Pastor Tom’s message How about some good religion in our politics? As we enter this month we realize that we have some seriously contested political elections ahead of us. It has been my experience that a healthy understanding of God is a great start to anything that has a margin of difficulty. This is especially true for politics. Your religious values of how you see other people, fairness, and justice, all enter into you political views. If your religion doesn’t fit into your politics, you probably have too shallow of a religion. However, it is important that you carefully select what type of religion you bring into your politics. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, wrote these words as the Methodists were dealing with difficult elections that were to have huge impact upon the upcoming Declaration of Independence. Let his words speak: “I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election and advised them: 1. To vote without fee or reward for the person they judged most worthy. 2. To speak no evil of the person they voted against. 3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.” John Wesley October 6, 1774 The more we read this the more we see how healthy religion can create healthy politics. If we all followed the teachings of Wesley we would have some very meaning political discussion. However, we know that this hope far from the reality. The ugliness of politics has never been this keen in my lifetime, which compels us to make sure that we are not part of the problem. Further this ugliness will not slow down after the election. That is why it is crucial that we stay with good religion in our politics. Most likely, half of us will be disappointed in the results of the election. The Bible has much to say about our response to those who disapprove of their leaders. The Apostle Paul writes to the church at Rome, (where political leaders were seriously corrupt): Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Romans 13:1 The Word of God is reminding us that He is in control of all politics. While not all governments are Godly, all governments are accountable to God for their existence. God will retain the final word on what happens. Vote with your healthy religion. Pastor Tom’s message

How about some good religion in our politics?

Let his words speak:

“I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election and advised them:

1. To vote without fee or reward for the person they judged most worthy.

2. To speak no evil of the person they voted against.

3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.”

John Wesley October 6, 1774

The more we read this the more we see how healthy religion can create healthy politics. The Apostle Paul writes to the church at Rome, (where political leaders were seriously corrupt):

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Romans 13:1

The Word of God is reminding us that He is in control of all politics. While not all governments are Godly, all governments are accountable to God for their existence. God will retain the final word on what happens.

Vote with your healthy religion.
