A Message from the Revd Canon Margaret DeanOur Priest-in-Charge

Welcome to Helen

I am delighted to announce the arrival of The Revd Helen Rengert, who has been appointed as InterimAssociate Priest in the Reepham and Wensum Valley Team Ministry. Helen was licensed for this role forone year by the Bishop of Lynn at a service in Sparham church on 14th May.As you may remember, it has always been planned that our new benefice of 12 parishes would be served bytwo clergy: the Team Rector and the Team Vicar. Until a permanent appointment is made, Helen will beresponsible for the pastoral care, services, weddings, baptisms and funerals in the parishes of Bylaugh,Elsing, Gt Witchingham, Lyng, Sparham and Weston Longville. I continue to be responsible for the other sixparishes and we will work together too across the whole benefice.Helen’s home is in Spixworth, so we are very glad that we have been able to arrange for her to have anoffice at the Bircham Centre in Reepham Market Place. You will no doubt see her about in the next few weeks. We hope she will be very happy working with us.Please contact her as follows:

The Bircham Centre, The Market Place, Reepham NR10 4JJEmail: [email protected]

Interviews for the new Team Rector were held in May and at the time of writing we are waiting to hear theoutcome.

We are all living through a period of significant change, in our church life locally and also in our country. Our Archbishops have written to all the parishes and chaplaincies across the country asking us to renew ourcommitment to pray not only for each other, but also for those who are standing for election and for thosewho are elected. (The complete letter is available to read on the Diocese of Norwich website: enterArchbishops’ Pastoral Letter in the search box). They remind us that ‘the deep virtues and practices of love, trust and hope, of cohesion, courage and stability are not the preserve of any one political party orworldview, but go to the heart of who we are as a country in all its diversity’. They ask us to set asideapathy and cynicism, and to do what we can to participate for the common good, and especially to use ourvote!

June begins with the Day of Pentecost on Sunday the 4th - the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit. It isthe day of new beginnings in the church and the day to thank God with all of our being for the Spirit’sinspiration, courage, guidance and strength for every day. More than any other year, with so muchchanging around us, this is a moment to celebrate God’s eternal commitment to all people, and God’sengagement with our world and all our lives through the Holy Spirit. We are simply invited to get involvedin the task with him. Thank you for all you do.

Something different happened inAlderford Church

On Sunday 30 April we had a new type ofservice at Alderford, replacing our traditionalcommunion service. This was the first of anexperiment that we hope will continue. We learned some new and vibrant hymns, with our virtuoso Tim on his guitar and thehelp of our choir. With carefully chosenprayers, reflections and readings this was atruly spiritual and enjoyable experience.Everyone that I have spoken to found this arefreshing change and agreed that weshould have more variation in our worship. While knowing exactly what will happenwhen we go to church can be comforting, many will find a bit of variation stimulatingand interesting. Thank you very much toTim for all the hard work of putting the newideas together. We hope this may encourage more people(and some younger ones) to come and joinus on the occasional Sunday. We would loveit if others also come forward and share newideas with us.Watch this space.

Viola Ross-Smith of the BTO made an impassioned defence of the reputation of ‘seagulls’. It just isn’ttrue that they are evil, greedy birds. We may think that there are plenty of gulls around locally, andcertainly they are considered a pest in some areas, yet several species are of conservation concern. The Herring Gull is Red Listed, and the Lesser Black Backed Gull, is Amber Listed. Some work has beendone on urban gulls that shows that although nesting on rooftops they actually spend very little time inthe towns, heading off to feed in the countryside. Some excellent graphics allowed us to watch theflight of a gull from its nest, gaining height in thermals and travelling to a distant field to follow theplough. It topped up its earthworm feed by stopping in an estuary on its return journey for ragworms, but at no point was it interested in chips or ice cream. In late March members visited Hoe Common. David Knight explained the conservation work that is on-going. To keep down the spread of bracken, an area is being fenced to allow grazing by some NWTponies. Robins and Chiffchaffs were everywhere . The gorse was in bloom and Long-tailed Tits were inthe bushes with beaks full of nesting material. A Great-spotted Woodpecker posed right at the top of atree. On the road section of the walk we looked out for Buzzards and saw six circling high above us.Some of the group saw a Kingfisher as it bombed through along the Whitewater. On the lake twoGreat-crested Grebes were performing their symmetrical dance while the Mute Swans rested on thebanks. Tufted Ducks ,Moorhens,Greylags, Canadas grazed and a few Mallards were all present.

Down Memory LaneContinuing our new series of articles about life in the three villages in years gone by.

Many parishioners will remember Arthur Hawes who was our Rector from 1976 - 1992.He writes about his time working and living here.

The Wider Church

It has often been said 'Do not do separately, what you can do together'. This is an ideal'mantra' for the wider church and the Ecumenical movement which seeks to bring togetherpeople of all Christian denominations and to work together with people of other faiths. In theNorfolk countryside there has nearly always been a willingness to work across thedenominations because often the only place of worship, without going to the nearest town, isthe parish church. This was certainly true of the Pilgrim group. When we arrived two of thechurchwardens were from other churches. Brian Copelin was a Methodist and churchwardenat Swannington and Ken McVeigh was a Catholic and churchwarden at Alderford. Ken workedwith Ann Copplestone and Brian with Alfred Jordan.

