, it’s seaplanesojourns that are all the rage, not least fromMiami andespecially to theBahamas and the FloridaKeys. Aswiththe helicopter flights, it’s not aboutYOLObraggingrights and tartly hashtagged Instagramposts from thesky—or at least not just about those things. It’s alsoplain convenient, cutting downon transit time, trafficfrustrations andwasted hourswaiting in lines and oncommercial airline delays.

Blade, theHamptons helicopter service that launchedin spring 2014, began operating in South Florida thefollowingwinter, and the company reports that growth

has been exponential there over the last year. Lastwinter, it startedoffering regularly scheduledweekend service betweenMiami andPalmBeach, with #flyblade fans also chartering and crowdsourcing planes toBahamian destinations includingHarbour Island andBaker’s Bay.South Florida operator TropicOceanAirways sawgrowth of 31

percent from2017 to 2018. Clients rely on its services to avoid slow-moving lines of cars on the one-lane highwaydown to theKeys, and toskip long security and immigrationwaits for theBahamas. Tropic offersscheduled flights to several Bahamian islands and can handle chartersanywherewithin a 300-mile radius ofMiami and Fort Lauderdale. And justwhere are thewell-heeled headed on their seaplane vacays?

Here are themost exciting newdestinations in theBahamas and theKeys drawing folks south fromMiami for some splashyR&R.

ESCAPES

SEAPLANE SAFARIFly the splashy skies fromMiami to theseweekend getaways

AFTER years of development, Nassau’s $4.2billion, 1,000-acre BahaMar is now fully upand running. The final major hotel piece, a237-room Rosewood resort —which joined a299-room SLS and an 1,800-room GrandHyatt—debuted in the middle of last year. Andnow, luxe BahaMar Residences are for sale, ranging from one-bedroom studios to eight-

bedroomwaterside villas. (And what better way toarrive at your new pied-á-plage than by seaplane?)Those who buy into the residences will enjoy

special access to Baha Mar’s extensive amenities, not least of which is its 100,000-square-foot casino,a private island, a 213-foot superyacht, top-flightshopping and a club co-founded by Tiger Woodsand Justin Timberlake. Among the hot boîtes atBaha Mar, Skybar (Nassau’s only hotel rooftopbar) and Carna (the first spot outside Italy for

Tuscan meat master Dario Cecchini), both at theSLS, are the latest arrivals. They join a PhilippeStarck-designed Katsuya— and more than 40 otherrestaurants, bars and lounges in the development.Beyond Nassau, the quieter pleasures of the

Out Islands also have much to recommend themthese days. On the pink-sand enclave of HarbourIsland— known as the home (or at least one ofthe homes) of style-setters Diane von Furstenbergand Elle Macpherson— Coral Sands Hotel unveileda major makeover of its beachfront cottages andMoroccan-inflected restaurant. Great Exuma’sGrand Isle Resort and Spa, for its part, just openeda new beach club last month. The club’s indoor-outdoor restaurant, infinity pool on Emerald Bayand plush cabanas are available to hotel guestsas well as by day pass, making it a perfect spot toseaplane into for the quickest of getaways.

TheBahamas

THEstring of islands stretchingsoutheast from the tip of Floridahave seen a surge of developmentin the past several years, onlyfleetingly paused by 2017’sHurricane Irma.

IslaBellaBeachResort—onKnights Key, at the east end of

SevenMile Bridge—opened earlier thismonth. The top-flight, white-clapboardhotel sits on 24 secluded, waterfront acresand boasts five pools, four dining spots(including a flagship Italian restaurant),almost amile of private coastline and itsown beach. That’s all for the guests ofjust 199 rooms, each of them decorated insoothing shades of white and blue, withocean views tomatch. A 4,000-square-foot spa and 1,000-square-foot fitnesscenter debut nextmonth.A few islands back towardMiami,

HawksCay reopened onDuckKey lastsummer after a yearlong, post-hurricaneclosure and $50-million refit of its

177 rooms, lobby and restaurant. Theredesign takes inspiration from theworkofMorris Lapidus, theMiamiModernarchitect who created the originalhotel here. The reimagined propertynow features an expanded adults-onlyzonewith its own pool, bar, restaurant, outdoor lounge and firepit.Even closer to themainland,Bungalows

KeyLargoopened late last year on1,000 feet of shoreline as the region’sfirst all-inclusive hotel. Sensing theseaplane trend, the resort has partneredwith StanielAir to create a three-nightpackage that offers transfers to and fromFort Lauderdale ExecutiveAirport.Meanwhile, the 200-roomBaker’sCayResortKeyLargo, part ofHilton’s CurioCollection, emerged in February on 13acres of a former pineapple plantation.Notable among its offerings: day-tripexcursions toKeyWest orDryTortugasNational Park, with transport aboard a—you guessed it— seaplane.
