PARAMETERS AND TESTING METHODS

Test Criteria Description Units

Weight per unit area A sample of at least 500 cm2 is weighed, preferably g/m2

to DIN 53103 and ISO 536 with the format 200 x 250 mm.

Thickness to ISO 534 The determination is carried out using calipers with 2 cm2 mm jaws at 25 kPa contact pressure.

Breaking load At 15 mm wide and 100 mm long strip is subjected to an increasing N/15 mmDIN 53112 part 1 vertical load. The force at the moment the strip tears is the breaking load. width It is measured both longitudinally and transversely.

Bursting pressure A 10 cm2 paper sample is stretched over a rubber membrane. N/cm2

DIN 53141 part 1 A constantly increasing force is applied and the pressure at the moment of bursting is measured.

Gurley Test Measurement of the time taken to fi lter 100 ml air at a pressure sASTM-D726 of 31 mm water column and a fi lter area of 1.56 cm2.

Air permeability The amount of air passing through the fi lter at a differential pressure L/m2sDIN 53887 of 2 mbar is measured.

Filtration time The time taken to fi lter 100 ml prefi ltered, distilled water (20 °C) through a fi lter sHerzberg area of 10 cm2 at a constant pressure of 50 mm water column is measured.

Filtration time The time taken to fi lter 14 ml distilled water (20 °C) through a freely sDIN 53137 suspended and completely soaked quadrant-folded 125 mm diameter round fi lter paper is measured.

Capillary rise The height, which a 15 x 250 mm paper strip, whose narrow side mmDIN 53106 (Klemm) is immersed in prefi ltered distilled water (20 °C), becomes wet after 10 or 30 minutes.

Retentivity Testing the retention capability with precipitates of iron (lII) hydroxide, visualDIN 53138 lead sulfate, calcium oxalate and barium sulfate. assessment

Ash Content Weighing the residue after 10 g fi lter paper is ashed in %DIN 54370 a platinum crucible.

Separating performance The paper is sprayed with NaCI aerosol <1 μm (maximum 0.3-0.5 μm). %BS 4400 Any aerosol passing through the paper is determined photometrically.

Resins and fats 20 g paper are extracted with dichloromethane according mg / 100gDIN 54354 to the Soxhlet method.(dichloromethane extraction)

Wet strength A fi lter test area of 14.5 cm2 is tested to distruction by applying a constantly mm water increasing water column. column

Water absorption Determined by the differential weighing of a paper with an area of 100 cm2 g/m2

(plant standard) Weight 1 = dry weight Weight 2 = weight after immersing the sample in distilled water for 1 minute and removal of the excess surface water between two grade FP591 fi lter papers. (Weight 2 - Weight 1) x 100 = water absorption.

— Made of super-refi ned cotton linters and cellulose; acid-washed.

— α-cellulose content above 95 %.

— For analytical applications, routine quantitative and /or gravimetric procedures.

Gravimetric Analysis. Type of quantitative analysis that involves the precipitation of a compound that can be weighed

and analysed once dried.

For critical fi ltering processes, we recommend hardened, ashless fi lters, which have greater resistance to both humidity

and aggressive chemical components (Grade: FP1505 - FP1506 - FP1507).

Ashless fi lters (approx. 0.004 %), recommended for quantitative analysis and routine gravimetric tests.

— Double layer:

• Cellulose layer: enables a great quantity of liquids

to be absorbed.

• Polyethylene layer: totally waterproof.

— Once used, disposable without any harm to the environment,

it can be incinerated (the polyethylene layer does not melt,

but burns).

Affords total protection in the laboratory, due to its double layer: a layer of cellu-lose that absorbs liquids and a waterproof polyethylene layer that prevents liquids from reaching the protected surface.

NOTES FOR HANDLING

• The absorption is always slightly greater along the fi bres. The work should be carried out in the direction

of the fi bres. This is indicated by the 470 or 600 mm long edge of the sheet.

• Grades “a” and “b” differ in thickness only! The performance in resolution is the same.

For two-dimensional chromatography the “b” grades are recommended.

— All papers are made of pure cellulose and are free from any toxic substances, which might interfere

with the growth of seeds.

— Suffi cient moisture is stored for the whole duration of the test.

— The papers have an open pore structure for a high degree of water absorption, but the roots

are not able to grow into the paper.

— Coloured papers with higher contrast to the rootlets for easier evaluation.

— The pH of the papers is between 6,0 and 7,5.

— Some papers are available as pleated strips for ensuring a better contact between seeds and substrate,

and for a better separation of the individual seeds.

— All seed testing papers meet the ISTA and AOSA rules.

— Broad range of papers for the various germination methods TP, BP and PP (1).

Recommended for the reliable evaluation of seeds.

GERMINATION TEST PAPER

(1) ISTA methods:

• TP (top of paper)

The seed is placed on one or more layers of paper and then allowed to

germinate in a Copenhagen tank, Petri dish or incubator.

• BP (between paper)

The seeds are placed between two horizontal layers of paper or are rolled

up in vertical standing rolls of paper.

• PP (pleated paper)

The seeds are placed between the folds of a paper strip folded

like a piano accordion. The pleated strips are placed in a plastic box

and kept uniformly moist by a surrounding wrapping strip.

PARAMETERS AND TESTING METHODS

Test Criteria Description Units

Pore size One dry membrane fi lter and one wetted with a special liquid are subjected μm to continuously increasing pressure in a Coulter Porometer; in both cases the air fl ow through the membrane is measured.

Bubble point The membrane fi lter is wetted completely with water or isopropanol barDIN 58355 part 2 (PTFE membranes) and a continuously increasing pressure is applied to theASTM F 316 inlet side until air bubbles appear at the outlet side. The bubble point correlates directly with the pore size and can be used to check the integrity of the fi lter.

Water Flow rate The time taken for a certain amount of prefi ltered deionized water ml/min/cm2

DIN58355 part 1 (or ethanol for PTFE fi lters) to pass through the membrane fi lter is determined at a vacuum of 0.9 bar.

Air fl ow rate The time taken for the fi ltration of a defi ned volume of air (e.g. 100 ml) ml/min/cm2

at a pressure of 3 mbar through a fi lter area of 6.45 cm2.

Thickness The determination is carried out using callipers with 2 cm2 jaws μm and a contact pressure of 0.1 bar (100 g/cm2).

Wetting A membrane fi lter with a diameter of 50 mm is placed on water. s The time taken for it to become completely wetted is measured.

Burst pressure A 10 cm2 membrane sample is stretched over a rubber membrane. barDIN 53 141 part 1 A constantly increasing force is applied and the pressure at the moment of bursting is measured.

Extractable components A membrane fi lter is weighed, placed in boiling water for 30 minutes, dried %(loss in weight) and then reweighed. The loss in weight is a measure of the extractableDIN 58 355 part 6 component fraction.

Bacterial challenge test A medium containing test bacteria is fi ltered through the membrane fi lter VisualDIN 58 355 part 3 (microorganism density 107 microorganism/cm3). After an incubation period assessmentASTM D 3863 of 72 hours the fi ltrate must show no signs of bacterial growth. Test bacteria: 0.15 μm - Burkholderia cepacia 0.20 μm - Brevundimonas diminuta 0.45 μm - Serratia marcescens

Checking During the sterilization process test strips with living bacterial spores are Visualthe sterilization applied to the individually packed membranes. These are then incubated assessmentmethod with in a nutrient solution. After 7 days no turbidity (= bacterial growth) shouldbioindicators be visible. DIN 58 948 part 8 Test spores: Ethylene oxide treatment - Bacillus subtilis Gamma radiation - Bacillus pumilus
