Tuesday 15 September | Week 10, Term 3

A BUSY END OF TERM 3

It has been a very busy end to Term 3 at Albany Hills but it has been my absolute pleasure to act as Principal for the past two weeks while Mr Hansen has been on leave.

During that time we have enjoyed cross country, Prep Enchanted Forest show, the Year 4 Sumo Robotics Challenge, Year 3 excursion to the planetarium as well as school photos and planning days for teachers in all year levels to prepare units of work and assessments for Term 4. Many teachers have also completed their parent-teacher interviews during this time.

We will continue to follow the COVID-19 Operating Guidelines for Queensland State Schools which are regularly updated, for the remainder of this term and into the new term. We will continue to keep parents informed of any significant changes that affect them or our operations at school.

Next term, we are looking forward to a range of events and activities including a modified Year 5 camp, interschool sport Gala Days, swimming for Prep, Years 1, 2 and 3, Bike Safety for Year 4 and we will work towards the selection of student leaders for 2021. As well, teachers will be creating class lists for the new school year, completing assessments and writing report cards, as we head towards our end of year events such as the annual swimming carnival and Year 6 Farewell. Information about each of these events will be sent home in due course next term.

As it promises to be a busy time, I encourage you to stay well informed by reading The Herald or Herald News Flash each week (available online or via email), following our school Facebook page and checking emails regularly for any correspondence sent by the school or your child’s teacher.

I thank our students for another great term of wonderful manners and behaviour, and their diligence towards their school work. Thank you to our parents and caregivers for your continued support. This is very much appreciated.

I wish all of our students and staff a safe, relaxing and well-deserved break, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school in October.

The new school term commences on Tuesday 6 October.

2021 CLASSES

Classes and year levels will soon be structured for 2021. Staffing is determined by the Department of

Education and the number of teachers assigned to our school depends heavily on our 2021 Day

Eight enrolments. This means that early next year, the structure of some year levels and therefore your

child’s class, may change depending on any changes determined by the Department of Education. We

wish to remind parents again, that this school does not accept written or verbal requests for particular

classes, classmates or teachers. Please do not place our staff in a difficult position by attempting to make

such requests.

2021 BOOKLISTS

These have been emailed to parents and carers. Hard copies are available from the office. A reminder

that if you use My School Gear, some of the profits come back to the school, and you are assured of your

child having the exact correct equipment. This is greatly appreciated by the teachers.

KEEP A WATCH ON OUR SCHOOL THESE HOLIDAYS

With the holidays fast approaching, we need you to look out

for after-hours crime in our school.

If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to

intervene. Call the School Watch number – 13 17 88.

The School Watch Program is a partnership between

Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and

the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to

reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools.

Keep the number handy – 13 17 88 – and let’s work together

to help create a safer school community.

EXTENSION MATHS GROUPS

Some of our Year 3 and 5 students have been investigating area and perimeter and applying it to calculate the area and perimeter of irregular shapes. They have been learning how to find unknown values using the available information, how to segment shapes to make calculating the area possible and then applying these skills to real life situations. Great work, everyone!

FREE DRESS DAY THIS FRIDAY 18 SEPTEMBER

For a gold coin donation, students are able to come along to school in free dress this Friday 18 September. The Student Representative Council are raising money to pay for some improvements to our school. Students have requested soccer balls for the prep playground as well as balls for the junior and senior ovals. The SRC would also like to purchase new sand equipment for the junior sandpit as well as marking new handball courts around the school. There is no theme so students may choose their own outfit. Outfits need to be suitable for school and sun safe (no singlets or caps), no hair colour and closed in shoes will need to be worn. We look forward to seeing the students in their colourful outfits this Friday.

SCHOOL REMINDERS

Do you know our three school rules and our NED values? Our three school rules at Albany Hills State School are Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be A Learner and our NED values are N – Never give up, E – Encourage others and D – Do your best.

Looking around lately, I think these small reminders will reinforce our school rules.

Be Safe –

Keep your hands and feet to yourself

Walk on hard surfaces like paths all the time

Listen to teachers at all times, especially in lockdown drills, fire drills and real emergencies

Be Respectful –

Stick to the paths and be aware of the birdlife

Talk to teachers on duty and classroom teachers in the same manner as how you would want to be treated

Be a Learner –

Try your very best all the time, especially at the subjects you are not as good at

Making a mistake is okay - it does not mean you should give up

Please consider these reminders and set some personal goals heading into Term 4.

SCHOOL FIRE AND LOCKDOWN SAFETY

PROCEDURES

Two of the most important procedures within our school are the fire and lockdown procedures. These are practised every term for the safety of your child. A lockdown bell sounds like a slow beeping. In a lockdown, children sit under their desks waiting QUIETLY and STILL until given the all clear from Mr Hansen. If a child is not currently in a building (like at break), they must head to the closest building. A fire procedure bell sounds like a ‘wooping’ that gets higher until it starts again. In a fire evacuation, children must leave for the closest oval. Nothing is to be taken with. They wait quietly for the roll to be marked then wait patiently for the all clear. Please whenever possible go through these procedures with your children at home and make sure they are aware of what to do during a fire evacuation and lockdown.

HUSKY DOGS

Many, many years ago, husky dogs used to be wolves. Now we have them as pets.

Huskies are hard-working animals and they like to be in the snow and the cold. They love to play with you but it cost a lot of money to get one. Huskies are loyal dogs and would love you for the rest of their life. It is important to care for your husky by taking it on lots of walks and never give it cooked bones because it can be very harmful. You must feed your husky raw meat.

CROSS COUNTRY

As you all know, cross country is one of the biggest events at this school and everyone enjoys it! Lately in sports and cross country training, some students may have been doubting themselves and thinking that they’re bad at running. However, everyone is good at different things. So even if you’re not the best at running, still try your hardest and set goals in the race like trying to keep a steady pace, or attempt to overlap one or two people!

So, when you’re getting close to the finish line and your legs are hurting like crazy, just think of how much you’ve already achieved by running cross country!

PLOVERS OF ALBANY HILLS

How would you feel if people were throwing rocks at you when you are trying to protect your babies? We are very lucky at Albany Hills to have such a huge variety of wildlife that live within our school grounds. The Plover or Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) is one of the most precious animals in the school and they are currently nesting on the bottom oval. It is very important that everyone stay away from the plovers because they are very protective of their babies. They should be left alone to raise their young peacefully. In fact, all of the wildlife at our school must be left alone to live peacefully.

LEARNING AN INSTRUMENT AT AHSS

Have you thought about learning an instrument at Albany Hills State School? Well from my experience it is a great opportunity to do many new things. In Year 2 I was lucky to be chosen to be a part of the strings program. I have been learning the cello since the beginning of Year 3 and really enjoy it. There are many things that are great about learning an instrument at our school. You get to go to music lessons and even go on music camps. Music camp is fun because you get to play music with students from other schools and get to make some new friends. The best part is when we get to play on stage in front of our family and friends. When you become a senior strings student, we are lucky to be a part of the ‘Strings Extravaganza’ and get to play with students from Albany Creek State High School. I would recommend learning an instrument and being a part of the music program at our school.
