Principal’s Report
Wow! What a fantastic and busy term, in the past two weeks we have
had Grandparents day, NAIDOC week, Sculpture in the Paddock and
Treasure Island day. There have been lots of exciting events and
learning taking place at YPS this term. It was fantastic to see so many
grandparents and special people at school and fantastic to see so
many of them participate in our quiz day and afternoon activites.
The weather wasn’t with us on Friday for the NAIDOC Celebrations
but all the children had a fantastic afternoon all the same. The
smoking ceremony and Aboriginal dancers were a highlight for many.
I have emailed Roads and Maritime services to hopefully get some
bike helmets dropped off to make our exchange early next term as
they ran out of helmets on Friday.
Last Friday afternoon I enjoyed heading out to Cooma cottage to see
Sculptures in the Paddock. It was the first time we had some of our
YPS students included in the project. Gabrielle Henshaw, Pearl Fuller
and Nimue Ford all produced some beautiful sculptures and as of
yesterday students works have collectively sold for over $1500. A
wonderful opportunity for our students.
I am looking forward to going on my first school camp at YPS.
Year 5 & 6, Ms Bird, two dads and myself are heading off to
Jindabyne Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I know we will have a
great time with lots of activities and adventures to enjoy.
Kind Regards
Michelle Fahey

Cartooning Workshops
During weeks 7 and 8 Yass Public was lucky enough to have a professional cartoonist come into every year 3-6 classroom and run a cartooning workshop. Simon (better known as ‘Nomis’, Simon backwards) was fantastic with the students and shared his experience with drawing in a way that encouraged the kids to build on their creativity. Nomis also shared the ‘Envelope of Awesome’ which is a monthly subscription service that mails out a packet of fun to the subscriber. It is designed to encourage creativity, assist kids to learn how to draw and also show them that there are many different activities that they can get involved with that are away from technology. If you would like to find out more please head to his website www.envelopeofawesome.com or email [email protected]. I can highly recommend these resources as an inspiration to build creativity in your child. If you see ‘Nomis’ around Yass, be sure to say “Hi”.

Volleyball for Years 3-6 For the whole of this term we have had sports coaches from outside the school come in and teach the students about volleyball. Alongside this they also got the kids to play many fun warmup games that were very enjoyable. Some of the shots that we were taught were the serve, dig and set. Thanks to the teachers that came in each Thursday for the term, it was especially enjoyable to do a sport that we have not had much experience with.
High School Transition Transition has begun. Last week, our year 6 students, eagerly awaited the arrival of Mrs Sandra Hiscock and Ms Ree Nicholson. Mrs Hiscock is the Principal of Yass High School and Ms Nicholson is the incoming Year 7 - year advisor. They came to speak to the Year 6 students about the transition process along with all the subjects and opportunities that await them upon arrival at Yass High School. Students were told about the professional standards in the trade rooms, the electives that they will trial, as well as sports, representative opportunities, debating, public speaking and many more fun and engaging subjects and experiences open to students. Next term, the year 6 students will be involved in the revamped transition program. High School teachers will join us here at Yass Public to observe, and teach the students. They will also engage in a joint Literacy unit that all Year 6 students in the district will be undertaking. This unit will begin in Year 6 and will continue into Year 7. Some of these lessons for this unit will be taught at the high school in their open learning area classrooms.
Stage 3 Camp Yesterday Mrs Fahey and myself took 66 students to Jindabyne. We are having a great time and look forward to showing you all the photos and telling you of all the activities that we have done. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the two amazing dads that have volunteered their time to join us on this camp and have made this experience available to the children. Mr Darren Banfield and Mr Allan Stuart, I thank you. Bethany Bird
NAIDOC Celebration Day
Last Friday the 15th of September saw Yass Public School attend the NAIDOC Celebration Day at Victoria
Park. It was a very exciting event filled with lots of wonderful experiences for our students. Our choir partici-
pated in a joint choral performance with Berinba to welcome all of our local schools to the event. We were
very privileged to witness a traditional smoking ceremony and dances performed by some indigenous identi-
ties. It was wonderful to see some of our school students as well as our principal, Mrs Fahey, participating in
a dance activity.
After these more formal events the students then split into their classes to explore a range of activities and
local services and their displays. There was face painting, cricket, football, painting on canvas, sampling of
bush tucker foods like crocodile, emu and kangaroo. The fire brigade demonstrated a smoke tent,
boomerang making and throwing, bead stringing, Landcare, as well as many other displays and activities.
It was fantastic to see the children engaging with high school students, indigenous elders and other local
services people to explore what the exciting afternoon had to offer.
A big thank you to the Binit Binit Learning Community for planning and presenting this fabulous event!

Parent/Teacher Interviews
Thanks to all parents who caught up with their child’s teachers last week. Each teacher had many
bookings, and it was great to see so many interested parents. We would be pleased to hear if you could
see any way to improve the process of the interviews. The evening seemed to flow very smoothly.
Parent Survey
We have had a great response to our school survey but would like the feedback and input from every
family. A family needs to only respond to the survey once as it is the same survey on all the links. Students
and staff are currently completing surveys too. If you haven’t already completed the survey I have
included the link below.

Sculpture in the paddock
On Friday the 15th of September at 6.15pm “Sculpture in
the Paddock” was opened at Cooma Cottage. This was the
culmination of a great deal of work and fascinating
activities for our three students who were involved with
the event this year.
Nimue Ford, Pearl Fuller and Gabrielle Henshaw had
spent some time at Yass High School completing their
sculptures and writing their artist statements which were
to be included with the display of their sculpture. On the
Thursday they accompanied the high schools students’
to assist in presenting the displays of their work.
Guests were welcome from 5pm on the evening to attend
the exhibition and to also view the sculptures that were
within the paddock.
Yass Public School would like to extend a big thank you to
Miss Amy Watson, the Visual Arts teacher at Yass High
School who coordinated the event and made it such a
valuable learning experience for our students.

Science day
On Wednesday 13th September, we went to Yass High
School to study Geology. We had so much fun walking
around the room and looking at all the different
types of rocks, minerals & crystals including;
Sandstone, Limestone, Obsidian, Pumice, Marble &
many more. We had to observe the rocks & figure out
if they were either Sedimentary, Igneous or
Metamorphic. We surprised ourselves by getting all
of the answers right! We will definitely be going
there again next term.

PBL Reward Day
As many of you would know, the theme of this term’s Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program has
been “Treasure Island”. Mrs Barton has been encouraging students to earn YAZZAs by showing the
expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Participation, for their chance to win treasure at each assembly.
The goal was to earn 6000 YAZZAs across the school in order to win a whole school reward – a feat that
they easily reached.
On Tuesday students were awarded their prize in the form of a Treasure Hunt. Dressed in pirate costumes
and talking with accents, students set about cracking a code that would lead them to a hidden treasure. In
peer support groups students completed activities in classrooms around the school in return for clues.
These activities included a three-legged race, completing pirate puzzles, generating pirate names, making
pirate hats, walking the plank, translating pirate sayings, designing a treasure map, making a boat, creating
a wanted poster, taking photos, and pinning the treasure on the map. The students had a wonderful time
racing around the school, and the staff were especially proud of the way they worked together to complete
tasks. Congratulations to Team 4 who were the first team to crack the code and find the treasure buried in
the infants sandpit.