Additionally we were joined by Coen and Willemyn Van Beuningen. Willemyn is Catholic andCoen Lutheran. As I wrote in article number 9, during the summer holidays in the fieldopposite Swannington church where Margaret and Steve Griggs live, there was a Youth campwhich was run by the Diocesan Youth Officer. Interestingly there were young people fromdifferent world religions. One year there were some from the Moslem faith and we arranged aservice in the church which combined both Christianity and Islam. We began with a cross onthe altar and finished with an Islamic emblem. Mr. Warnes who lived with his wife in KettsLane, told me it was the best thing I had ever done!!

Recently I was in Oxford which is where I was born and went to school. It is also where myparents are buried in the churchyard at St. Thomas' which is near Oxford station. When I wentto church there as a boy with my Mother and Father the tradition was high Anglican. Today itwould be called 'up the candle'.I was surprised to find that now the church is shared with the Greek Orthodox Christians in thecity who hold regular Sunday services there. As well as being surprised, I was also pleased thatthe ancient medieval church is being well used by both Anglican and Orthodox Christians. Theservices are not shared and each has their own specific time for worship over the weekend. InGaywood, King's Lynn, where we moved from Attlebridge, the church and all the facilities wereshared with the Methodists and it was different because this included shared worship.

Why is there this emphasis on the unity of the churches? Quite simply it is because we findJesus in chapter 17 of St. John's gospel praying for unity. For long enough there has beendivision and disagreement among the churches and never has it been more important tocooperate and work together than now. The Church can hardly encourage the world to unite, end wars and work together for peace, if it is disunited itself. I thank God that the PilgrimGroup of parishes led the way and opened its doors to everyone.

PAT’S POEM

THE TRAIN

Life is a very long journeyJust like a ride on a train

With lots of stations along the trackBut this is a train that never comes back!

It often seems quite a bumpy old rideSometimes the train breaks down!

That’s when we feel we‘d like to get outIt would be a mistake, I have no doubt!

We have to keep going at all costWe don’t know what’s round the next bend!

Even though we feel lonely and lostWe must stay on the train till the end!

If we jumped off at the wrong stationWe’d miss the whole point of our lives

We’d never find out what is waiting for usWhen our train arrives at the terminus!!

Nature Notes 8: The Chalk Grassland on Alderford Common

If “brownfield sites” can simplistically be defined as ones created by past industrial/commercial activities, thenparadoxically one of the greenest parts of the parish would qualify! Until about seventy years ago the marl piton Alderford Common was a busy industrial landscape as marl (a very chalky clay) and chalk were dug out andstacked in alternate layers with charcoal in the cone shaped centre of the lime kiln then fired to produce lime tobe spread on the fields. The kiln was worked until the second world war by Mr Munford who lived in Upgate.

The grassland that grew in the disused marl pit contains a number of plant species thatare only found in chalk rich soils. In the whole of eastcentral and north Norfolk these soil conditions are onlyfound in three sites: here on Alderford Common, atRingstead Downs and Warham Fort. On all three of thesesites calcium-loving plants form a distinctive andcharacteristic community including species such as wildstrawberries and the pyramidal orchid.

Five other species of orchid have also been recorded in the marl pit : common spotted orchid with white – palemauve flowers dotted and lined with crimson and darkly spotted leaves areparticularly abundant in the bottom of the steep sided “valley” (locally known as“orchid canyon” ) at the east end of the marl pit. Also inbottom of the “canyon” can be found the closely relatedearly marsh and southern marsh orchids which do not havespots on their leaves. Bee orchids which have flowers thatclosely mimic the bodies of bees and twayblades whichhave broad leaves and yellow-green flowers can both be

found in the main part of the marl pit.

“Orchid Canyon” had become very overgrown with hawthorn and black thorn scrub, until last autumn and winter conservation volunteers spent several days removing thescrub there. Their labours have been rewarded because one rather special andparticularly unusual looking plant, which I had not seen on the common for severalyears, called adder’s tongue, has suddenly sprung up where the scrub was removed, now that light can reach the ground layer just to the north of the path in the middle ofthe valley. Adder’s tongue is not a flowering plant. It is a species of fern more closely related to bracken thatto higher plants. It has a single, undivided, curved, frond surrounding a spore-bearing central spike.

“Orchid Canyon” was where the most bizarre event I have ever witnessed on the commons took place someyears ago. I was quietly ringing birds when a whole coach full of people trouped across the marl pit carrying bagsand picnic baskets. A little later the idyllic peace of a sunny summer’s afternoon was shattered by the “bang……bang…. bang” of small arms fire. I crept very stealthily through the undergrowth and crawled, with greatcaution, to peer over the edge of the valley. There beneath me, sportingspurred boots, chaps, gun belts and complete with stetsons a wild westernshoot-out was being re-enacted, with six-gun toting cowboys firing at eachother along the canyon. When they left, not only was the valley NOT strewn with corpses but therewas not a scrap of litter to be seen. As the orchids had died down by thenand the bird breeding season was over, I reflected that although rather arather unusual form of “amenity recreation” ,the visit by thirty plus wild westenthusiasts had done no harm at all. I wondered if perhaps they had seenme catching wild birds just to put tiny aluminium rings on their legs, theywould have considered me to be every bit as strange as I had found thatmemorable shoot -out at Alderford’s very own version of the OK coral.
