TERM 3 WEEK 5 22 August 2018

We are now halfway through Term 3. With External Validation and Education Week dominating
our thoughts so far this term, it has slipped away quickly. The great news is that we are starting to
see longer days and it is getting easier to get out of bed in the morning.
Yesterday I accepted the permanent position of Principal, Albury Public School. I am very
excited to have been the successful applicant and look forward to a long and happy time at
Albury Public School. Many thanks to all the staff, students and parents/carers who have been so
supportive and encouraging since I began here at the end of January. We have achieved so
much already and I look forward to continuing to build a good school into a great school.
Mrs Karen Tanner has also accepted the permanent position of School Administration Manager
following recruitment. Karen’s extensive experience and enthusiasm for the role will be an asset
to the school and the fabulous staff we already have in the front office.
We are currently undertaking a review of student break times in order to optimise student
wellbeing and preparedness for learning. The review will consider when lunch and recess should
be eaten, as well as the timing and duration of student breaks. To ensure that we consider the
needs and preferences of our families, we have put together a very short (3-minute) survey. We
would greatly appreciate the input of as many families as possible. Please complete the survey
by following the link below by 3pm next Wednesday 29 August.

This Friday is the last week of the winter PSSA competition. Students will play their last games and
selections will begin shortly for the summer competition. Well done to all of the students and
teachers/coaches who participated in this year’s competition, quite often under cold and wet
conditions.
Happy Term 3 hump week.

Book Week – Character Dress up Day
Book Character Costume Day: Remember the lapathon and Book Parade have
been combined. So regardless of the weather please come to school dressed as a
favourite book character on Thursday 23 August.
Book Fair:
As part of our Book Week celebrations the library is
hosting a Scholastic Book Fair. This will occur from Tuesday 28
August to Wednesday 5 September. The books will be
available for viewing by the children from 28 August. When
children come to the library for their weekly library lessons they
will have the opportunity to look at the books. They will be able
to then take home a "wish list" for parents to view. Purchasing
of books will occur the following week. The library will be open to parents from 8.30 to 9 am in
the morning and after school to 4 pm.

Premier’s Reading Challenge:
The 2018 Challenge is in its final stages. It closes for students on Friday 31 August (midnight).
Students must complete their online Student Reading Records by this date. I then have a week
to finalise the students' Student Reading Records. No extensions are possible.
A number of children still need to complete the Challenge, so keep up the excellent
effort. Please keep entering your reading logs on-line. Remember if you have a
problem or have a print copy of your reading log please see me as soon as possible.

At the end of last term a group of boys went to Holbrook for
The Tony Lockett Shield. The boys played extremely well and
won every single game played. The other teams played really
strong football as well.
At the start of term 3 the boys went off to play in Wagga to
play their local team, Lake Albert. This was a very difficult
game and unfortunately the team just lost. Lake Albert worked
very well together and had a very good backline so we didn’t
score as many goals as they did.
Thank you to Mr Takle and all of the parents who helped with transport .

3/4CH Term 3 Science
We made soil solutions by putting some soil in a jar or container and adding water. After
adding the water lots of the soil solutions looked murky and muddy. We waited a week to
see what would happen. After a week, the soil had settled to the bottom and some things
had floated to the top. We drew annotated diagrams of our soil solutions.
This term, our Science topic is
“Beneath our feet”. We have been
learning about what’s beneath
our feet, which is rocks and soil!
Some of us brought in rock and
soil samples.
We examined the soil
samples and recorded
what we could see and
feel. We also touched it
and noted what we
could hear.
Come dressed as a farmer for our ‘Farmer Friday’
Date: Friday 31 August
Who: House Captains
Cost: Gold Coin Donation
Students are invited to come to school dressed as something to represent farmers, the
country, drought or rain.
Ideas include wearing blue denim, a flannelette shirt, dressing as a farm animal or come
dressed as a raindrop!
Money raised will be donated to the
Burrumbuttock Hay Runners, who are proudly
supported by the Rotary Club of Sydney.
During lunch on Farmer Friday, students will
be invited to participate in the Coonamble
Rain Dance Challenge to raise awareness for
this small farming community in Central West
NSW, who are holding a Rain Dance ball to
highlight the impact of drought on mental
health and help bridge the city-country
divide.
